Ben Stiller (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Zoolander) and Academy Award® nominee Naomi Watts (Best Actress, The Impossible, 2012; St. Vincent) star in Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s (Best Original Screenplay, The Squid and the Whale, 2005) “blisteringly of-the-moment and classically zany” (Variety) comedy, While We’re Young, debuting on Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) on June 30th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh, the film takes a “sharp, funny and dead-on accurate” (LA Times) look at the weird, upended logic of urban sophisticates: the older ones embracing their iPads and Netflix, the young ones craving vinyl records and vintage VHS tapes. Released theatrically by A24, While We’re Young features an outstanding ensemble cast including Adam Driver (HBO’s “Girls”), Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables), Charles Grodin (Midnight Run) and Adam Horovitz (Beastie Boys bandmember Ad-Rock). Now on Blu-ray is Still Alice, the film that finally won Julianne Moore an Oscar for her acting talents. The film also stars Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, and Kate Bosworth. It concerns the battle Moore’s character faces, upon learning about a horrible diagnosis that will most certainly affect her and her loved ones. I’ll go into whether or not the film is worth your, as well as dig into what the Blu-ray experience for this award-winning drama has to offer.

I actually was able to see this film at a film festival quite recently and was very fond of what I saw. Slow West is a quirky western certainly worth the time of those who enjoy Michael Fassbender or a bit of weirdness in a genre like this. The film is all about two unlikely allies traveling through 19th century American wilderness in an effort to find a girl. Lots of craziness ensues. The film has earned plenty of acclaim and arrives on Blu-ray on July 7 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

White Collar is a USA Network television series created by Jeff Eastin. It stars Tim DeKay as an FBI Special Agent and Matt Bomer as a very smart con artist. The twist here is the latter also works as the former’s informant. The show has been on for six seasons now and I regret to inform you, in case you did not know, this is the final season. The six-episode sixth season was only six episodes long and found its run ended this past December. So what do you say? We only have six episodes to skim over here in this review. Are you ready to tackle them with me? Let’s do this! Continue reading ‘White Collar The Complete Sixth Season (DVD Review)’

Unjustly ignored on its release, director Kurando Mitsutake’s tale of a modern day blind swordsman assassin turns Japanese genre conventions upside down. Fans have long requested this wild mix of Tarantino and ZATOICHI in HD, and Synapse Films has pulled out all the stops to create an awesome special edition for release only on Blu-ray. If you’ll remember, Mitsutake is the director of GUN WOMAN, a film that I reviewed last weekend and is coming to Blu-ray the same day. Set in nowhere and in no time, SAMURAI AVENGER: THE BLIND WOLF is a bloody sushi-western and a modern day action film with a classic samurai essence. Independent U.S. distributors Blue Underground have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Luigi Bazzoni’s western Man, Pride and Vengeance (1967), starring Franco Nero, Tina Aumont, Klaus Kinski, Guido Lollobrigida, and Karl Schönböck. The preliminary release date set by the distributors was March 24, 2015, but was then changed to May 26th, 2015. So, now after two months of waiting its finally here. Blue Underground continues to be one of the premiere American Blu-ray distributors committed to transferring many of the Franco Nero spaghetti westerns to high definition. I believe this is one of the many non-Django lot that gets labeled as such for sales/promotional reasons and the fact it has Nero and its an Italian western. But, I’m pretty certain this has nothing to do with those. Continue reading ‘Man Pride Vengeance (Blu-ray Review)’

Before we even get into chatting about all the reasons why Mad Max Fury Road is “50 Shades of F#%king Awesome” I want to spend a moment reflecting upon the film’s theatrical trailers over the past year. All I can say is F YEAH! You want to know how to do a trailer right and pack seats? Study these trailers! They made me feel like I was reliving my childhood all over again. I had not seen post apocalyptic, insane Rated-R action like that since the 80’s. God bless these trailers! Like KFC does to chicken, George Miller does to trailers. He does them RIGHT! It’s like someone took that final action sequence in Neil Marshall’s 2008 Doomsday and made a feature length film about the lunacy of it all. In other words, it’s about fricking time! Come on! Check your brain at the door, buckle up and enjoy this wild ride with me. This is the off-the-wall completely insane world of George Miller’s MAD MAX FURY ROAD! With my recent review of the Blu-ray for Mad Max from Scream Factory and its relatively convenient timing, I’ve had the itch to keep going writing about the series over here on Why So Blu. No, this won’t be a review of the Blu-ray that has been out forever (Fun Fact: It was the fifth Blu-ray to be put in my collection). This will just be a piece minus all the tech specs and recommendation. We started with Mad Max and will go on through Mad Max: Fury Road and at the end rank the films (Where you can tell me how wrong, stupid, unqualified or dumb I am). Those familiar know I do this kind of thing for my Naptown Nerd blog, but I thought since this one started over here at Why So Blu that I would just see the whole thing out here. We’ve now come to the infamous THUNDERDOME portion of the retrospective. Fun fact: When a Why So Blu writer refuses a Blu-ray title, Brian White then says angrily “Who run Blu-raytown? WHO run Blu-raytown?” Continue reading ‘Mad Max Retrospective: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)’

The Cobbler is the latest film from writer/director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor, Win Win). It stars Adam Sandler as a shoemaker who acquires magical powers. Yes, that makes it sound like something fairly dim and fitting of Sandler’s more outlandish crop of films, but this is not a Happy Madison production. As a fan of McCarthy, I was hoping to find something worthwhile, given his previous films, but I was not quite sure what to expect. I missed the film in theaters and had only heard negative things. Now it is available on Blu-ray, where I was able to give The Cobbler a fair shake.

Okay. I am sure that I will probably never hear the end about this, but I really, really enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey. Now don’t get me wrong – I’m smart enough to say it’s not great, but it’s not terrible either. To be completely honest, this is exactly what I expected from the film. Fifty Shades of Grey is based on the EXTREMELY popular and unfortunately poorly-reviewed novel of the same name by E.L.James, but boy did it ever get the housewives talking. And better yet…it’s on Blu-ray now! Continue reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey (Blu-ray Review)’

I almost rented this flick on iTunes over the weekend, but time was not my friend. Low and behold, this press release just dropped. Someone up there must be looking out for me. Haha. After all, I would love my first time with this film I am hearing so much praise about to be on the Blu-ray format. So here it is. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back and better than ever in the post-apocalyptic story, Maggie, arriving on Digital HD June 30thand on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) July 7th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Also starring Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin (Best Supporting Actress, Little Miss Sunshine, 2006) and Joely Richardson (TV’s “Nip/Tuck,” The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Maggie follows the outbreak of a deadly zombie virus that sweeps the nation. American Sniper saw a limited release theatrically last year on Christmas Day. So if you are in the know with my usual rants, then you have already guessed it and hit the nail on the head. It wasn’t released or screened anywhere near me last Christmas, hence why I did not see this masterpiece until January this year and also why it’s sorely missing from my Top 10 Films of 2014 post here. It juts goes to show you that you can’t have your cake and eat all the time too. You either pay the high taxes and live in a shoebox in LA or you stuff your face with fatty BBQ, sip back on sweet tea and watch the world pass you by, but I digress. We really do have a movie to discuss here. So ladies and gentlemen, let me be the first to formally welcome you to my much-anticipated and all-American Blu-ray review of American Sniper.
