Five years back the Spierig brothers made a film called Daybreakers, which received a level of praise from some circles, as far as interesting takes on the vampire genre go. I was not huge on the film overall, but I was happy to praise the world they created for the film, which I thought was actually better suited for a TV series. Now the Spierig’s are back with Predestination, a time travel story, based on a short story by sci-fi writer Robert A. Heinlein. I am a fan of time travel movies and this film did a number on me in terms of both the handling of the always tricky plotting for these types of films and its approach to gender politics, which I was certainly not expecting. Now the film is available on Blu-ray, which is good, because this is an involved, well-filmed, well-acted, and engaging time travel flick that fans should go check out.

Fifty Shades of Grey is one of those movies that will end up being credited more for the hype around it than what is actually seen in the film. This is a film based on the first book in a trilogy of bestselling erotic romance novels that seemingly aspires to be placed in the same territory as something like Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Body Heat, but is far too bland in execution, which seems like the presumed result of Twilight fan-fiction come-to-life. I imagine there could be plenty to say about a potential blockbuster film based on a novel by a woman (E.L. James), adapted by a woman (Kelly Marcel), directed by a woman (Sam Taylor-Johnson), and featuring a female lead (Dakota Johnson) who takes charge on a man who masks his inadequacies with a certain kind of appearance and use of dominance behind closed doors, but it comes more from what the viewer ultimately needs to extrapolate from the film, rather having a film that more effectively conveys proper purpose in a story like this. The only caveat I can provide at this early stage is that I have not read the book, but I doubt the many giggling women at my screening have read it either.

After last week’s dismal screening of Jupiter Ascending I was just about ready to write the remainder of this month off from both attending and reviewing movies. My experience with that film was that bad. I was embarrassed by that $175 million dollar effort, even though I really had nothing to do with it. However, there were two things that sold me on this past Tuesday night’s screening of Kingsman The Secret Service, that infectious Rob Zombie song (one of my favorites from his newest album) employed in the trailer and the positive words of praise from WSB reviewer Aaron Neuwirth, whose full theatrical review of this film can be found here. This throwback horror film just raised the hacked-up bar: Horror legend Kane Hodder and Playboy Playmate of the Year 2012, Jaclyn Swedberg star in this scary, sexy, indie shocker that joins a group of friends just as they emerge from the thick, murky darkness of the marshes tattered, bloody, and lucky to be alive. Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs star in keenly observant comedy Life Partners arriving on Blu-ray and DVD March 3 from Magnolia Home Entertainment. It also has Adam Brody, Abby Elliott and Kate McKinnon. I’m a huge fan of both Jacobs and McKinnon, so this film at least has that going for it in my wheelhouse. Amy Schumer has proven to be a unique comic voice in the past few years, given her rise in popularity, which includes her very funny and risque Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer. Now she has teamed up with director Judd Apatow for Trainwreck, a romantic comedy that very much looks like a film fitting of these two individuals sensabilities. Also: it has wrestling star John Cena being funny, which is a big plus. The cast also features Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Tilda Swinton and comedy superstar LeBron James. I’m excited to see this film, but for now, everyone can check out both a red-band and green-band trailer, along with some images and a poster for the film!

The Spy Who Loved Me is one of my favorite James Bond movies. It is easily the best of the Roger Moore entries, but also a fine example of how strong the more cinematically over-the-top versions of the world famous British spy can be. Kingsman: The Secret Service essentially functions as one of the more outlandish James Bond entries, albeit made up of different characters and stemming from a graphic novel world, with a style and tone fitting of the millennial age. Director Matthew Vaughn, along with his screenwriting partner Jane Goldman, clearly had fun developing and filming the sort of R-rated madness taking place in this self-aware action-comedy, but it also has some of the dry British humor and sensibilities that make it more than just a new take on the ‘spy spoof’ for regular movie goers and a series of in-jokes for the filmmakers and movie geeks invested in the entertaining work of filmmakers like Vaughn. It is more than that, which comes in the form of a smart script that services most of its principle characters properly and is also a lot of fun.

Laggies is a mix of typical rom-com material with typical coming-of-age story material fit inside of the shell of an indie comedy. However, this ‘indie’ effort from director Lynn Shelton has far more mainstream appeal than her previous features, Humpday and Your Sister’s Sister, given the presence of big Hollywood actors Keira Knightley, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Sam Rockwell. It is not the most unique of stories, but it has enough fun with its story and enough charm coming from the performances to make for an entertaining film. Now Laggies is available on Blu-ray for many to check out and see for themselves.
