Miracles happen when “The Good Lie” arrives onto Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital HD on December 23 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Academy Award® winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) stars alongside Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”) and the Lost Boys, a group of real-life Sudanese refugees. Together, against the backdrop of their shared losses, the Lost Boys and these unlikely strangers find humor in the clash of cultures, and heartbreak as well as hope in the challenges of life in America. Along with Witherspoon and Stoll, the film stars real-life Sudanese refugees Arnold Oceng (“My Brother the Devil,” “Adulthood”) and newcomer Kuoth Wiel; Ger Duany (“I Heart Huckabees”) and rapper Emmanuel Jal, who were both former child soldiers and Lost Boys; and Femi Oguns (BBC’s “The Casualty”). Rounding out the cast are Sarah Baker as Faith Based Charities volunteer Pamela Lowi; and, as the younger Lost Boys, Peterdeng Mongok, Okwar Jale, Thon Kueth, Deng Ajuet and Keji Jale, all of whom are children of Sudanese refugees.

It should be no surprise to anyone that the dynamic duo, hilarious tag team of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back reprising their respective roles from 2012 in the appropriately titled 22 Jump Street (I’ll expand upon that more down below). I last talked about 21 Jump Street in my Blu-ray review over here in 2012 and I’m happy to report that I still have not seen a single episode from the original television series, but I’ve studied enough pop culture and seen enough comedies to pick up on references here and there. I’m smart like that, but I’m probably missing out on a few gags here or there. However, make no mistake. I wasn’t looking forward to this one very much going into it theatrically. Like the sequel to the original Hangover film I had my doubts and wondered if this second outing would simply be a cash grab with the same story, etc. set in a different locale. Even if it was, I’d probably laugh, but I’m a movie critic and I want more. I deserve more. Hear me roar! So the question that really matters is did I get what I was looking for? Check out the full 22 Jump Street Blu-ray review below to find out! Continue reading ’22 Jump Street (Blu-ray Review)’

I am not one to write about TV news all that often, but this caught me by surprise. Starz, the network behind Why So Blu favorite, Spartacus, is apparently putting together a TV series based on Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, and Bruce Campbell is set to reprise his role as Ash. As a huge fan of The Evil Dead trilogy, the remake, and Sam Raimi’s involvement in horror in general, this is quite the announcement. Continue on to read all about it.

Inspired by an extraordinary true story, the audience-rousing PRIDE debuts on Blu-ray™, DVD & Digital HD on Dec. 23 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. This critically acclaimed comedy follows a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists who come together to help families affected by the UK miners’ strike in 1984, and has been described as “a feel-good movie that does more than temporarily lift your spirits – it makes you feel a little better about the world, and about our capacity to set aside differences and clasp hands” (Moira MacDonald,SeattleTimes). The original Candyman is what I consider one of the absolute scariest horror films of all time. Took a while for me to feel okay with looking in a mirror at night time after seeing that movie. Tony Todd will always be associated with that role, but for good reason, he’s outstanding. As was with every horror figure around the time, they couldn’t just be one and done. Everybody gets a sequel. Candyman’s second kill spree was no where near as great as his first one (A tops horror film of all time), but its still a pretty decent movie. If you really want to see bad, then continue moving on to the third one, which was lead by Donna D’Errico (When’s the last time you heard that name?). The first Candyman isn’t available yet in the US for Blu-ray, but there is an all-region edition available. Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh, however, is kicking off the year, and getting a nice release from Scream Factory as the begin 2015. Remember Bolt? Disney’s computer animated feature about a dog that believed it had superpowers, given that he was the star of a TV series. I enjoyed that film for what it was, as it had a warm spirit and lots of humor. That in mind, it always felt like Disney taking a film like Toy Story and turning it into something a lot less complex. Big Hero 6 feels like Disney’s attempt to reconstruct Pixar’s The Incredibles into a much more traditional superhero film (with lots of Disney-style emotional content), complete with a young, orphaned hero, the means to put a team of high-tech crime-fighters together, and a masked villain with a dastardly plan in mind. What really makes this film work though is the sense of wonder, fun, and enjoyment to be had in its execution, which is largely embodied by one of Disney’s best new sidekick characters, Baymax. Predictability aside, a large, marshmallow-like robot, and the colorful adventure he is a part of, will easily be plenty of fun for a wide audience.

Hey, it’s that Batman documentary and we at Why So Blu tend to support all things Batman-focused, especially special projects like this! I have been interested in and covering this documentary since its Kickstarter campaign launched way back in March of 2013. Before Comic Con I was able to see the film and was eventually able to speak with the film’s writer/director, which was quite inspiring. For those unaware, Legends of the Knight is a documentary about how Batman has gone on to inspire the power of the myth of superheroes and what real life individuals have gone on to do with that line of thinking in a positive manner. It features a lot of interesting stories and interviews and the film is now coming out for everyone to own this November. Continue on to learn more about this film and its release.

So today’s history lesson focuses on Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment way back in 2009. Honestly, I can’t believe it has been that long, but I digress because I’m making money off their acquisition regardless in my stock portfolio. However, getting back to our history lesson, back then Disney wanted something new and exciting so CEO Bob Iger encouraged his company to explore all of Marvel’s properties, even the unknown ones, to find the next big thing. The idea was to pick an obscure title out of the bunch so Disney would have the freedom they needed to come up with their own version of the idea. And that ladies and gentlemen is how this next big thing we are gathered here to discuss was discovered. Of course I’m talking about Big Hero 6, which we should just get this over already to clear anyone who had this question about this “Marvel” film being produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, it is not part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is set in its own standalone universe and I am A-OK with that. So let’s stop stalling in order to make this opening paragraph more robust and impressive and let’s get to talking some Big Hero 6! Jersey Boys has been an uber popular music for the last many years. It travels city to city and wows and pleases audiences across the United States. The film is a jukebox musical, meaning it features already established pop songs. But, that’s because its telling the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons so you kinda have to be that type of a musical. This film adaptation was once a passion project of Jon Favreau, but it wound up falling dead and never going anywhere. Then, oddly it was resurrected and Clint Eastwood was the guy at the helm. It seemed an odd marriage, and as you’ll see, it was one. Personally, I’d never had the pleasure of seeing the stage production of Jersey Boys and I really don’t think this film was any sort of supplement. Continue reading ‘Jersey Boys (Blu-ray Review)’
