The Giver is the story of a young hero living in a futuristic society where a governing system has seemingly made everything perfect and free of chaos, with ruminating thoughts on possible corruption lurking just beneath the surface. This seems like an interesting idea, were one not to realize how often it seems to come about. These past few years have already given us films like Divergent and The Hunger Games, and while The Giver is also a popular book now adapted into a feature film, it seems to have come at a time where we did not really need it. It is not because the book did not deserve the film treatment, but more due to how relatively slight it feels by comparison. Like it or not, a film like The Hunger Games succeeds for numerous reasons, such as its scope, the actors involved, and cultural relevance at the time. While The Giver has aspects that keep it from being a poor film, it unfortunately feels like it missed its opportunity to be a bigger deal.

We’re finally here! The Expendables 3 comes out tomorrow. This is the end of our ‘Countdown To Expendables 3’ series. And if we started with Sly we’re ending on Schwarzenegger! Today’s pick is the biggest glaring hole, not only of Arnold’s catalog, but the director, the studio and Blu-ray as a whole. We have one that seems to be one of the biggest crimes against Blu-ray humanity for not being a part of the format. And its a huge head scratcher that this title wasn’t put out in the initial years of Blu-ray.

Hammer Horror’s followup to The Woman In Black came a few months ago with The Quiet Ones. Its another spook show, but this time based on real events. That real event was “The Philip Experiment”. In short, in 1972 some Canadian parapsychologists tried to create a ghost as they believed the power to do so may have been in the human mind. While they could never get “Philip” to physically appear before them, they were successful in making contact and some communication with this ghost. The film based off the events was less successful, taking in under $10 million in US box office and $17 million worldwide. Could it be that people are over ghosts/possession movies or was it that Occulus that came out just before this one gave audiences their fill? I don’t know the answer to that, but we can go ahead and take the journey for ourselves in this review. Continue reading ‘The Quiet Ones (Blu-ray Review)’

I had plenty to say about Key & Peele on Blu-ray for their previous Blu-ray released HERE, a lot of which has to do with why the show is so successful. This success is what keeps the show going, which is why I am happy to announce details regarding the Season 3 Blu-ray release. On September 23rd, everyone will be able to enjoy all the antics that season 3 provided, including favorites like “Substitute Teacher” and “Paintboobs”. This release will also contain an assortment of bonus features as well. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

I see a lot of movies and I enjoy rewatching a lot of movies. One would think that I would rewatch movies that I especially like, but that is not necessarily true. The example that applies here is a film called Blue Steak. This was a forgettable Martin Lawrence comedy from 1999, where Lawrence starred as a jewel thief posing as a police officer. It is not especially clever, but I find it entertaining and seem to watch it, for some amount of time, whenever it appears on TV. Let’s Be Cops is similar in both being about some guys posing as police officers and that it is not especially clever either. The film is not even as good as Blue Streak, but hey, I would maybe stop to check in on Let’s Be Cops, were I to find it on TV years from now.

The year 1989 is seminal year in my life in film. It had the summer that saw my love of film grow exponentially with such franchise films at Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and License To Kill. One conversation concerning 1989 seems to have sort of been forgotten over the years. That year had five films involving deep sea science fiction adventures. Most notably remembered is James Cameron’s The Abyss, but there was also DeepStar Six, The Evil Below, Lords Of The Deep and today’s film we’re here to discuss; Leviathan. Leviathan is surprisingly the first one of these films to make the jump to Blu-ray (DeepStar Six will make its debut on the format in Japan on November 5 of this year). While not under the Collector’s Edition banner, Scream Factory has still given this underappreciated film some great extras. Continue reading ‘Leviathan (Blu-ray Review)’

The Muppets was a ceremonious return of our Jim Henson puppeteered crew of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Gonzo and all our Muppet pals. It was also a pretty sweeping success, so of course with there was going to be a sequel. However, Jason Segel made it clear he was one-and-done so he was out. Where to go next? Well, they decided the Muppets are the star so lets just make a movie more focused on them. The budget was kept similar but the results didn’t yield as much of the success as the former. It managed to make just under half the what the first one did worldwide. Luckily, as I said the budget was kept in check. Will this be the last we see of our beloved Muppets for a while or is there enough belief to give it another go? We’ll have to see. But today, let’s talk about this sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. Anchor Bay and Scream Factory have added some stuff to the already large assortment of extras coming in the Halloween box set due out September 23rd. I think some of these were already going to be on the release and they are just clarifying. BUT, they are adding stuff like a bunch of new Horror’s Hallowed Grounds episodes (I tend to love these) visiting locations from Halloween 4, 5 and 6 as well as the pilot episode that was based on the original Halloween. Well done, Mr. Sean Clark! They are also providing a screen shot from the Producer’s Cut of Halloween 6 and my oh my my jaw hit the floor at seeing this cleaned up non-bootleg image! I’ll let them tell you all about it below. Can we just skip August and go to September yet? Continue reading ‘Updated Specs For HALLOWEEN – THE COMPLETE COLLECTION Now Available!’

When I moved to Austin, TX over a year ago from Cleveland, OH I expected my change of scenery to be quite stimulating and invigorating, but you all know that whole grass is always greener on the other side thing, right? While the skies may not be grey all the time like in Cleveland, I would take that downtown skyline any day over the mini buildings that litter downtown Austin. However, I say that not to be mean or derogatory, but only to illustrate a point because the same comparison can be made when analyzing recent DC super hero films to Marvel ones. Although I believe the Nolan Batman trilogy to be some of the best superhero films ever made, I can clearly see where comic book purists can get off complaining that the onscreen events are too dark, brooding and unconventional in terms of how a comic book movie should look, pop and shine on the big screen. I can accept that, so can most people, but also many cannot. So where exactly am I going with all this nonsense? Continue reading ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Blu-ray Review)’

One of last year’s biggest new dramas for network television and sort of a show to help NBC in attempting to make a big comeback, was The Blacklist. Its big selling point was that of actor James Spader, who has managed to turn himself into a television superstar in the last decade plus. Not only was it met with ratings success, but critical acclaim came with it as well. NBC has loved it so much it gave it both a second season and the coveted post-Superbowl time slot after the 2015 competition comes to a close. I had never seen a second of the show aside from advertisements. I’m usually hesitant about network TV dramas, but was intrigued by this one. Continue reading ‘The Blacklist – Season 1 (DVD Review)’

Blue Underground is returning to the Blu-ray business and kicking things off with a double feature. A double feature from a pair of films featuring the collaboration of director Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso, director of…Troll 2? Yes, THAT Claudio Fragasso. Hell Of The Living Dead and Rats: A Night Of Terror were films that Fragasso wrote and then co-directed with Mattei. As a double feature, they are perfect for each other as they both feature groups trying to survive being hunted by a pack of vicious creatures out to eat them. Double features are sometimes enough for these obscure releases, but Blue Underground has gone and attained some new interviews for this disc as well! When I think back to joys of my childhood some of my earliest thoughts of happiness revolve around family and sports, but quite honestly movies and comics. Yep! As a child, I had one wild imagination growing up and with no nearby childhood friends to play with I had to find ways to occupy my time and keep myself busy. I swear I rehearsed that lightsaber duel as Luke Skywalker against Darth Vader in the Empire Strikes Back almost daily. However, I digress because we are not here to talk Star Wars, but that of Ninja Turtles. So remember, just five sentences ago I mentioned the word comics? Yes! Besides Groo, I can still remember those rated-R, crisp, black and white pages of those early Mirage Studios issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That was 1984! A lot has happened in the world of the four turtles since then, but possibly none more revolutionary than the casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil in this newest onscreen reboot by Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes.
