Here is something that I am happy to spread more knowledge of, as I have been following this project for some time. I know I am not wrong in saying that we at Why So Blu are big Batman fans and look forward to future adventures involving him, let alone rewatching and possibly even rediscovering things about the Caped Crusader that continue to entertain us. Legends of the Knight is an upcoming documentary film that is focused on how Batman has been a hero for many people in real life. Filmmaker Brett Culp has set out to make a film that goes over the cultural impact that Batman has had over the year and thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, the film will be released to the public. Portions of the documentary film Legends of the Knight will debut at a SDCC panel on Friday, July 29 at 10:30am in room 26AB. The independent, not-for-profit film explores the inspirational impact of Batman and the power of heroic storytelling. Read on to learn more about this project/event.

Here is a double-dose of Blu-ray news for comedies from the FX network (soon to be seen on FXX). It’s Always Sunny I Philadelphia Season 8 and The League Season 4 both hit shelves on September 10th. For those unaware, ‘Sunny’ follows the insane and hilarious shenanigans of four friends and Danny DeVito (probably the best way to address this group), who own a bar in Philadelphia. The League is one of my favorite comedies on TV right now and anyone worried that it is all about football should put that thought to rest. It is about a group of friends that participate in a fantasy football league, yes, but actual football knowledge is never the focus (I don’t watch football and I love this show), as things are more focused on these guys and gal having fun at each other’s expense. Regardless, you can read on to learn more about these upcoming releases.

In 2002, audiences were able to see what came of a failed film that would have starred Johnny Depp. This film was Lost in La Mancha, a documentary that chronicled the attempt by director Terry Gilliam to make a film about Don Quixote, only to be undone by production and budget problems, forcing the film to ultimately be shutdown. It is an entertaining documentary, but a sad tale for Gilliam, Depp, and all involved. After watching The Lone Ranger, a film that has had its own share of issues in making its way to the big screen, I wondered if seeing a documentary about the attempt to make this film work would have been more entertaining. As it stands, The Lone Ranger is an overlong, excessive, and violent picture that has all the elements to bring the fun sensibilities of director Gore Verbinski’s ‘Pirates’ films to the old west, but only manages to do so, after a long build up.

It would appear that the Despicable Me films are not for me. Despite having a love for animated films, wacky humor, and films that have original songs and themes by Pharrell Williams, I remained unattached to what should be entertaining me quite easily. The concept of pulling a reverse-Incredibles and having us follow a reformed super-villain seems like such a good concept, but I continue to feel fairly indifferent to the series. A lot of it comes down the scripting of these films, which seems to be happier on delivering cute moments than having a film that holds together all the way through. That said, many others were more appreciative of the first film than I, so more of the same may be enough for those excited about this sequel.

When I first learned that Disney was bringing back The Lone Ranger to the big screen I have to admit, I got rather excited. Despite not being a huge fan of Westerns, I have fond childhood memories of the masked fighter of injustice and his white stallion, Silver. Hi-ho Silver! Away! However, I had to check and hit the excitement brakes a few times over the past couple years when I learned about the budget issues and potential delay/cutbacks the production was dealing with and of course when I first saw Johnny Depp’s getup as Tonto. I got a bit squeamish of that image to say the least. This is Tonto? But then came the trailers and as I read more and more about it and the film’s synopsis I thought maybe…just maybe…I can have a little fun with this one. So here we are. It’s 2013 and July 3rd is now upon us! It’s time to saddle up and ride! What say you? Continue reading ‘Johnny Depp’s ‘The Lone Ranger’ Show (Movie Review)’

Remember my Blue Like Jazz review when I talked about how most of the time religious films are usually bottom of the barrel bad? Well, this is surely one of them. The Yankles wants to be the Jewish rendition of Bad News Bears. The film feels very paint by numbers but is unable to paint those numbers very well at all. Yes, this is a very low budget film, but absolutely nothing shines through. The drama, the humor, the religious message, the baseball all falls flat on its face in an embarrassing fashion. This isn’t anywhere near the “so bad it’s good” realm. It’s in the complete boredom “please please please end!” genre of movies. Continue reading ‘The Yankles (Blu-ray Review)’

The Bling Ring is Sofia Coppola’s 5th theatrical feature and it seems like her least essential effort. Coppola’s confidence as a filmmaker is certainly apparent, though this film, much like her previous film, Somewhere, relies a lot on repetition. Much different from Somewhere, however, The Bling Ring is a film that is much more dynamic in pacing and use of edits. Regardless, whether it is the subject matter, the characters, or the basic presentation, something about The Bling Ring made it only satisfying to an extent, as I felt it ended up having about as much depth as some of the personalities of the characters we see in the film.

In the 80s, cinema had a comedically adventurous trio consisting of a romantic couple and its third wheel in Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. They had gone through some Indiana Jones-inspired adventures in Romancing The Stone and its sequel Jewel Of The Nile. The first was a well respected and loved adventure. The sequel’s reception left people a bit cold. Follwing Nile and as a director, DeVito had one darkly comic venture under his belt, Throw Momma From A Train. Instead of attempting a third piece to the Romancing The Stone series, DeVito opted to bring it together in this dark comedy about divorce featuring a legendary violent battle between the sexes to close the film out. The film was brought to big success and many consider it the trios best outing of all. Continue reading ‘The War Of The Roses (Blu-ray Review)’
