Exploding with heart-stopping chases and lethal martial arts confrontations, it’s an adventure that pits an honest cop against two vicious crime lords and his own department. Boss: Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)

Boss is a political drama series starring Kelsey Grammer as the mayor of Chicago.  The show was broadcast on Starz and initially arrived with so much confidence that the network greenlit a second season a few weeks before the first season even premiered.  I would not necessarily say that Starz got a little ahead of themselves, but Boss is merely a series that has a lot of good to sometimes great things in it, but does not quite reach event television for me.  The show wants to be stylish and interesting, but only pulls off one of those things effectively the majority of the time, while not quite providing me with characters that extend beyond caricature.  Still, I did find the series watchable enough, with a Blu-ray set that delivers a strong audio/video presentation, yet only a smattering of extras.  Read on to learn more about the first season of Boss and how the Blu-ray faired. This September See Several Fox Filmmaker Signature Series Films On Blu-Ray

On September 18th, Fox will be releasing several films under their Filmmaker Signature Series banner.  This films being released on this day include The Brothers McMullen, She’s The One, The French Connection, Wall Street, Hoffa, and The War of the Roses.  What makes the Filmmaker Signature Series notable is that all of these Blu-rays are given personal attention by the original filmmakers, meaning that the transfers onto Blu-ray were personally supervised and approved by them, implying that these are the preferred and best current way to view these films in a home media format.  I believe Best Buy previously had an exclusive deal to sell these titles, but in September they will be available all over.  Continue on to learn more details regarding the release of these upcoming films. JAWS (Blu-ray Review)

Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, Jaws set the standard for edge-of-your seat suspense quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry.  When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again.  Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, Jaws remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.  Jaws is one of 13 classic Universal films to be digitally remastered and fully restored from 35mm original film elements as part of Universal’s ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration.  The Jaws restoration began with researching and evaluating the existing film elements to determine the best means to restore the film.  Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film elements shot by shot and frame by frame.  Following the picture restoration, Universal  Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic Jaws soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu-ray for the latest home theater technology.  The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s post-production team to ensure that the integrity of Spielberg’s original vision remained intact. The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

If there was one thing I was hoping for here in the summer of 2012, it was that I get to review the hotly anticipated second season of AMC’s smash zombie hit, The Walking Dead.  The show snuck up on me last year like an embarrassing pimple on your nose does during the middle of the workday.  Boom!  All the sudden it was part of my normal Sunday night routine.  I’m so glad I did not give up on it during the first season when I wasn’t feeling it half way through.  Thank you for the positive encouragement Susan to keep on going or I would have never known what I would have missed out on in this blissful gospel I’m about to preach.  Ladies, gentlemen and the undead…I give you The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season…the Blu-ray review! Jeff, Who Lives At Home (Blu-ray Review)

I just realized it that it may be pseudo-comedy week here on Why So Blu – we’ve been dropping them like they were hot all week long and we’re not done yet. Up next we’ve got The Duplass Bros. sleeper comedy Jeff, Who Lives At Home starring the cry-baby from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jason Segel along with Mr. Hangover I & II,  Ed Helms. Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon round out the cast in this esoteric comedy of sorts. If the Duplass name sounds familiar that’s due to another film called Safety Not Guranteed, which was also reviewed here on Why So Blu. I will say one thing – The Duplass Bros. are busy guys, whether they’re behind-the-scenes or in front of the camera. They’re coming up, it seems. ‘The Expendables 2’: The Legend Of Van Damme’s Gold

The Expendables are back and older than ever, plus Liam Hemsworth!  This action-packed sequel is silly and stupidly entertaining, but at least it delivers on what seemed to be promised in the first film.  I was let down by the first film, due to its intent on striving for a fairly serious tone and boring me with its bland story in between its few action set pieces.  This time around, Stallone and his crew have a much more go-for-broke attitude about things and they have plenty of fun while delving into one explosive action sequence after another.  That said, the movie is all sorts of ugly (CG, locations, the quality in general), even as it pulses with all the energy ridiculous kills and cheesy one-liners have to offer.  Make no mistake; this movie is exactly what it looks like, so take that as you will. ‘ParaNorman’ Raises the Dead And Puts Them To Sleep (Movie Review)

ParaNorman was first introduced to me by a former co-worker whose family’s business (Peak Solutions LLC) just so happened to be directly involved in the production of this 3D stop-motion animated adventure film. How you say? Well they supplied/sold the many 3D rendering color printers the studio/production team used to create thousands of models that painstakingly captured every movement and conveyed every emotion in the character’s faces. Plus on top of that, the nightmarish subject matter and trailer for this one looked hella cool too. But we’ve all been there before. Cool trailers and crafty concepts don’t always necessarily mean its going to be good. So while we are gathered here today, let’s take a closer look at this one under my proverbial microscope. ‘ParaNorman’ Sees Dead People And The Film Delivers A Lively, Good Time

First and foremost, I should say that I really dug ParaNorman.  The film has quietly stood as one of my most anticipated films of the year, as it fell into the realm of having so many different things that called out to wanting me to like it, and it completely delivered.  A stop-motion animated zombie film that can appeal to all audiences, from the studio behind Coraline, is a film that easily has my interest and the fact that ParaNorman was able to match the kind of high expectations that I don’t like to have for films is quite rewarding.  The film is great to look at, unique in its presentation, fun and exciting, as well as very funny, and not afraid to present some deeper themes and meaning behind a tale that could have simply been a kid’s zombie movie.  Simply put, ParaNorman has all of its parts assembled incredibly well. Columbia’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA “Call Me Mavy” Video

After seeing Paranorman tonight, here’s another animated flick I’m really looking forward to seeing.  Columbia/Sony Picture’s Hotel Transylvania stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, CeeLo Green, David Spade, Molly Shannon and Fran Drescher.  Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them.   On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday.  For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.  Check out the video below!
