Watching ‘Total Recall’ Makes Me Want To Forget (Movie Review)

Be as it may, I tried to sit down this past weekend and for the first time ever watch the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Total Recall.   Needless to say, I did not make it all the way through.  I know.  Boo!  I became extremely bored and restless half way through. Like my experience with Serenity, I yet again seem to be in the minority when it comes to appreciating Sci-fi classics – although oddly enough, I do utterly adore and appreciate The Fifth Element.  I don’t think I’ll fully understand why that is, but I try not to question logic too much when it comes to my love of certain quirky movies.  My take away from last weekend’s viewing was that I finally got to experience the three-breasted-woman and appreciated how good looking and yummy Sharon Stone really was back in her Basic Instinct days.  However, I won’t let this past weekend discourage me from everything I have seen so far since it was showcased at last year’s Comic-Con in regards to this rebooted title.  Hear me world?!  I’m coming in with an open mind. ‘Total Recall’ Has An Identity Crisis

Get your ass to…London?  It seemed like it would be easy to constantly compare this remake to Paul Verhoven’s excessive, but entertaining Arnold Schwarzeneggar sci-fi/action flick, Total Recall, but the film has lifted so many different elements from an assortment of other action and sci-fi films that comparing it to just one movie would not do enough justice.  The worst thing about this new Total Recall, similarly based on Philip K. Dick’s science fiction short story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” is that it drops the most interesting aspect about its story – the idea of whether or not we are supposed to believe what is happening.  The lack of ambiguity, along with the lack of much in the way originality or personality in the filmmaking, make this a very expensive film that has little to offer, beyond some fancy special effects, which will only be blandly recalled after. David Lean Directs Noel Coward (1942-1945) (Blu-ray Review)

All the great directors have to start somewhere, right? Well, David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago) and famous English playwright Noel Coward would team up for four films in three years. How’s that for plowing through? David Lean was an editor and he and Coward teamed up to create some film magic so to speak. The Criterion Collection has brought us a beautiful boxed set of these early Lean/Coward films for our enjoyment. They come fully restored and fully loaded in terms of extras. How will they stack up to scrutiny? This review will be a doosy, and for all intents and purposes, the overall grading system will be for the films themselves as whole as opposed to rating each individual film separately. The same for the technical specifications. It’s easier that way since I’m reviewing a complete set and not just one film. I hope this makes sense. Let’s get to it!   Continue reading ‘David Lean Directs Noel Coward (1942-1945) (Blu-ray Review)’

Bob Chats with Haunted Highway’s Dana Workman: SyFy Channel’s Hottest New Investigator

You know, I’ve always fancied myself as not having a fear for many things.  Okay, there’s the dislike of bats (fear is such a nasty word), I’ll give you that one. But watching the new SyFy Channel show Haunted Highway has introduced me to a level of fear I’ve never considered before. Maybe I’m just getting old but watching these two person teams search for paranormal anomalies while on their own in the wilderness freaks me out.  And to make it worse, Dana Workman, the subject of my interview today and one of the investigators on the show, is a beautiful, petite young woman. So what does that say about me? I bet I can at least take her in arm wrestling though. Enough about me. Let’s learn about my new hero… Continue reading ‘Bob Chats with Haunted Highway’s Dana Workman: SyFy Channel’s Hottest New Investigator’

Thin Ice (Blu-ray Review)

The Coen Bros. film Fargo is a favorite of mine.  I think it is a wonderful, dark comedy that works thanks to its fantastic script and great performances from all involved.  It is quirky, despite going to dark places; sweet in regards to its hero, Marge Gunderson, despite detailing the exploits of some other really nasty characters; and it’s a great looking film, despite being set in a snow-filled winter in Minnesota.  Thin Ice feels very much like a film that wishes it could be more like Fargo, but it never really works out that way.  It features quirky characters, down on their luck, that turn to crime in order to get ahead, but only find themselves in deeper and deeper trouble.  It boils down to being a con-man film that really does not go anywhere exciting, regardless of whichever version one watches on this good looking Blu-ray disc. ‘Step Up Revolution’ Is A Dance-tastic Step Down

People may have to stick with me on this, but I, myself, have stuck with this Step Up franchise for no discernible reason, beyond the fact that the choreography has always been impressive.  Despite the lack of Channing Tatum (who began as a bland, pretty face in the first Step Up and is now a hot commodity all over), the series has actually gotten ‘better’ with each entry…until now.  Yes, Step Up Revolution has a similarly generic story and weak characters that serve as the same elements that we are not supposed to care about, but the other films seemed better.  I was still more engaged with the previous entries and found the dances to be really involving.  This film has some elaborate dance sequences and the 3D looks pretty good, but everything around those aspects feels even lazier this time around than normal.  I don’t ask for a lot from these movies, but I do wish I was more entertained with this one. Friends With Kids (Blu-ray Review)

Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Jon Hamm star alongside Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott in a daring and hilarious ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends whose lives change once they have kids.  The last two singles in the group (Westfeldt and Scott) observe the effect that kids have had on their friends’ relationships and wonder if there’s a better way to make it work.  When they decide to have a child together and date other people, their unconventional “experiment” leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, above all, true love. Written and directed by Jennifer Westfeldt and also starring Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns, Friends with Kids delivers the laughs and the heart from beginning to end! ‘Step Up Revolution’ Jams to Similar Beat

Director Scott Speer is the man in charge in this fourth go-around in the Step Up franchise. He picks up where Jon Chu’s third installment left off in 2010…sort of. What was arguably the best film in the series, Step Up 3, or Step Up 3D as it was originally called, is a tough one to top. Sure the acting is rather unnoticeable and the story was cliche, but here comes Speer’s version!
