‘Safety Not Guaranteed’, But It’s Enjoyable

Earlier in the year I saw Sound of My Voice, which pushed the limits in terms of being a low budget film that had time travel as a plot device (ok, so Primer is one that may have it beat).  Safety Not Guaranteed is a comedy/drama that does not aspire to be an ambitious film about time travel, but it does provide a reason to consider your options if you were given the chance to go back to a certain time.  It also has a likable cast and a sort of relaxed charm that keeps you invested with the film, even if it tends to stray from its main goal from time to time.  The film has its share of laughs, as well as plenty of touching aspects between the oddball cast members for it to work as a quirky, but audience-friendly feature. A glamorous American movie star wants to keep the press away from her wedding, but the elaborate charade she devises could wind up ruining everything in the sweet and irresistible romantic comedy The Decoy Bride.  When the wedding plans of internationally famous Hollywood film star Lara (Alice Eve, Men in Black III, The Raven, Sex and the City 2) and English author James (David Tennant, Doctor Who, Fright Night) are sabotaged by a paparazzo, the couple decides to relocate the event to the remote Scottish island of Hegg.  However, dilapidated buildings and greedy islanders are the least of the problems that the wedding party and their Hollywood entourage have to deal with, as Marco (Federico Castelluccio, The Sopranos), the ingenious paparazzo, tracks them down in his mission to photograph the celebrity wedding of the year. Lara and James decide to take even more drastic measures to ensure their privacy and they approach local girl Katie (Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the upcoming Anna Karenina) to have her act as a decoy bride to lure the press off the trail.

The FP (Blu-ray Review)

The FP is a movie that will not win over a lot of people.  That’s something I am fairly certain of.  With that said, if the core concept of watching a goofy film that is set in the ‘future’ and revolves around rival gangs playing a DDR-type game in matches that can lead to your death, were you to lose, makes you chuckle and you have an appreciation for low-budget, indie filmmaking, then The FP may be up your alley.  The film is very deliberate in its intent, should not be taken seriously, and does feature some creative work from those involved in the production.  It is downright silly at times, but I actually had fun watching it and appreciated its intent.  The bonus is that this is a pretty decent Blu-ray as well. The Old Adventures Of New ‘Spider-Man’

The Amazing Spider-Man sits in a very difficult place.  Despite the fact that Spider-Man is one of the most universally loved superheroes, the idea of a new movie that recaps his origins seems to be perplexing to many people.  It has only been 10 years since the first Spider-Man, and within that time frame, two widely praised films came from that franchise, along with a host of other superhero films.  It is one thing to restart a fairly recently created franchise and it is a whole new challenge to have yourself standout amongst a slew of other, similar features.  I can’t say that The Amazing Spider-Man succeeded at being the best Spider-Man film or among the best superhero films ever produced, but I can say that everyone’s friendly, neighborhood web-head is back in a very entertaining feature film.
