The Sunset Limited (Blu-ray Review)

Two celebrated actors, Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, No Country for Old Men) and Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), star in The Sunset Limited, a searing film that explores the ongoing debate between belief and atheism, afterlife and nihilism, salvation and suicide. The Sunset Limited mixes humor and pathos to examine the relationship between strangers brought together by desperate circumstances.  Set in a New York tenement apartment, the story focuses on two very different men – a deeply religious black ex-con (Jackson) who thwarts the suicide attempt of an asocial white college professor (Jones) who tried to throw himself in front of an oncoming subway train, The Sunset Limited.  The men lock themselves in a passionate philosophical exchange of opposing views, each seeking the language and inspiration that will convert the other.  The conflict reaches a shattering conclusion that leaves viewers thinking well after the final frame. Over the holiday season, audiences everywhere had a chance to see the latest film from writer/director Cameron Crowe, We Bought A Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.  It was an incredibly sweet story, almost too sweet (review HERE), but one that was certainly a fitting film for families to go out and see together.  And now families will get their chance to see it again or for the first time.  Coming April 3rd, We Bought A Zoo hits Blu-ray and DVD and is loaded with over 2 hours of bonus materials.  I can at least say that Cameron Crowe always supplies some amount of earnestness in his features, and We Bought A Zoo definitely delivers that much.  Read on to learn even more about this upcoming release. This stars the man of a thousand faces: Lon Chaney Sr.  With that out of the way let’s see how The Phantom of the Opera stacks up on Blu-ray.  Vamos!  Continue reading ‘The Phantom of the Opera (Blu-ray Review)’

Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis (Blu-ray Review)

It’s been nearly thirty years since Giorgio Moroder’s somewhat controversial version of Metropolis was released in theaters. It’s also been quite a few years since the long out of print VHS and Laserdisc copies went out of print and until then most of the curious fans out there had to settle for awful bootleg copies and cost prohibitive laserdisc copies. That’s all over now, because the good folks over at Kino Lorber have gone to the vault and dusted off the film for a high definition release. Now you can experience for yourself what all the hoopla was about all those many years ago. Geez, it was 1984, yo! Anyways, let’s get our groove with Giorgio Moroder’s MetropolisContinue reading ‘Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis (Blu-ray Review)’

Spy vs. Spy: ‘This Means War’ (Movie Review)

Growing up, I remember being enamored by Mad magazine, particularly one regular strip in particular, Spy vs. Spy.  Do you remember those?  Those black and white characters had me in stitches every time I read their strip and I was overjoyed when they were eventually commercialized into everything from an animated television series to trading cards and video games.  The reason I mention these crudely animated little fellows is because they are exactly what I thought about the first time I saw the theatrical trailer for This Means War.  And it also meant the return of McG.  In the eyes of the critics out there beside myself, I wonder what fairs worse?  I’m not going to lie.  This Means War looked like a fun little movie, but it didn’t win me over instantly.  What did was the controversy behind it.  I’m referring to how it went from losing the appeal of it being labeled a Rated-R comedy by the MPAA and how it was excised down to a PG-13 cut. Get It While It’s Hot! Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter – Official Trailer

I know it sounds strange, but as much as I write, I hardly ever read.  Reading to me is a luxury that is afforded by time, that which I have not much of.  Boo!  But it was almost two years ago when I came across a book title while glancing through an issue of Entertainment Weekly that right then and there I knew I had to have.  That title was none other than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  All I have to say is wow!  I loved it so much I did what I never did before…I wrote a review about it (make sure you check it out here).  Okay.  Maybe that’s not too special, but it was my first book review ever.  That’s something to be proud of, right?  Well I think so! Malcolm X (Blu-ray Review)

We’re going to take it way back to the early 90’s for our next review in which actor Denzel Washington and Director Spike Lee team up to bring the story of Malcolm X to the big screen. Spike Lee’s grand opus about the controversial figurehead of the nation of Islam in the 60’s has finally made its way to the Blu-ray format in a deluxe edition brimming with extras and even a collector’s book. The film clocks in at over three hours, so will the origins of Malcolm X be a fascinating tale of intrigue, deception, and murder or will it be a bloated mess of a film that is too self indulgent for its own good? We shall see.  Continue reading ‘Malcolm X (Blu-ray Review)’

The Phantom Menace 3D (Movie Review) & Other Star Wars Rants

It was only a matter of time before FX guru and Star Wars creator George Lucas jumped on the 3D bandwagon. This past Friday, Episode I: The Phantom Menace made its arrival in theaters. With massive cardboard standups in cinemas months ago promoting the upcoming release/re-release, hopes were high that Lucas would deliver on the conflicted visual technology. At the end of the day, however, the only thing that was high was the ticket price.

The Dead (Blu-ray Review)

I’d caught word about a little zombie tale called The Dead due to it being released on Blu-ray in the UK a few months ago. I almost imported it myself, but decided to wait a bit. Once the announcement by Anchor Bay was made on them acquiring it for distribution here in the states, I jumped at the chance to review it.  That was actually a good thing due to it saving me twice what it normally would cost me to import, and it being a blind buy. I had seen the trailer for The Dead and thought it looked decent enough. Zombies in Africa with a hint of Resident Evil 5 – what’s not to like?  Well, that’s what we’re going to find out.  Continue reading ‘The Dead (Blu-ray Review)’

A ‘Safe House’ Built Of Rookies, Rogue Agents, And Bloodshed

Safe House has a lot of elements that should make it a pretty good watch.  A first rate cast, a solid story setup, and an “R” rating earned through the use of non-gratuitous violence, are all aspects that had me excited from the trailer alone.  For the most part, this film delivered just that, but something still seemed to be missing.  Despite the presence of an intense and pretty badass Denzel Washington, Safe House felt a bit lacking at times, in terms of giving me something more to chew on.  At other times, it felt a lot like other movies I had previously seen.  These aspects in mind, I still think it worked well overall in delivering a pretty violent and gritty, but good looking action picture, which is sometimes all really one can ask for. ‘Journey 2’ Features Mysterious Island Lizards, Rocks, and Caines

It is nice to set up goals for yourself.  For example, I happened to have three goals for the New Year:  see Michael Cain ride on a giant bumblebee, watch The Rock bounce berries off his chest, and find out if a giant electric eel can power a submarine (all of that is true, yes).  With Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, I managed to achieve all of those goals at once and there was still plenty of time to see baby elephants, volcanoes full of gold, and the lost city of Atlantis (all in eye-popping 3D, no less).  Look, this is not a movie that is meant to be taken very seriously and for 90 minutes (following a pretty great, new Looney Tunes short) I did manage to get a decent amount of entertainment out of this film.  Dwayne Johnson just has too much damn charm and is considerably less sweaty than he was in Fast Five.
