SDCC 2015: Open Road Panel HALL H

SDCC 2105Hall H began with a bang with Bill Murray sauntering down the middle aisle to the tune of “Smoke on the Water.” Of course he received a standing ovation, not only because he’s Bill Murray, but also because it was his first Comic-Con appearance. Joined by “Rock the Kasbah” screenwriter Mitch Glazer, they were comfortable, funny, and very charming. Murray joked that his collaboration with Glazer includes Glazer writing and Murray re-writing.

When moderator Josh Horowitz asked about Murray’s legendary status and how that can be intimidating, he jokingly responded that he carries a knife in his sock.

When stating that Murray sings every day, he prompted the audience to sing their favorite song for 30 seconds, which made for a rather lackluster audience participation. What do you expect from 6500 people who have been up for most of the night?

Murray expressed his enthusiasm for Miley Cyrus, stating that she’s “fucking great,” and he didn’t want anyone talking trash about her.

At a restaurant, looking like an industrial stucco building, but inside it was a magnificent building that has been there for centuries. As you go to the roof, there’s a two man band (4 stringed instrument and a drum) and you over look the market and there’s a rhythm that’s a thousand years old, and to be there and listen to something that was impacted people for centuries makes you realize you have a responsibility to pass on what you’ve learned in life.

Favorite role to play: “once upon a time, i did save the city of new york, and i had the coolest damn car to drive around manhattan”

My knees are shaking – well, try to get them to your hips, then higher. fan started dancing. is bruce willis a jackass on set? —well, he’s a movie star, and you hear stories about people, but when you’re a real movie star – and he is one – you have to take matters into your own hand. out of respoct for them movie and crew. there are people who try to dominate the set, and someone like willis feels the need to take over and get loud and in someones face. sometimes they become loud and cantankerous for the integrity of the product. murray and willis had trailers right next to each other, and they got along splendidly.

Glazer’s wife is Kelly Lynch, which made for an amusing anecdote about the Bill Murray lore. For about 15 years, no matter what time of day, Murray would call Glazer whenever “Road House” was playing and say “Patrick Swayze is banging your wife.” It even got to the point where Murray would have friends and family call Glazer too.
