Back in September of 2011 we did an experiment here on the site. At that time we let veteran staff writer Sean Ferguson loose with covering Scarface’s debut on the Blu-ray format. You’re probably wondering why is that even relevant here. Well it’s because it was Sean’s first ever viewing of the infamous Al Pacino film and the world was wondering his thoughts. The last part is of course an exaggerated stretch, but one did definitely not expect the outcome of such a feat. Long story short, Sean wasn’t impressed. The film, which I have long considered a cult classic was only given a score of 2.5 by Sean. As one would expect that raised a lot of eyebrows, scrutiny and comments of blasphemy from fellow Why So Blu readers and whatnot. That legendary Blu-ray review of Scarface is still alive and kicking here on the site and can be viewed HERE complete the 21 comments of debate that ensued. Ah…memories. I promise you that you’ll see a different point of view from my review below and I even enlisted Adam Byrne (sans cowboy boots) to chime in as well to compliment any sentiments or highlights I may have missed. Enjoy! Continue reading ‘Scarface “The World is Yours” Limited Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Sam Liu and Justin Copeland bring Wonder Woman to the animated side of the DC Universe in her very own Bloodlines. The film is deftly animated, paced quickly and the voice acting is stellar. But is that enough to make it a DC Cartoon classic? Read on below about Wonder Woman: Bloodlines which is available on 10/22!

So I went to see Jojo Rabbit (2019) on the very first day of this month. I was very aware of this film coming out. I know on a few of my reviews I mention that “I had no idea this film was even coming out”; this is not the case with Jojo Rabbit (2019). The stills from the film, featuring, director, Taika Waititi, as one of the most infamous war criminals in history, Adolf Hitler, is enough to rub people the wrong way. Seeing only one of Waititi’s films in completion, Thor Ragnarok (2017), I had a feeling that Jojo Rabbit (2019) would be some sort of satirical film about the overbearing presence of Nazism in WW II Germany. Where this would make for a disastrous and poorly received film… I actually found it to be truly moving, clever, and heartfelt. Let’s hop to and talk about it.

It feels so good to be back! It was 10 years ago when the first film, Zombieland (2009), came out. I went to go see it with a friend or two not sure what to expect. I walked out of that film with such a love for what I was seeing on screen! The cast was great, the sets were awesome, and the humor was in full swing. Now we flash forward to 10 years later, not only in time of the film, but also in real life. I know what you guys are thinking… Does it hold up after all this time. Is this film still relevant? Does Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), truly, nut up or shut up? It nuts up guys… it nuts up.

Angelina Jolie has returned to the big screen. Though she’ll always be “Acid Burn” to this reviewer, as the powerful, horned anti-hero, Maleficent, fans of the original 2014 flick are far more vocal than a ragtag group of rollerbladers intent on hacking the planet. The first film, which felt more like a ninety-minute television pilot, raked in over 750 million worldwide, so a sequel was inevitable. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is definitely more of a film than it’s predecessor, but it’s still a mess.

A decade is a long time for fans to wait to see the next installment of their favorite franchise. That tenth of a century waiting period can pay off big time like with Disney’s release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens… or not (we’re still waiting for Avatar 2). Enter Zombieland: Dobule Tap, a sequel to a surprise hit from 2009. In that time, the undead craze unearthed some bona fide hits like AMC’s The Walking Dead. Was ten years too long to wait for another romp with Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock? Yes… and no.

In January, the Criterion Collection will kick off the New Year with one of Pedro Almodóvar’s most beloved films: All About My Mother, the Spanish auteur’s Oscar-winning ode to maternal love and female fortitude. George Cukor’s effervescent romantic comedy Holiday, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant in one of their most memorable pairings, will appear on Blu-ray for the first time in a new 4K restoration. Jean-Luc Godard’s long-unavailable sophomore feature Le petit soldat, the director’s first collaboration with his iconic muse Anna Karina, represents a major rediscovery from a legendary career. And that’s not all: we’ll celebrate Sidney Lumet with a new 4K restoration of his arresting nuclear-war thriller Fail Safe and a Blu-ray edition of his Tennessee Williams adaptation The Fugitive Kind, starring Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani.

Scream Factory has landed themselves one of the most fabled, popular and well revered horror movies of the 1980s in Richard Donner’s The Omen. Not only the original film, but the sequels, television sequel (Never before released on Blu-ray) and that remake starring Liev Schreiber from the director of A Good Day To Die Hard (Just when I had forgotten its existence). There has been a pretty nicely budget set of the theatrically release films on Blu-ray for a while now, but Scream Factory has given it an extensive upgrade in all facets, including packaging, new interviews, lossless mono tracks and a 4K scan of the original film. Series fans and horror collectors should be please with what they are offering, which can be had on October 15th.

The Haunting of Hill House was another one of those Netflix shows where I heard from word of mouth that you should be binging this. And binge that we did! However, unlike say a Stranger Things for example, The Haunting of Hill House is a slow burn. So instead of taking all the episodes in within one 24-hour period like we did with Stranger Things it took about a week to get through this one. That’s not to say it’s not as good as Stranger Things, but instead Hill House takes a lot more dedication and attention because of its intertwining timelines. Therefore, it took a little bit longer to get through. Much like the positive buzz I heard prior to watching all I can do is smirk when I think how well done the horror drama The Haunting of Hill House was. Very rarely do we also get Netflix releases on the Blu-ray format so it’s with great honor that I tackle this October 15th Paramount title for y’all. Here goes nothing. DC has been releasing one-shot issues of various villains throughout 2019, each a single tale dedicated to one baddie. All going under the heading Year of the Villain, we have thus far been graced with issues covering the Riddler, Black Adam, Sinestro, Black Mask and Lex Luthor. The latest addition to this doom-dealing lineup is none other than the most popular DC villain, the Joker. Hot on the heels of the successful motion picture of everyone’s favorite clown (sorry, Pennywise), we go back to the ink and paper roots for Batman’s arch nemesis.

Crawl has all the makings of a B-grade disaster thriller – ominous weather, a main character who doesn’t listen to authority, impending death. It’s all there in a neat little package. This is a package perfectly wrapped for the audience that doesn’t need deep insight, backstory or terribly emotional acting. This may all sound like a dig and sharp criticism but in truth, these are complimentary truths, highlighted because those were some of the very good things about the film. Check out the in-depth review below for more on this monster/disaster mashup!

In today’s horror laden movie climate zombies have become a dime a dozen. Long gone are the days of Romero’s stark new vision of flesh eating ghouls as the walking dead have literally gone mainstream. Thus it takes some utterly original tinkering to make any such film a standout, but fortunately the latest cinematic outing involving the undead from helmer Rodman Flender titled Eat Brains Love has just enough humor, quirk and highly memorable characters to make it rise above the buried alive fray and live again.
