Before we begin here let me ask you guys this. Have you ever heard the phrase hiding in the spotlight? Well I got to be honest with you. This Warner Bros./Amazon Exclusive Harley Quinn Suicide Squad Blu-ray set brings that phrase to life. I mean at least for me it does and here’s why. Don’t let that $116 price tag fool you. That’s an absolute bargain for what you’re getting here. I think it goes without saying that you’re getting the Blu-ray Combo Pack which includes the Theatrical and Extended Cut of Suicide Squad on Blu-ray disc, a DVD and a Digital HD redemption code. However, all that is secondary to the real treasure inside this big box. You’re also getting the long sold out and highly sought after DC Collectibles Harley Quinn Suicide Squad statue. It’s such a rare find anymore that it’s not even on the DC Collectibles website any longer. You can see the exact statue plus a video turnaround of it by visiting here. But that’s not it! I want to further blow your mind. The limited edition statue’s retail price was $154.99 and is going well over $200 on eBay and Amazon third parties currently. With the 80’s and fine films ala John Carpenter going hand-in-hand, there’s more than enough past picture work to hail. So let’s get to it – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! This week we’re getting a little more romantic and melancholy as we step to the side of the terror tales via the master of horror and visit a story with some surprisingly sweet sentiments in spades. Ahh…the Smurfs. That song; La la la-la la la, Sing a happy song. La la la-la la la, Smurf it all day long. La la la-la la la. Smurf along with me! La la la-la la la. Simple as can be. Next time you’re feeling blue just let a smile begin, Happy things will come to you..So smurf yourself a grin! La la la-la la la, Now you know the tune, You’ll be Smurfing soon! When I was a kid, I was singing along, but after this movie, maybe I’m more in tuned to what cartoon Gargamel said during that opening sequence in the animated (Well, 2D television cartoon animated) “Oooooo I hate Smurfs! I’ll get you, I’ll get all of you if it’s the last thing I ever do! hehehehe!” Oh yeah, we’re here reviewing the debut of the 2011 film on 4K UHD Blu-ray. The sequel to the film is already available on the format (One of the launch titles), but this one is jumping in on March 28th. Continue reading ‘The Smurfs (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

In celebration of the 4K Ultra HD release Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, the latest adventure and series starter in the wizarding world lived in by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Warner Bros is format jumping the original films in the series. They’ll all get that higher resolution with High Dynamic Range applied to them, to look sharper, prettier and newer. In my opinion, Warner Bros has been one of the more impressive studios when it comes to upgrading their catalog titles to 4K. One would think they are going to a lot of attention to one of their biggest franchises ever. They are releasing them in waves, with the four David Yates films (The back half of the series) being the first to come out. No date is set yet for the first four, but they’ll be here soon enough. This review will focus on the first part of the finale of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 from 2010. It, and the others will be available March 28th. The wizarding world of Harry Potter led one of the most impressive runs in cinematic franchise history. Not only did all seven books in the series get adapted, but there were eight films. Aside from one major change due to a death, the films managed to keep its cast intact for the entire telling of J.K. Rowling’s story. Harry Potter started before brand IP became a major thing and it left us as it was becoming one. Being that its one of the most successful and popular cinematic IPs ever, it could only lay dormant for so long. What direction to go with it now that a major eight film story has taken place and the characters completed their important arcs? Well, the answer is backward. J.K. Rowling has returned to give us a new story based loosely off the adventures of a fictional author of a book in the wizarding world. And back in November, we began what is to be a five film journey on its own about events well before even Harry Potter’s parents were around. The magic was not gone, as Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them made almost a billion dollars worldwide. It now makes its way to 4K Ultra-HD and Blu-ray March 28th. Despite loving all things sci-fi and horror Life is a movie I’ve been against ever since I saw the very first trailer on television last year. I felt like it was such a ripoff of Alien that it did not even warrant my attention. The one thing I could not deny was what an absolutely fantastic cast. I have to admit that having Rebecca Ferguson (not related to Sean Ferguson by any means) made it more manageable to get me in the door. Well that and my fiancee’s constant nagging that she was so excited for it. She does so much for me that I have to take one for the team for her every so often. Ha ha. Fifty Shades Darker comes instantly to mind in that category. LOL. But I digress. Today we’re here to talk about Sony/Columbia Picture’s new sci-fi picture, Life, not the Milton Bradley board game or the Venom movie spinoff. Only a few indie outings covered this week, but the months ahead promise to be fruitful for smaller films for sure. But in the meantime tales of war woe, odd ghost stories, revenge plans and strong women with no affinity for the almighty all make up the subjects of the four flicks in this weeks edition of Encapsulated Movie Reviews. Check out the skinny on Frantz, Personal Shopper, Dig Two Graves and The Most Hated Woman In America below!

A couple weeks before seeing man tackle Life, I was able to witness the man versus nature in Kong: Skull Island. Both films feel similar in terms of their approach and inspiration. The situations presented are not unfamiliar and the filmmakers seem happier taking advantage of the means afforded to them in playing out their wildest cinematic genre movie fantasies, rather than dwell on deep character building. As a result, while I was a bigger fan of Kong, Life also functions as a condensed thriller influenced by a variety of other movies and video games. That’s the name of the game with these younger filmmakers and this sci-fi horror show is another example of seeing how branching out from familiar territory can pay off.

Unsurprisingly, Power Rangers is the best film yet, as far as seeing the cinematic treatment applied to the popular kid’s action TV series. More surprising is how well this film manages to work in spite of itself. There are some terrible choices made in regards to the direction and delivery of plot. However, as a coming-of-age film that happens to end with a giant kaiju battle in broad daylight, there is something to be said for Lionsgate’s efforts to compete with the bigger studios in terms of large scale action movies.

I was not a huge fan of this franchise going in, but I did manage to have a lot of fun with this one. Hailed as “a crazy, stunt-filled action spectacular” (Scott Mendelson, Forbes) and “a shot of pure adrenaline” (Joey Nolfi, Entertainment Weekly), xXx: Return of Xander Cage x-plodes on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand May 16, 2017 from Paramount Home Media Distribution. X-cited fans can be the first to get it two weeks early on Digital HD May 2. Continue reading ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage X-plodes on 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray This May!’

Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio most known for those darn Minions. Actually, I enjoy the Despicable Me films, its just the one that focused on the little side characters was a giant waste of time (Though, I’m sure those seven and under probably loved it). While that’s the flagship, they’ve actually carved quite a remarkable track record in six short years. All but two of their films have made over a half a billion dollars worldwide. Which, one of those two was The Lorax which did exceedingly well at 348 million worldwide. They hit big in summer and winter in 2016, showing they are much more than the Minion house. The Secret Life of Pets almost made a billion dollars in the summer and the film we are reviewing here, Sing, made over half a billion running up against Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. They appear to be a major force to be reckoned with, holding their own in a world usually owned by Disney and Pixar. Sing proved to be quite popular, not just with audiences, but seemingly winning over critics as well. It comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 21st! Continue reading ‘Sing (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

A remarkable collaboration between Academy Award®-winning director/animator Michael Dudok de Wit (2000, Best Animated Short Film, Father and Daughter) and the legendary animation house Studio Ghibli (2003 Academy Award®-winner, Best Animated Feature Spirited Away; My Neighbor Totoro), THE RED TURTLE arrives on Blu-ray™, DVD & Digital on May 2 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. A stunning, wordless examination of one man’s solitary search for survival and companionship, THE RED TURTLE was an Academy Award®-nominee for Best Animated Feature Film, won both the Annie Award for Best Independent Animated Film and the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and has a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 20th Century Women comes from writer/director Mike Mills of whom I only familiar with his film Thumbsucker, which was one of the first films that was highly recommended to me by Scott Mendelson early on in our friendship. It was a terrific coming of age comedy, the best of what seemed to have a lot of similar ones like it back in 2005, and one of the best films that year. This film, featuring a single mother tasking two younger women with helping to shape her 15 year old son’s adolescence, is my first venture with Mills since. I highly enjoyed the trailer when I saw it back during December (Actually had me cracking up aloud at a few moments), but wasn’t able to get to it during its theatrical run. It looked like another big awards run movie for Annette Bening, but the film wound up only getting nominated for Best Original Screenplay. The film very much offers far more than its lack of award season nods would lead you to believe. 20th Century Women will be available to purchase on (21st century, yok yok) Blu-ray March 28th.
