Oliver Stone Exposes ‘Snowden’ Pretty Plainly (Movie Review)

snowden thumbPutting acclaimed and occasionally controversial writer/director Oliver Stone behind the lens for a movie about Edward Snowden seemed like an intriguing proposition. It could be a film to take him out of the funk he’s been in for quite some time now. At 69 years of age, Stone’s intentions can certainly be interesting, but why does Snowden still feel so tame? The man who gave us JFK and Born on the Fourth of July can clearly make a confident and compelling feature bristling with larger ideas and themes, but his latest effort seems to lack the risk-taking energy that once helped him stand out among his peers.

De Palma On Blu-ray – A Father/Son Chicken Finger Trip Tribute

De-Palma-bluray-160x160Today is the day film fans!  The illustrious five-star career dissection doc De Palma all about the master of suspense hits Blu-ray today and even though there’s no formal fanfare via Lionsgate (no review copies here!) I’m still properly paying tribute.  (I give cinematic credit where its due people!)  So to celebrate the release I’m taking fans on a slightly related journey.  As any big Brian fan would know Raising Cain, starring John Lithgow as a wacko with multiple personalities, is one of Brian De Palma’s underrated gems.  So is a little (well, maybe not so little!) emerging fast food watering hole that puts its focus on quality food at a reasonable price – Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers!  (My Texas Toast!)  So me and my kid Will decided to combine our love of both by braving the super long, days ridden, overnight sleeping, multiple person line waiting (and yes there were weirdos with odd personalities to keep the Lithgow legacy alive!) event at a new location opening in Downey, California all in the name of De Palma and chicken.  The prize for the first twenty people in line?  Free food for a year!  So check out the picture tour below to see if we scored in our Mission: Impossible or if we failed like Mission To Mars – enjoy!

A Bigger Splash (Blu-ray Review)

a bigger splash coverPutting a couple Oscar nominees and two more talented performers in a film structured like a 4-person play is one thing. Setting that film on a remote Italian island adds an extra layer. A Bigger Splash made a small splash at the box office this past spring, but won over many critics. Now this provocative thriller is available on Blu-ray for more to discover what exactly is going on underneath the Mediterranean sun.

The Conjuring 2 (Blu-ray Review)

Conjuring-2Three years ago, James Wan took the summer by surprise and by storm with his horror opus, The Conjuring.  A period supernatural horror piece that followed up his highly popular and profitable Insidious.  It followed real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren on one of their documented cases.  A sequel was certain, but while there was a wait, a spinoff film, Annabelle was released and was a hit at the box office in its own right.  However, nobody liked that one.  So it was with great wonder if the Conjuring brand had already lost its steam before the real deal second one had come out.  The answer was a resounding “no” as The Conjuring 2 was a big hit and its box office didn’t match its predecessor, but lived up to it well enough.  We are now going to be getting a third one as well as another Annabelle and another spin off in The Nun (based off the character from this one).  Well, Universal…looks like someone may have beat you to that horror-centric monster movie shared universe…and did so true to the genre.  Warner Bros is bringing its hit to Blu-ray on September 13th with some extras and a digital copy.  Word has it a 4K UHD release was planned but scrapped (No official announcement came though).   Continue reading ‘The Conjuring 2 (Blu-ray Review)’
