Pete’s Dragon Is All Joy And Wonder Covered In Fur (Movie Review)

petes dragon thumbFollowing the success of The Jungle Book and Cinderella, Pete’s Dragon may not be the film people expected Disney to remake next.  Mistakenly seen by some as a classic, that 1977 film came and went with little regard, but co-writer/director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) has swooped in with a low-key character drama that happens to feature a big, green dragon. Fortunately, the film has plenty to offer for anyone in need of a film that is both sweet and soulful.

Oblivion (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

OblivionOblivion is one of those extra special theatrical experiences that I’ll never forget in life.  I owe it all to Aaron Neuwirth.  The year was 2013 and my significant other and I had just moved down to Austin, TX from Cleveland, OH.  This was before Cleveland was a championship town.  We were both lost down here like deer in headlights.  A learning opportunity put me in the close vicinity of staff writer Aaron Neuwirth for a week.  He took me in that Sunday evening for Game of Thrones and even bought a roast beef sub to keep my stomach occupied.  The very next day is when the magic happened.  I forget what we had planned to do, but Aaron texted me and said do you want to see Oblivion.  Back then I wasn’t much of a Tom Cruise fan, but I do like a good science fiction feature.  Plus I was in posh California.  Why would I say no?  So I accepted his invitation.  Surely it wasn’t just so he could justify riding in the carpool lane the entire way there.  I’m kidding!  Ha ha. Anthropoid: The Czech Pearl Harbor (Movie Review)

anthropoid thumbThe story behind operation Anthropoid has become synonymous with the history of WWII-based Czechoslovakia to the point of having several films made about it. There is even another one on the way later this year. For this take on the story, Anthropoid places a heavy emphasis on varying aspects that could play better for one film if the focus was stronger. As it stands, this story of the soldiers behind an assassination mission misses various marks in its first half to make it stronger, but delivers in its second half.

Man, I Hate Cursive (Comic Review)

jim benton 160x160If my kindergarten teacher had promised me that I could tap into the dark arts and summon lemons from the pits of Hell thanks to learning and practicing cursive, I would have taken my cursive lessons a bit more seriously. In the end, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference, for my normal handwriting is still atrocious. That, and I still hate cursive. Moving on, Jim Benton is a madman. His comics are a brilliant breath of fresh air in a webcomics smoking lounge, but he’s still a madman nonetheless. The geniuses always are, unfortunately. Suicide Squad Saves The World With Disappointment (Movie Review)

Suicide SquadSuicide Squad needs no further word of mouth to market this one.  Warner Bros. made plenty sure of that with all the various trailers and TV spots.  Heck, Margot Robbie is practically the poster child of this one.  Who needs the Joker and Batman?  She sells the film herself as Harley Quinn, but seriously.  The concept of taking a bunch of criminals, some of which of which are meta-humans, and making them superheroes.  Well, that’s just plain genius when you think about it.  I mean really.  Really think about how brilliant that idea is.  Go on!  Let it sink in real good.  I believe good or bad Warner Bros. may break some box office records for the month of August.  This is all despite people’s disappointment too with the brooding Batman v Superman (BvS) entry. The Messy Guns: From The Files Of ‘Suicide Squad’ (Movie Review)

suicide squad thumbThere’s a scene at the end of the second act of Suicide Squad where Task Force X, a group of supervillains brought together to fight fire with fire (sometimes literally), hang out in a bar. The idea is to have the group relate to each other and come to the conclusion that the world may actually need them to do some good or die trying. This would be an effective scene were the movie not preceded by so much visual chaos and a lack of strong choices when learning about these characters. It is truly a shame, as Suicide Squad was lined up to be a breakout in a fairly bland summer, only to deliver another disappointing attempt to flesh out a comic universe.
