Everybody Wants Some!! (Blu-ray Review)

Everybody Wants Some!! (Blu-ray Review)Everybody Wants Some!! follows Jake (Blake Jenner) who’s recently been accepted into a Texas college to play on their Baseball Team.  Due to overcrowding, the city has procured housing for the team as they await the start of the semester.  In the meantime, the boys are on the hunt to sow their wild oats among the local class-women.  A mix of colorful personalities round out this ensemble cast.  Though this is pretty much a “guys” movie, there’s plenty of “Baseball Beefcake” for the ladies to enjoy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Comic Review)

Star_Wars_The_Force_AwakensThere are some writers, some artists, and some properties which carry such gravitas it becomes all but impossible for a fan to pass by. An issue one of Star Wars, The Force Awakens, written by Chuck Wendig is a fine example. There was basically zero chance I was going to pass this book up. So it is with great disappointment that I must report that it brought absolutely nothing to the table.

Divergent / Insurgent / Allegiant (Blu-ray Reviews)

The Divergent SeriesBeing a Divergent virgin, when I was recently asked about covering the Blu-ray release of the third film in the series Allegiant (out on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on July 12 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment) my immediate thought was to pass.  How could I review the third installment when I hadn’t seen the other films?  The response was simple – Lionsgate sent me all three.  So below is my rather unconventional, but series comprehensive set of three reviews of Divergent, The Divergent Series: Insurgent and The Divergent Series: Allegiant all taken from the point of view of fresh eyes.  Included are the reviews of the films themselves plus my personal pick for the best featurette on each disc.  (And with some discs containing up to four hours of features it was a daunting task to pick and choose to say the least!)  And again for those looking for specific specs they are detailed and provided at the bottom.  Which movie faction will I choose – read on fans!

Stringers (Comic Review)

stringers_160x160For stringers, people who make a living arriving first on the scene and taking footage of crime scenes and ragging fires, they’re finally getting the cameras turned on themselves and their profession in the eye of pop culture. The film Nightcrawler debuted a few years ago, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, and the crime thriller garnered critical acclaim and even an Academy Award nomination. Meanwhile in the comic book medium, writer Marc Guggenheim got inspired to write Stringers after listening to an NPR story while driving to work at CSI: Miami. The Binding (Blu-ray Review)

BindingAn unsettling spiritual shocker, The Binding shows the darker side of devotion when a religious family’s patriarch begins receiving visions of bloodshed. Written and directed by Gus Krieger, produced by Michael Glassman and Scott Hyman, The Binding presents divine psychological horror through a modern reimagining of the Biblical tale of Abraham, who was commanded by God to bind and kill his infant son. A young minister’s wife (Arrow’s Amy Gumenick) attempts to reconcile her foreboding maternal instincts with her deeply religious husband (Josh Heisler) and his increasingly disturbing intentions. Is he receiving visions from God or unraveling within his own delusions of grandeur? How far will a family’s faith extend when their blind devotion means their violent destruction? Praised for its intelligent design, The Binding became a critical favorite through its celebrated performances and cerebral nuance. Continue reading ‘The Binding (Blu-ray Review)’

The Mermaid (Blu-ray Review)

the mermaid coverCurrently holding the record of being China’s biggest movie of all time, Stephen Chow has directed The Mermaid; a slapstick, romantic comedy with an eye on the fantastical and a heart out for an eco-friendly message. That may sound like a lot, but aside from the lack of kung fu, this film has all the energy found in Chow’s previous hits such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Now audiences will have even more of a chance to check out what has made this film such a popular hit with its new Blu-ray release.

Search Party (Blu-ray Review)

search-party-blu-ray-coverThe co-writer of Old School and The Hangover Part II has made his directorial debut with a road comedy that packs in plenty of comedic talent and attempts to make the most out of an ungainly amount of ridiculous situations. Search Party has a lot of good talent involved, but it unsurprisingly made little impact during its initial (and very limited) theatrical and VOD run. Now the film has arrived on Blu-ray where I had the chance to view the film myself. The results are not pretty.
