Eddie The Eagle (Blu-ray Review)

eddie the eagle coverThere is nothing extraordinary about Eddie the Eagle and that seems completely fitting for the film that tells the story of an earnest young man who simply had a dream. We see lots of sports movies and some approach the genre with fresh eyes, while others revel in clichés. Given the accomplishments of the real Eddie Edwards, it seems only right that the film is a success based on achieving the minimum requirements for being a rousing feature. Now you can enjoy this underdog story on Blu-ray.

‘Finding Dory’ Just Keeps Swimming And Entertaining Audiences (Movie Review)

finding dory banner 2Sink or swim, many studios like to test audiences on whether or not they can get too much of a good thing. While Pixar had made quite a name for itself already, Finding Nemo came along in 2003 and really cemented the studio as the best in the business at that time. Thirteen years later we have the sequel, Finding Dory, which is incredibly entertaining, but also arriving at a time when Pixar is more focused on proving it can continue to be as good as it ever was. A follow up to Nemo may not have been necessary, but there is much to enjoy in what we get to see in this aquatic world.

10 Cloverfield Lane (Blu-ray Review)

10 Cloverfield LaneI’m not sure where to start about 10 Cloverfield Lane in this Blu-ray review.  Do I talk about how much I love this film or do I explore the veil of secrecy it was literally made under?  I mean we all knew J.J. Abrams was busy far, far away in another galaxy making The Force Awakens, but how many people besides his trusted confidants knew anything about this secret project until its initial trailer dropped in January with 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi?  However, the real question should probably address the conundrum that how does one or lets say the uninitiated with 10 Cloverfield Lane go into this?  Do you treat it as a direct sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield expecting more or less the same or is it really just a blood relative or as Abrams calls it a spiritual successor?  These questions and more I hope to tackle and answer below in the main body of my Blu-ray review.  So what are you waiting for?  Get your reading on! ‘Now You See Me 2’ Brings More Magic Tricks And Shenanigans To The Table (Movie Review)

now you see me 2 tymbThe core concept behind these Now You See Me films is making heist movies with magicians. That sounds incredibly fun to me and apparently many others, as the first film was a sleeper hit, paving the way for this sequel. Now You See Me 2 takes the ‘bigger is better’ route seen with most sequels and ups the ante for our main characters. The film has some of the same issues from the first, meaning the plot really only works if you don’t think too hard about it, but plenty of positives actually make this film even more enjoyable.

‘The Conjuring’ Scares Up More Demons In A Lengthy Sequel (Movie Review)

the conjuring 2 thumbAfter stepping out of the horror realm to put his foot on the gas and deliver the huge action blockbuster that was Furious 7, director James Wan returns to what he knows best with a sequel to his 2013 horror hit The Conjuring. The Conjuring 2 pretty much gives audiences what they are looking for, as far as spooky mainstream horror, but at over two hours, I wish it had more going on. While the film is sound on a technical level and startling when it chooses to be, there was only so much to take away from the characters and story, which felt more engaging the first time around.

‘The Conjuring 2’ Doubles Down On The Scares, But Not Much Else (Movie Review)

The Conjuring 2There hasn’t been that much buzz leading up to the theatrical release of The Conjuring 2.  While it took me a couple watches to warm up to the first installment (my Blu-ray review here), I guess what I’m most surprised is the return of James Wan in the directors chair.  After he got the invite to helm Furious 7, I guess I never really expected him to come back to something so small or in the horror genre anytime soon.  I think he did a great job on Furious 7, but what do I know.  Maybe it was too much for him and he wanted to go back to something simple before moving on to err…Aquaman, but I digress.  Nevertheless, the horror mastermind of James Wan is back for better or worse to lead us on another supernatural adventure in The Conjuring 2, releasing in theaters this coming weekend, July 10th. World of Warcraft, The Cinematic Adventure

World of WarcraftWhen I first watched the trailer for the World of Warcraft movie I was upset. I saw a franchise that was so rich in lore, and had such a large and hardcore fan base, but such a terrible looking movie. I remember finding the trailer on my Facebook newsfeed, watching it, scrolling away, then going back to watch it again in disbelief and disappointment. At first, it looked so cliché, and so simple, I felt like it may possibly be what finally brought the mighty Blizzard Entertainment to a thaw. Today, right now, I’m here to tell you that when I was sitting in that dark theater, surrounded by tons of World of Warcraft fans hoping and praying for a miracle, and the title screen faded and the movie started… I was pleasantly surprised. The World Of ‘Warcraft’ Is Vast, Ambitious And Ultimately Unsatisfying (Movie Review)

WRC_Tsr1Sht_Sword_1102_RGB_1With Warcraft, any inherent silliness that comes from seeing this live-action video adaptation is pushed to the side thanks to tremendous visual effects that effectively incorporate real facial expressions to develop truly believable CG characters. Sadly, this only concerns the orc characters. The rest of the film contains too many unenjoyable human characters and attempts to cram so much story amidst all the world building. These faults unfortunately turn an ambitious endeavor from director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) into another misfire for the sub-genre. However, if you want a hardcore fantasy film, you certainly got it.

Mr. Right (Blu-ray Review)

Mr. Right (Blu-ray Review)This is the kind of movie where you really have to go into it with a sense of lightheartedness and fun.  Mr. Right is by no means something one should take seriously at all.  Now I’m not saying that this is a BAD thing.  I’m simply trying to prepare you for some pretty wack stuff!  The best way I’ve found to describe it would be if the Deadpool movie had a prequel about Wade’s life before he got his super powers.  The film opens with Martha, (Anna Kendrick) who has just broken up with her boyfriend in what could only be described as hilariously awful.  While still in a haze from her bizarre ordeal, she encounters a charming stranger (Sam Rockwell) at the the supermarket who turns out to be a “reformed” assassin.  And by reformed I mean, he no longer kills people for money.  Instead, he kills those who HIRE him to kill people.  Because murder is wrong.

Touched with Fire (Blu-ray Review)

TWF_BD_3DSkew (615x717)I’m not really big on movies that focus on mental illness.  Most of them usually end up being cripplingly sad or fraught with turmoil throughout the entire film.  When I go to a movie I like to be lifted up in some way.  Another thing is that this film focuses on the lives of two poets. Which in my experience usually means you’re in for a lot of pretentious ramblings that make me want to pull my eyes out from boredom.  But I’m very happy to report that Touched with Fire is a powerful, moving, and sometimes funny exception to that rule.
