I have to admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad when it was announced and especially after seeing stills of the Killer Croc or whatever his name is. However, everything started to shift emotionally within me when the first trailer dropped. Then came the next and so on and they just get better. Despite not being a huge Margot Robbie fan, she actually has me excited for his portrayal of Harley Quinn. In fact, the only one who has me nervous now is Jared Leto’s performance of my beloved Joker. He just doesn’t look right, but all will be forgiven when this film rocks my world in August, right? Absolutely! Continue reading ‘New Suicide Squad “Blitz” Trailer!’

It’s no surprise that Marvel has rebooted the Black Panther series. After all, they have their blockbuster movie, Captain America: Civil War, coming out May 6th, which will be introducing T’challa, the Black Panther, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s not at all uncommon for Marvel to hype looming movies by pushing related video games, action figures, and comics leading up the release date. Sometimes these endeavors are more about raising awareness, and of course, making a buck, which can unfortunately compromise the integrity of the project. I’ve seen it many times before, which is why I’m so happy to report that Black Panther isn’t just a marketing device. It’s an ambitious, original, top notch book which has quickly become a must read for me.

This year’s early January horror release was The Forest, which allowed Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer a chance to take the spotlight in a leading role in a film focused on making a ghost story out of the infamous Aokigahara Forest in Japan. Of course, the key words there were ‘early January horror release’. I missed this one in theaters, but have now had the chance to check it out on Blu-ray. Find out if this simple thriller is spooky enough to watch at home or if you should take a hike elsewhere.

It is great to be surprisingly entertained by something. I am never seeing a movie with hopes to not enjoy it, but I have been decidedly mixed on the films of Melissa McCarthy. This is why I am so happy to say that I not only enjoyed another movie featuring her in a starring role, but also happened to find her hysterical in it. Maybe I just wanted to laugh, but The Boss won me over like a boss.

Welcome to my new weekly column featuring my pull-list (the comics to which I subscribe and have set aside for me at my local comic shop, for the uninitiated) and recommendations, titles that might not float my proverbial boat, but might be interesting to some of our readers. Every Wednesday a load of new comics is delivered to your local comic shop (or Comixology, if you prefer reading digitally). This Wednesday is no different, except that there is a lot of great content being released this week. As such, I’ll be skipping the recommendations and going straight for the juiciest morsels. Let’s get to it! Continue reading ‘Weekly Comic Book Recommendations – 4/6/16 (Comics)’

At its very best, Hardcore Henry has a lot in common with 2006’s Crank, starring Jason Statham. Both films have the sort of logic you would find in a video game and rarely take their foot off the gas to deliver anything all that deep. The difference is getting a personality you enjoy from Statham, while Hardcore Henry plays as a first person shooter, where the hero has no discernible personality. It makes for a decent one-time watch in terms of visual ambition, but the action we see hardly qualifies the film for higher acclaim.

Writer/director Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Lifeforce) puts an uproarious spin on the zombie apocalypse movie in 1985’s cult classicTHE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, starring Clu Gulager (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), James Karen (Mulholland Drive) and Don Calfa (Weekend at Bernie’s). Considered one of the campiest undead romps of its time, the film helped launch the career of scream queen Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama) and features a killer soundtrack with tracks from many songs from punk artists such as The Cramps, T.S.O.L. SSQ and 45 Grave. On July 19, 2016, SCREAM FACTORY™ is proud to present THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set, which includes a brand new 2K scan of the film and over 12 hours of extras!
