I was intrigued to see a new film from the director of Children of Heaven, starring The Good, The Bad, The Weird’s Lee Byung-hun. Memories of the Sword is a historical drama that balances epic drama with thrilling swordplay and martial arts. The film is every bit as lavish as you would expect and the Blu-ray’s technical presentation certainly supports that. However, being another film that takes on the dreamlike atmosphere of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon can only take you so far if the story is not that engaging.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that most people hear “Archie comics” and dismiss it as kid’s stuff. I say that, because that’s exactly what I did. But I’m here to tell ya, this book is fantastic for fans of any age. If it wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t have kept reading it. What’s more, there was a time, way back when, that comics were actually written with the express intention of being read by kids. That Mark Waid (The Flash, Daredevil), Fiona Staples (Saga), Veronica Fish (Pirates of Mars), and the fine folks over at Archie Comics are making a such an all-around great book, which just so happens to be great for kids to read, is a win for children comic fans, it’s a win for adult comic fans, and frankly it’s a win for the comic industry.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating our heroes by recreating their legacy through film. Race is another sports biopic that delivers strong enough performances matching scenes recreating important events in history, with an ending featuring ‘wrap it up’ text over photos of the real people involved. It is simple enough to admire, but falls in the category of biopics that have little to offer other than the facts.

If you needed a reminder that 17th century living was rough, The Witch is certainly a film that will get under your skin. Here’s a story of a Puritan family forced out of society and attempting to make a living through simple means. This is not easy, but the threat of witchcraft exacerbates things in a film that is every bit as creepy as it is staggeringly authentic to its setting.

Southbound, out now on various Video On-Demand services (Amazon Video, iTunes), weaves four different stories together into a playful take on anthology horror to create a strange, well-scored, creepy ride down a desert highway. While the stories don’t have a common theme, their connecting tissue comes in the form of a radio program that appears in each short and a change in point-of-view or, in one case, a character moving from one story right into the next one. It is a clever way to make it the entire film feel like a cohesive project, which has its advantages and disadvantages as far as effective storytelling goes. Luckily, despite some setbacks, each short film succeeds at keeping interest and maintaining an overall feel of unease in the viewer. Let’s take a look at Southbound. It is not at all rare to see a biopic focused on a tortured genius arrive in theaters during the later months of the year for awards consideration. This is why Steve Jobs easily succeeds, as the Danny Boyle-directed film follows an unconventional structure, setting it apart from the pack. As a result, Aaron Sorkin‘s brilliant script has evolved into one of the most electrifying films of the year. Sadly, it bombed in theaters, but you can now get your hands on this solid Blu-ray package.
