When I first saw of this film’s title, I thought, “Wow! A movie about the Freemasons!” However, that was not the case. The 33 is in fact a film about the horrible Chilean mine collapse that took place in 2010, trapping 33 miners in its depths (200 stories down, to be exact). While these hard-working souls went into the belly of the earth to literally do the dirty work of others, it was an unbreakable bond that would soon forever bind the group of men as they attempted to survive being buried alive.

There is something to be said for how close to good the otherwise messy How To Be Single is. Taking a sharp turn from last year’s Valentine’s Day weekend release starring Dakota Johnson, Fifty Shades of Grey, here we have a film that manages to settle down every now and then to provide some genuine laughs and endearing moments. The film is sadly too cluttered and lacking in much depth beyond anything that can’t be explained in a self-gratifying ending voice-over monologue, but it does have its moments.

Another year, another sequel to a cult-favorite comedy. 15 years after Zoolander served as a light and silly comedy to help people laugh again, following the 9/11 tragedy that occurred weeks earlier, we now have Zoolander 2, which is severely lacking in laughs. The film is full of cameos and gags, but the idea of making things bigger and wilder only goes so far when the foundation is so weak and the jokes are so dull.

Ask and you shall receive. After three films in the Daniel Craig era of James Bond that each ended with us believing the character had become the Bond of legend, Spectre decides to put its foot down and throw us into a classic adventure with 007. Sure, the film is still playing with a somewhat grounded sense of reality that comes with the territory of modern action filmmaking, but this globe-trotting adventure is full of all the explosive action that is bound to come with a $250+ million price tag. The only question is whether or not its hefty cost and extended run time were worth it.

More than three years ago, 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanished – 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: zero. This is the setting for a tale of two families: the Garveys, who have moved to this special place, and whose lives were forever changed by the Departure, and the Murphys, a local family that seems to have been spared from an event that shook the rest of the world. But even in the town of Miracle, you can’t escape your past. This “immersive, deeply satisfying drama” (Jen Chaney, Esquire) delivers profound mystery, heart-pounding action, stocking controversy and startling beauty in all 10 gripping Season Two episodes. I’m sure it’s part of my nature, but I think was one of the most pessimistic people going into the Deadpool screening this past Thursday evening. It’s not because I feared that every funny, ludicrous moment was probably played out in the trailers, but instead overtime I think of Deadpool I think of that terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine outing. Now I dot know about you, but that first solo Wolverine film always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, since this particular Deadpool film has been blessed with a glorious R-rating and some sweet marketing to boot. I’m all about second chances and forgiveness in 2016. So what the hell?! The over-the-top stunts and chaotic action pieces in the trailers kind of left me reminiscent of one of my favorite films from the mid-2000s, Crank. I realize that may be a giant stretch, but dammit…this is my Deadpool movie review, not yours! Continue reading ‘Deadpool: Chimichangas For Everyone! (Movie Review)’

The tandem of Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics have churned out one animated feature after another. We have seen a number of titles featuring some of DC’s most popular characters such as the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman features. There have even been a few featuring the Justice League in one capacity or another. I’m not sure of sales figures, but these things have to be successful or else they wouldn’t keep putting such strong efforts toward them. With their latest release, we look at Batman: Bad Blood, a new suspenseful 72-minute adventure and one that’s not meant for the kiddies.

While they are among the most acclaimed modern filmmakers of today, one of the criticisms leveled at Joel and Ethan Coen is how mean they are to their characters. There may be truth in that, but Hail, Caesar! certainly says a lot about their love for the movies. Set in the 1950s, the Golden Age of Hollywood, this film is a mystery-comedy where the mystery hardly matters and a group of loosely-connected characters serve as a tribute to what makes the movies so grand.
