There are two small, but deeply touching moments in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that played the right note on my sense of nostalgia and simultaneously confirmed the true feeling of humanity that was restored to the Star Wars franchise in 2015. I will discuss both of the moments below, but first I want to give a shout out to Shohan Cagle for detailing fairly precisely the same reasons that Inside Out would have been the movie I wrote about in this column if I didn’t choose the one I did. Please go check out his contribution to this “Why We are So Blue” set of articles on this website. Continue reading ‘The 2015 Film That Made Bron Cry: Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Umbrella sword in hand, the titular Lady Snowblood carves a bloody path to blu-ray at last. Masterfully reproduced in all it’s gloriously vibrant violence, Lady Snowblood and Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance serve as wonderfully entertaining, timeless, and influential stories of fate, lineage, strife, revenge, exploitation, and ultra-violent retribution. Heavily inspiring Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, Lady Snowblood is a bountiful well of beautiful cinematography, masterful storytelling, and powerful music. Even the theme song, sung by Lady Snowblood herself (Meiko Kaji), is done with such succinct self-awareness and grandiosity that it’s difficult to understand why Lady Snowblood was never propelled into a full-fledged film series similar to Zatoichi. Generally speaking these types of survival films don’t really interest me. But considering the amount of next level talent involved such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, and Jason Clarke I figured that it might be worth checking out. And I’m really glad that I did! When I saw this movie in the theaters the nearest option was to see it in 3D. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of 3D so I wasn’t exactly stoked to see it this way. But I gotta say, the 3D experience for this film is WELL worth it! They take advantage of the wide sweeping shots from the climbers perspective that provides a captivating visual experience. Though some scenes do rely on CGI to fill out a few spots, it’s done sparingly and never takes you out of the moment. The 3D gives you so much more depth and scope that you wouldn’t quite get in the standard format. Continue reading ‘Everest (Blu-ray Review)’

I’ve been asked what made me sad in comics in 2015, and it took about two seconds consideration to come to my conclusion. Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor. Let me be clear about one thing right off the hammer, I wasn’t sad about the delivery, the script, the art, the plot, or the direction. There’s nothing wrong with the comic. It’s actually what’s so devastatingly right about it that got to me. Continue reading ‘The 2015 Comic That Made Wes Cry: The Mighty Thor’

Be warned, there are spoilers ahead for Inside Out. There’s just no way to talk about this movie and why it effected me so much without going into the details.
I feel like 2015 was the year of surprise hits. You go in expecting to see some by the numbers idea that you’ve seen a million times, only to walk out with a completely different perspective. And that is exactly what happened for me with Inside Out. I was fully prepared for a somewhat amusing kids movie with a few adult jokes thrown in to keep people interested. But low and behold I got an emotional gut punch from outta no where!

Issue 1 of Star Wars: Obi-wan & Anakin came out 1/6/16, and I’m going to talk about it, because it’s Star Wars, and what other explanation is needed? Before all that though, let’s take a look at how Marvel came to produce first issues for Star Wars for the first time in decades.
The juggernaut that is Disney already owned Marvel Comics by the time they acquired Lucas Films, so the writing had to be on the wall for Dark Horse Comics, who’d been publishing Star Wars comics for twenty-five years. After all, what were the chances that Disney would allow one of their properties to compete with another? The answer is no chance. Continue reading ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin #1’

Winner of the prestigious Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion Award (Best Picture), Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead is based on Tom Stoppard’s award-winning play. It’s the inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the viewpoint of two of the work’s supporting, but certainly more outrageous, characters. In this cleverly inspired version, however, the Shakespearean equivalents of Laurel and Hardy get a chance to take the lead roles in a dazzling setting where illusion and reality overlap! Critically acclaimed and featuring witty performances by Richard Dreyfuss, Tim Roth and Gray Oldman, this brilliant motion picture delivers exceptional one-of-a-kind entertainment! 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi has a trailer that screams unmistakably this was made by Sir Michael Bay. That could either be a good thing or a bad one. If you think the first Transformers flick or The Island in my case, then that’s good. However, if you think the last three Transformers films, then that’s very bad. I digress. Let’s give the guy the benefit of the doubt here. Say what you want about the man, but Michael Bay knows how to deliver on the balls-to-the-wall action in films. That much you can take to the bank. So getting back to what I originally was saying, I like military films, and the trailer for this one was pretty rad, so yeah…I’m thinking I want to watch 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi despite it being a January release. All one really needs to do is take a glance at the box art for the Blu-ray of Get Mean to make the decision that it is going to be awesome. Look at that box art! A four barreled shotgun? A man draped in sticks of TNT? And then the young woman in one of those classic “John Carter of Mars” poses? All of these elements spell greatness. It shouldn’t even matter that the film itself is even more ridiculous than the box art, you already know you are going to be in for a crazy time. Let’s get mean. 2014’s Ride Along was a forgettable action-comedy thriving on the chemistry of a clichéd mismatched partnership. It came out in January and while many may have just written it off, the film was a huge success. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it, but it was fine for a lazy comedy to watch on TV. Now we have Ride Along 2, which is a pretty easy example of diminishing returns in full force. A lack of laughs or much of anything of note has led to a film that is just kinda sits there and does nothing useful for anyone involved.
