Watching The Finest Hours made me think of how commendable it was to see Disney produce a historical disaster drama about a daring Coast Guard rescue. It is just too bad that all the visual effects used to convey a sense of scale were not enough to ever make the stakes feel that high. While the actual story is quite amazing, the approach to this film left me wanting more than just a maudlin handling of the people involved.

After a fairly lengthy wait, especially considering today’s handling of sequel schedules, Po and the Furious Five are back for more Kung Fu Panda fun. This third entry in DreamWorks Animation’s solid martial arts action-comedy franchise does not quite reach the great heights of the prior two installments, but that doesn’t mean this film is bad at all. There is a ton of fun to take in with Kung Fu Panda 3 and it comes with great action, big laughs and plenty of heart.

This season opens with the Turkish army as their ships approach the shores of Italy, poised to attack. Meanwhile Da Vinci is at the ready with one of his inventions; he has secured multiple cannons together in a way that they can be fired and maneuvered by one person. But what he doesn’t know is that the Turks have a secret weapon of their own. But does this season hold up to it’s predecessors? I’m a big fan of
David S. Goyer and the work he’s done on the
DC films such as
“The Dark knight Trilogy” and
“Man of Steel”. So I was excited to check this show out! Though Goyer’s dialogue may be a bit weak at times his strength generally lies in his character development.

The 9th, and final issue of Marvel’s Secret Wars has finally come out. Why is this a big deal? Well, it depends on who you ask. Opinions on projects of this scale vary widely, which is great because it gets people talking. Regardless of how you felt about it, the fact that it happened at all is a big deal. That’s the very nature of these major cross-over, all hands on deck type epic events. Generally when Marvel finishes such a behemoth of an endeavor, the landscape we’d been accustomed to will have shifted drastically. Fan boys and girls will look back for generations to come and discuss the magnitude of the event, and how things were never the same after. These events can be massive triumphs, as proven by Civil War and A vs X, but sometimes they fall short…

I remember it like it was only a few years ago. It was 1982 and for my fifth birthday I received the Masters of the Universe figure that I was hoping for; Stratos. The jetpack-strapped, goggle-wearing birdman delighted my little childhood mind like only a He-Man figure could, as he would enter the foray in the imaginative fight against Skeletor and his evil minions. As time went on and I grew older, it was through some parental encouragement that had me peddling my collection at garage sales over time. Three words. Oh, the regret. Though I’ve long since outgrown the cartoon and playtime with these figures, it almost feels as if this band of unique heroes and villains have been lost to toy history. That is until now when a team of veteran filmmakers seek to bring all this nostalgia back into our lives.

I have to admit I may have been losing faith in the DC side of comic book movies. Don’t get me wrong, the Dark Knight trilogy was fantastic, but it ended, and what else was inspiring? Not Green Lantern. Not Man of Steel. So there I was wishing for DC to get in the game, to hit us with some of that freaking fantastic material we all know is sitting in their vaults, when this little beauty of a trailer drops.
