In a year that has featured many entertaining spy films, Barely Lethal is a spy comedy for teens, with an ideal to have fun with the genre and serve as its own clever entry into it. With a cast featuring both hip young stars like Hailee Steinfeld and Sophie Turner, along with veteran Samuel L. Jackson, there was certainly enough effort put in to add quality to the simple premise. But does this film serve as something truly worthwhile, or is it just another disposable teen comedy with some fun action beats? The Blu-ray is now here for you to find out.

When the Blu-ray includes trailers for The Condemned, See No Evil, See No Evil 2, and Leprechaun: Origins, you know you’re about to see the finest film of the year. Lo and behold, those rascals at WWE have done it again. I don’t follow wrestling, so I have no clue who The Big Show is, but with a name like that, how can you go wrong? Vendetta offers enough goofiness to sustain ten films, with acting so over the top and action so brutal and bloody, I have to ask myself, “is this possibly my new favorite film?” (No.) Continue reading ‘Vendetta (Blu-ray Review)’

I have a fascination with Nicolas Cage that is paramount to most things in my life. I googled bio-sonar once because I was on a walk in the dead of the night on the hem of a field of straw far from existence and I thought I heard Nicolas Cage’s voice from Adaptation and immediately jumped to the conclusion that we must have a secret way of communicating, a harmonic composition if I may. Then I thought to myself, “that must be my new cochlear implant malfunctioning.” And then I thought — “I don’t have a cochlear implant” — and then I thought, “I am a microbat bat and Nicolas Cage is a horseshoe bat and we can communicate through echolocation.” I had this friend who was telling me a story once about how he’d met Nicolas Cage, after the conversation I thought about what an imaginative yarn my friend was spinning, yet I found myself jogging and soon running to said location and their I saw an Owl. It looked me in the eye and I knew it was him. I chased after it but it soon left me to the light of the moon and there I did the same hand gesture that they do in Mad Max when someone dies — in a state of displeasure I comforted myself by walking home and watching a crowd pleaser,The Runner.

Sweden’s Ghost is back with their highly anticipated 3rd album, Meliora. Steeped in subversive themes of humanism, counterculture and anti-establishmentarianism, the album was produced by Klas Ahlund, mixed by Andy Wallace, and is their heaviest and most melodic project to date. Lead singer Papa Emeritus II has been ‘let go’ and will be replaced by the younger, more powerful Papa Emeritus III, who expertly leads his Ghouls through 10 scorching tracks, including ‘Cirice’, which means church in Old English and is an ode to institutions inventing the problem so that they can offer the solution.

The movie title No Escape (not the 1994 one) sounds so familiar, doesn’t it? At least to me it does. It sounds like it could easily be a name of a KISS song from the 1980s or something when they were struggling to find their sound during the Killers era, but I digress. Perhaps what shocked me even more was seeing Owen Wilson on the movie poster when I received the press invite to cover this one. I instantly thought why have I never heard of this film and of course what is funny man Owen Wilson doing in a film like this. I almost dismissed this one had it not been for the trailer. After viewing it I thought wow if it’s a great story and Owen Wilson can really pull this one off, it could be quite good me thinks. After all, I thought his brother Luke did a great job in the serious role he portrayed in 2007’s Vacancy, one of my earliest Blu-ray titles in my collection (a little Brian White trivia for ya). So let’s do this. Let’s talk some No Escape. Continue reading ‘There’s ‘No Escape’-ing The Intensity Here (Movie Review)’

I have to be honest with y’all. I’ve been anxiously waiting for this day to come ever since I first saw Mad Max Fury Road this past May. I’ve seen it not once, not twice, not even three times, but five triumphant times in the theater with one of them being a gigantic IMAX screen presentation. Like a preacher to his gospel, I’m a natural born marketer for this feature. Through natural selection I was born to promote this one, and rightfully so because this is the dope, action movie event of the year. Others have tried to imitate, but none this year can ever come close to matching all the brilliance and insanity Mad Max Fury Road has to offer. It contradicts that old saying, you CAN have your cake and eat it too. The proof is in Mad Max Fury Road pudding. Now if for ANY reason you’re reading this Blu-ray review before September 1st and this feature is still playing in your local neighborhood cinema, drop everything and go see this on the biggest screen possible right the hell now. Then come back of course and finish reading this Blu-ray review, pre-order it, etc. Ladies and gentlemen…start and REV your engines…I present to you Mad Max Fury Road on Blu-ray.
