Here is a film I cannot wait for more people to have the chance to see. Hailed as “tonally flawless” (Wall Street Journal) and “one of the flat-out funniest films in ages” (Los Angeles Times), the “hilarious” (Vanity Fair) mockumentary WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS debuts on Blu-ray and DVD July 21, 2015 from Paramount Home Media Distribution. Written and directed by Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs. Shark), the film is a smart and witty send-up that follows an endearingly unhip quartet of vampires. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

Oh those lovely Italian movies from 1980s. Find one cool, hit American genre movie and exploit, exploit, exploit it. Much of their fare in the decade were either zombie films inspired by George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (But really set into motion by Zombie Flesh Eaters) or post apocalyptic wastelands akin to George Miller’s The Road Warrior. Personally, these are pretty trashy, but I dig them. They are great late night movies and can be fun to watch for reasons both intentional and unintentional. While knocking things off, they often try to push their own limits, making for an unpredictable and bolder adventure than your common popcorn cinema escape. Blue Underground is giving us three of these classics from director Enzo G. Castellari. Today, we’re covering Escape From The Bronx. Where comedy and drama are more universal categories, the documentary can be somewhat polarizing depending on the subject matter. In 1980, the USA Olympic Hockey team defeated the Soviet Red Army team for a shot at the gold medal game. This was not simply a grand moment in sports. It was democracy defeating communism. It was David, in the form of a team of college kids, defeating Goliath (professional-aged players with years of chemistry together). The documentary Red Army chronicles this event, but does so from the unique and previously unheard perspective of the Russian players. However, the content is not merely limited to the Olympic upset. Read on to discover the full attributes of this very immersive film. Continue reading ‘Red Army (Blu-ray Review)’

I have had a love/hate relationship with Gotham this past year. On the one hand it has an interesting premise and certainly tries to deliver a graphic novel experience-come to life. On the other hand, the show was plagued with tone-related issues, character problems, and more. That said, the series was entertaining enough and audiences certainly tuned in, given the promise of a second season and plenty of other related announcements. Everyone will be able to see the show for themselves this September, when the complete first season of series comes to Blu-ray, packed with special features. Find out more about this upcoming release by continuing on in this post.

Let’s start this one off with act of admission. Insidious Chapter 3 isn’t exactly going to get any brownie points in the original title category. That much can be determined without even sitting down to witness the feature. And unlike the first and second films, this “third” chapter does not follow the timeline nor does it mesh with the conclusion set up in the second installment (although that’s not completely true). Instead, it’s one of those dreaded prequels! Boo on that if not done right! However, let’s not be too hasty and judge a book by its cover. Every movie is subject to a trial and that’s what we are here today for. It’s the critic in me versus Insidious Chapter 3. Who will prevail? Read on to find out. Bwahaha… Continue reading ‘Insidious Chapter 3 – The Rise of Elise Rainier (Movie Review)’

The critically acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire is finally available in a complete box set, and while the packaging itself isn’t very impressive, it’s definitely an example of substance over style. For those unfamiliar with the 40-time Emmy nominated Prohibition-era crime drama starring the incredible Steve Buscemi, this collection is the perfect tool to dive into the compelling series. It is a bit strange to go into detail about a movie such as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, but given that I was once a big fan of the series (and still chuckle when it comes up), along with being a big fan of the first movie, I almost find myself at odds in what is so clearly the thing to judge about this film. The fact is, ‘Sponge out of Water’ is the exact cliché of modern sequels, it’s not only bigger and louder, but also darker and grittier than the first film, and even features a villain who had planned to get caught the whole time, during the second act. Additionally, as opposed to the first film, which had a mix of the humor the series is known for with some kid-friendly morals, this sequel is more about anarchy and keeping a level of good-spirited fun amidst the constant craziness on display. With that perspective in mind, I had a good time watching this movie, even if it is more of just a random adventure, than something significant. Now the Blu-ray is out for one of the bigger hits from earlier this year.

Entourage is going to be a hard movie to judge fairly considering I did not see a single episode of the 8 HBO seasons of the show until late last week. And to be honest with y’all, I really regret that considering the film picks up where the series kind of left off, chronicling the continuing career of movie star Vincent Chase and his “entourage” of friends. However, at least by taking in the first season of Entourage last week, I was exposed to Vince and friends’ remarkable world of partying and girls, not to mention the ebb and flow of the HBO series. I guess you could say that I was at least armed with the basics before going into the screening this past Monday night and like they taught us after school on G.I. Joe, knowing is half the battle (I hope I don’t date myself there with that one). So I’m going to confidently judge this film on its merits as a standalone product below, not some elongated episode of the show continuing on where the eighth season left off. Here goes nothing.
