Scarecrows (Blu-ray Review)

ScarecrowsTrespassers will be violated. Scream Factory proudly presents the action-packed supernatural thriller Scarecrows. Making its Blu-ray debut, this release comes packed with new bonus features, including audio commentaries with director William Wesley and producer Cami Winikoff, and interviews with special make-up effects creator Norman Cabrera and actor Ted Vernon.  This is a sort of horror/slasher/horror-action film that I’d really never heard of.  It comes from a fabled year in horror; 1988.  So, of course I was pretty eager to tear off the plastic and dig into this, seeing what I had been missing out on all these years.  Like many, it has a nice following and set of fans, but would I wind up one of them. ‘It Follows’ Creeps Onto Blu-ray July 14th

It FollowsIn March I had the pleasure of visiting Los Angeles after not being in that beloved city for over two years.   Absence truly made my heart grow fonder, but it did not do anything for the ridiculous traffic out there.  Anyway, one of my most fondest memories from my most recent trip was taking WSB Staff writer Gerard Iribe on a date to see It Follows.  I was blown away by it.  As soon as the credits rolled I turned to Gerard and said was that old school Carpenter Halloween style or what.  He agreed!  We then ate a vegetarian dinner, but I digress.  So here’s the deal…It Follows, the critically acclaimed breakout movie of the year, arrives on Digital HD July 3rd and on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand July 14th from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment.  Check out the rest of the press release down below!  I dare you! The Pyramid (Blu-ray Review)

I am a sucker for anything regarding Egyptology. Even if it’s semi-related and mostly imaginable, I still \want to know what it’s about. When The Pyramid debuted in theaters last December, I made it a point to catch it on the big screen. Unfortunately, this picture was in and out of theaters in record time, relegating the anxious to wait until a disc release. Here we are five months later and the waiting has come to an end! But was it worth it?  Based on the quick exit from the cinema, I didn’t have high expectations. Continue reading ‘The Pyramid (Blu-ray Review)’

‘While We’re Young’ on Blu-ray & DVD June 30

While We're Young Ben Stiller (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Zoolander) and Academy Award® nominee Naomi Watts (Best Actress, The Impossible, 2012; St. Vincent) star in Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach’s (Best Original Screenplay, The Squid and the Whale, 2005) “blisteringly of-the-moment and classically zany” (Variety) comedy, While We’re Young, debuting on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) on June 30th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh, the film takes a “sharp, funny and dead-on accurate” (LA Times) look at the weird, upended logic of urban sophisticates: the older ones embracing their iPads and Netflix, the young ones craving vinyl records and vintage VHS tapes. Released theatrically by A24, While We’re Young features an outstanding ensemble cast including Adam Driver (HBO’s “Girls”), Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables), Charles Grodin (Midnight Run) and Adam Horovitz (Beastie Boys bandmember Ad-Rock).   Continue reading ‘‘While We’re Young’ on Blu-ray & DVD June 30′

Head Out To The ‘Slow West’ This July

slow westI actually was able to see this film at a film festival quite recently and was very fond of what I saw. Slow West is a quirky western certainly worth the time of those who enjoy Michael Fassbender or a bit of weirdness in a genre like this. The film is all about two unlikely allies traveling through 19th century American wilderness in an effort to find a girl. Lots of craziness ensues. The film has earned plenty of acclaim and arrives on Blu-ray on July 7 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

White Collar The Complete Sixth Season (DVD Review)

White Collar Sixth SeasonWhite Collar is a USA Network television series created by Jeff Eastin.  It stars Tim DeKay as an FBI Special Agent and Matt Bomer as a very smart con artist.  The twist here is the latter also works as the former’s informant.  The show has been on for six seasons now and I regret to inform you, in case you did not know, this is the final season.  The six-episode sixth season was only six episodes long and found its run ended this past December.  So what do you say?  We only have six episodes to skim over here in this review.  Are you ready to tackle them with me?  Let’s do this! Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf (Blu-ray Review)

Samurai-AvengerUnjustly ignored on its release, director Kurando Mitsutake’s tale of a modern day blind swordsman assassin turns Japanese genre conventions upside down. Fans have long requested this wild mix of Tarantino and ZATOICHI in HD, and Synapse Films has pulled out all the stops to create an awesome special edition for release only on Blu-ray.  If you’ll remember, Mitsutake is the director of GUN WOMAN, a film that I reviewed last weekend and is coming to Blu-ray the same day.  Set in nowhere and in no time, SAMURAI AVENGER: THE BLIND WOLF is a bloody sushi-western and a modern day action film with a classic samurai essence. Man Pride Vengeance (Blu-ray Review)

Man-Pride-VengeanceIndependent U.S. distributors Blue Underground have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Luigi Bazzoni’s western Man, Pride and Vengeance (1967), starring Franco Nero, Tina Aumont, Klaus Kinski, Guido Lollobrigida, and Karl Schönböck. The preliminary release date set by the distributors was March 24, 2015, but was then changed to May 26th, 2015.  So, now after two months of waiting its finally here.  Blue Underground continues to be one of the premiere American Blu-ray distributors committed to transferring many of the Franco Nero spaghetti westerns to high definition.  I believe this is one of the many non-Django lot that gets labeled as such for sales/promotional reasons and the fact it has Nero and its an Italian western.  But, I’m pretty certain this has nothing to do with those.
