San Andreas: Still Fun Despite Not Being 100% Seismic Accurate

San AndreasIt’s almost summer 2015, but it wouldn’t be another year at the movies without the obligatory disaster film, would it?  No way!  This time out we have the heavyweight Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson leading the pack.  And while the trailers, with the exception of the slow, melodic take on “California Dreamin,” didn’t do much to whet my appetite for this one I was just hoping for at least some senseless fun.  Is that too much to ask?  If I could leave the theater this past Tuesday night with a few giggles had, then it would all be worth it.  Plus, I owe my girlfriend big time for dragging her out of the house against her will assuring her both Tomorrowland and Jupiter Ascending wouldn’t be that bad.  So I guess you could say, I felt trapped under guilt when I received the press invite for this one armed with the knowledge that she really wanted to see San Andreas.  And here we are.  Let’s chat about the chaos, mayhem, destruction and FX down below. Focus (Blu-ray Review)

Focus Blu-ray ReviewFocus is one of those films I initially saw trailers for on television earlier this year and thought to myself nah I’ll skip it.  It just didn’t do anything for me.  Then came all the reviews like Aaron Neuwirth’s positive coverage here (God I miss all his incredible movie reviews).  And so because of all the positive praise this film has garnered, sign me up!  I wanted to see it!  Thankfully Warner Bros. will be releasing this title in retailers everywhere on June 2nd and I just so happen to have exclusive access to one of those Blu-ray Combo Packs now.  So I thought oh what the hell.  Let’s do this!  Let’s review Focus for the people.  And here we are.  Ready to see things sharper?  Well, we’re talking about the Blu-ray format so chances are good that you’re ready.  Here we go! Psychological Thriller ‘Ex Machina’ Infiltrates Blu-ray July 14th

Ex Machina Blu-rayThe stylish, psychological thriller Ex Machina will leave audiences visually and emotionally enthralled when it arrives on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) July 14th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.  After blowing away critics at its U.S.premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, the highly anticipatedsci-fi film was theatrically released by A24 and has been applauded as “sizzlingly smart, gorgeous and astute” (Wall Street Journal), “a triumph” (The Playlist), and “the year’s best sci-fi movie” (Esquire).  I can personally guarantee these claims too.  While it’s not action packed like the trailer may suggest, the film truly delivers by sucking you into one of the greatest human stories of artificial intelligence in our time.  The robot in question here will make you believe and heck, might even make you fall for her.  Find out more below! Foxy Brown (Blu-ray Review)

Foxy-BrownPam Grier teams up once again with Coffy director Jack Hill in this blaxploitation follow-up that was filmed in an astounding 17 days.  Foxy Brown co-stars Antonio Fargas (Conrack, Car Wash), Peter Brown (Teenage Tease, Merrill’s Marauder’s), Terry Carter (Brother On The Run), Sid Haig (Coffy, The Devil’s Rejects, Jackie Brown) and is directed by Jack Hill (Coffy, Switchblade Sisters).  Foxy Brown (Pam Grier, Coffy, Jackie Brown) is “a whole lot of woman” and more. Just you wait and see.  The film itself is intentionally a spiritual follow up to the previous Hill-Grier collaboration, Coffy.  And again, the film once again tuggs along grindhouse-era fan-favorite Sid Haig for a small role in the events.  Olive Films is bringing Foxy Brown to the fold for the firs time in the US, preceded by a release from Arrow Video back in 2013 (Which included a limited edition steel book case).   Continue reading ‘Foxy Brown (Blu-ray Review)’

Coffy (Blu-ray Review)

CoffyPam Grier became a staple of early 1970s blaxploitation films by playing bold, assertive women, starting with Jack Hill’s Coffy. Her character was advertised in the original trailer as the “baddest one-chick hit-squad that ever hit town!” Grier’s role was noted as being the first African-American female to headline an action film.  As many of you may know, I’ve been touting more blaxploitation on Blu-ray since my first wishlist back in 2013.  As a matter of fact, Coffy was at the top of that list.  It appears things are finally turning around here in 2015.  There are many on the slate over the globe throughout the year and on the horizon.  Olive Films is taking on a trio of Pam Grier’s finest.   Coffy was already available in the UK, but its now making its Blu-ray debut here in the US. Request To Close Down The ‘Tomorrowland’ Attraction (Movie Review)

TomorrowlandLet the record show that I had zero interest in ever seeing Tomorrowland.  The various trailers and TV spots did little to interest in me in the film and worst, it reminded me of that God awful Jupiter Ascending piece of garbage )and that is being polite).  There’s no way I ever want to revisit that life experience again!  However, it was a chat amongst the Why So blu staff that sightly changed my point of view.  Such sentiments as “Brad Bird could do no wrong” were tossed about heavily.  Then while attending an IMAX screening of Avengers; The Age of Ultron, we were surprised with a 15-minute action clip of Tomorrowland.  Suddenly, the film didn’t look that bad.  I was now on the fence about Tomorrowland instead of being dead set against it.  So oh why the hell not?  Life’s too short for regrets.  Let’s see what promise Tomorrowland may show.  I do love me some original sci-fi.
