You wanted the best. You got the best! The hottest band in the world…KISS!!! And the roar of the crowd goes absolutely banana nuts crazy. How did that sound? That was my best text recreation of the legendary lines employed at the beginning of KISS’ amazing Alive album, which forever changed the band members’ 4 lives and millions of others (aka the KISS Army) the past 40+ years. And finally, after all these years (as assistant producer Tim Sullivan and director Adam Rifkin can attest to), the 1999 cult classic Detroit Rock City will be coming home to the Blu-ray format and diehard KISS fans everywhere will be shouting it out loud in the privacy of their living rooms courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment/New Line Cinema. Now I have to warn you. Because of this film’s holy grail cult-like status, I don’t know if my below Blu-ray review and my songs of praise can ever truly do this long anticipated HD home media release complete justice, but rest assured that the KISS freak in me is going to treat this like the ultimate fan letter or testament to KISS much akin to how the recording of Alive V would ultimately go down (if it ever did). So here goes nothing. You wanted the best. You got the best…err…you got me!

I find there to be a comfortable understanding in films about characters that go on journeys to find themselves. Regardless of the reason and whether or not the story is based on a real person, I can expect to see a certain kind of arc play out. We will learn what we need to learn about this character, watch them progress, hit various blocks in their path (physically and mentally), and eventually come to some sort of emotional catharsis. Sure, that sums up a lot of movies in general, but these kinds of movies are hardly subtle, yet often quite fulfilling. Maybe it is just due to having such a singular focus when it comes to this kind of story, but I certainly find myself quite invested in them. It also helps when such strong work is on display, which brings me to my thoughts on the rather excellent film Wild, which is now available on Blu-ray.

Back in 2013 we got a “modernized” Carrie remake for “the current generation”. The thought of it from the start had people up in arms. The “WHYYYY???” crybaby fanboys and the such angered that a sacred property was being redone. Yet, they completely were forgetting that its not so sacred, that the Chloe Grace-Moretz film would be the fourth iteration of the Carrie tale in live action form. This double feature set includes the two inbetween that they were forgetting about. There was a sequel (which basically was a newer take on the same tale) and straight up remake made for television. Plus all of these are adaptations from a novel. So, while the most recent wasn’t a good film at all, nobody should have been complaining about the pre-production like this hadn’t been done already and been more accepting of another interpretation. The “cute factor” always plays a big role in animated features made for a family audience. As it stands, I am happy to watch these animated features that manage to balance a level of cuteness with some witty writing, good-natured humor, or other fairly positive elements that make for a good film. Home definitely makes attempts at cuteness, given the way we see certain characters, but I found a lot of that to be undone by the nature of the story that I could not get over. Some unintentionally uncomfortable implications of the “friendly” alien invasion that set up this story ultimately kept me from embracing the film more and the nature of the aliens known as “Boov” did not help much either.

Yeah! I’m excited by this news as when I was in LA a few weeks back I was actually one of the lucky thousands who got to see It Follows on opening weekend, a film which I can only describe as The Rings meets John Carpenter’s old school Halloween. One of the best-reviewed films of the year will expand to 1,200 theaters on Friday. Bolstered by strong word of mouth and critical acclaim, audiences came in droves on opening weekend – Friday, 13th – earning the film $160,089 in just four locations for a per theater average of $40,022. Honestly, It Follows had the best limited opening for a horror film since Paranormal Activity, boasting 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and garnering over $600,000 in box office to date. Check out the rest of the press release below from RADiUS. Continue reading ‘‘It Follows’ Expands to 1,200 Screens’

I have a lot of friends that should be very happy about this trailer based on the HBO Comedy series. Movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), together with his boys, Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Johnny (Kevin Dillon), are back…and back in business with super-agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Some of their ambitions have changed, but the bond between them remains strong as they navigate the capricious and often cutthroat world of Hollywood. And about 11 hours ago Warner Bros. dropped on the Earth Entourage’s “Official Main Trailer.” Enjoy it below! Continue reading ‘Entourage – The Official Main Trailer’

I think I’m actually one of the very few critics out there who didn’t hate Fifty Shades of Grey. Sure I’m not a big fan of the novel of the same name, but the film adaptation doesn’t stray much at all so what you see on the pages is literally what you see on the screen. I can get behind that, but I don’t understand all the haters out there. Nonetheless, I’m my own man, confident and sometimes strong. LOL. So ladies (I’ll leave the gentlemen out of this one), get ready to scream as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are coming home to Blu-ray HD on May 8th. If you don’t believe me, check out the full press release below from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Continue reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey Steams It Up on Blu-ray’
