The Zero Theorem (Blu-ray Review)

Zero-TheoremTerry Gilliam returned to his realm of unique science fiction last year (or 2013 for some) with The Zero Theorem.  Many want to believe this is the third part in some sort of trilogy that include Gilliam’s earlier works of Brazil and 12 Monkeys.  12 Monkeys, by the way, is one of my most cherished and favorite films of all time (No-brainer Top 10).  So, I’m down with Gilliam’s ideals and style that may not appeal or even turn off your common movie-goer.  Gilliam has denied any sort of intentional connection between the three films.  I can see where folks might connect dots or be trying to string them together, but I have to side with Gilliam.  In all honesty, this is just him doing his thing more than it is crafting some sort of masterwork or trilogy in theme.  But, its there if people want it to be, I suppose.  This was a film I was really looking forward to last year in its small release, but it somehow got by me, but here I am with the Blu-ray and very excited to dig into this recent Terry Gilliam opus. Atlas Shrugged Part III: Who is John Galt? (Blu-ray Review)

Atlas Shrugged Part III Blu-ray ReviewAtlas Shrugged Part III, subtitled Who is John Galt?, continues the story of Dagny Taggart and John Galt (once again bizarrely recast with actors Laura Regan and Kristoffer Polaha). In this third and final film adapting Ayn Rand’s novel, Taggart has stumbled upon a self-created utopia of the world’s creative minds have escaped to after overbearing government regulation. A Walk Among The Tombstones (Blu-ray Review)

A Walk Among The TombstonesLiam Neeson stars in A Walk Among the Tombstones, an action-thriller based on Lawrence Block’s bestselling series of mystery novels. Neeson plays Matt Scudder, an ex-cop turned unlicensed private investigator who reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens, TV’s Downton Abbey) hunt down the men who brutally murdered his wife. When the PI learns that this is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that these men have committed this sort of twisted crime, he must blur the line between right and wrong as he races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again. The Longest Week (Blu-ray Review)

Longest-WeekThe Longest Week was released by 20th Century Fox back on January 6th, earlier this year.  This fifteen million dollar budgeted film saw a smaller, limited theatrical release back on September 5th of 2014.  Written and directed by Peter Ganz from a story by Ganz and Juan Iglesias it stars Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde, Billy Crudup, Tony Roberts and Jenny Slate.  The film was released to some of the worst reviews of last year, giving it an unfavorable 11% critic score and 24% audience score on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.  I’m sure Fox is hoping this finds a little bit more life and enjoyment from the home video crowd as it hits the purchase and rental market.

Working Girl (Blu-ray Review)

Working Girl Blu-ray ReviewTruth be told, I had never seen Working Girl before.  However, one look at the Blu-ray’s cover is all it took for me to get that warm and fuzzy feeling that I was about to watch something special simply because of the very young now everyday household names on it.  And after coming off an Alien binge as of late, who am I to refute covering a Sigourney Weaver film?  Ironically though, that wasn’t the main selling point to me.  The Blu-ray cover also infused a sense of nostalgia in me over a film that I practically grew up on because of my parents love for it, the Dolly Parton star vehicle 9 to 5.  So I guess you could call me Curious George, but I was determined to find out what Working Girl was really all about, hence this review. ‘Paddington’ Is The Cinematic Equivalent Of A Warm Hug (Movie Review)

paddington whysoblu thumbI am not sure whether or not I should be surprised by how much I enjoyed Paddington, the film adaptation of the popular children’s literature character created by Michael Bond, but I know without a doubt that I was absolutely charmed by it.  Co-writer/director Paul King, best known for his work on the British comedy series The Mighty Boosh, has put together a marvelous little film that has the kind of wonder that makes the film adaptations of certain Roald Dahl books, like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Matilda, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, work so well.  He even throws in the plotting of a film like Beethoven to make for a very easily accessible family film, with just enough plot to make this fish-out-of-water story very easy to watch.  So grab your coat & red hat and get ready for Paddington.

Eastwood Aims High With ‘American Sniper’ (Movie Review)

american sniper whysoblu 3So director Clint Eastwood decided to pull a Spielberg and be a double threat in 2014, but while Jersey Boys and American Sniper are no Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List (and perhaps not even a Lost World and Amistad), the latter film is certainly his best effort in some time.  That may not be saying much, but American Sniper, while not the most engaging war film in terms of having much to say, without adding a layer of schmaltz on top (fitting with the strong war violence presented), did interest me on another level.  Despite being an uncomplicated, yet never-dull and efficient war-drama, I was intrigued by seeing a filmmaker like Eastwood make an attempt at a film that studies masculinity, given his own career as a gruff, male action hero.

‘Blackhat’ AKA Sexy Hackers (Movie Review)

blackhat whysoblu thubmBlackhat is a slickly-produced techno-thriller from co-writer/director Michael Mann.  While Mann continually enjoy exploring the relationship between cops and crooks, this film and the last couple efforts from Mann (Miami Vice, Public Enemies) seem to feature same issue: personality vs. interest.  The fact is, all of Mann’s films have tons of personality, given his stylish tendencies, but his recent efforts have unfortunately not left us with much to connect with, beyond the visuals, committed (yet somewhat shallow) performances, and visceral quality of the action in his features.  Blackhat does nothing to really change that around and while a January release date is harsh sentencing for a director that continues to put what I imagine is tons of effort into his productions, it stands to reason that a film with a couple action-based highlights amidst a world filled with exotic locals, techno-jargon, and the handsomest hacker of them all could only draw up so much excitement.  That in mind, I am still a Mann fan and while bloated, I tend to enjoy the visual language Mann puts on the big screen, overweighing my need for a more enjoyable screenplay, which is still unfortunately the issue with these recent Mann projects.
