Kori’s Top 10 Films of 2014

Top 10Well another year has come and gone, leaving in its dust quite a year in Hollywood. We had the tragic and shocking deaths of Philip Seymour Hoffman and the beloved Robin Williams. Sony released, pulled and re-released the controversial film, The Interview, due to cyber threats and their systems getting hacked by North Korea. This move by Sony threw us all into a fury, making us as Americans wonder why we are negotiating with such a terrible person (Kim Jong Un). I am sure glad that Sony came to their senses because The Interview was HILARIOUS!! Continue reading ‘Kori’s Top 10 Films of 2014′

Love Is Strange (Blu-ray Review)

love is strangeI tend to enjoy seeing process be put on display in film.  A lot of times that applies to crime dramas or heist films, where you see the way things play out in a wordless manner, involving a lot of the inner workings of certain activities.  Love Is Strange, a film that is not remotely close to being a crime drama, puts process on display early on, as our two lead characters awaken and get ready for their wedding.  We watch them go through morning routines, leading up to their attempts to hail a cab. It does enough establish a sense of place, but more importantly, it allows us to watch two actors who seem incredibly comfortable in their roles.  That is how this film plays out for the most part, as we watch actors work very well together in a fairly low-key comedy-drama.  Now the film is on Blu-ray for many to see this comfortable film play out.

Look Who’s ‘Taken’ Now (Movie Review)

taken 3 whysoblu thumbMy favorite scene in A Walk Among the Tombstones, the previous Liam Neeson thriller that found the 62-year-old actor facing up against a number of deadly foes, involved Neeson’s character talking a knife-wielding man out of fighting, because they both knew how it would end.  It showed how much of an intimidating force Neeson can be just by having a conversation.  The same can be said for the first and best Taken.  While that film had its share of action, the best scenes involved Neeson intimidating his enemies through just his presence and dialogue.  Now we are at Taken 3, which is pretty much a joke.  Sloppy storytelling, incoherent direction, horrible action (featuring plenty of close-ups); this is a mess of a film.  Sure, Neeson knows how to sell his presence, but as the tagline states, I really hope it does end here.

BIG NEWS! The Ant-Man Teaser is Out!

Paul-Rudd-in-Ant-Man-Costume-EW-CoverWhether you were watching the premiere of Marvel’s Agent Carter or simply waiting for YouTube/Twitter/Facebook to explode with all this ANT-MAN stuff, it is now safe to think small and get a load of what Marvel has in store this July.  Ant-Man is coming and troubled behind-the-scenes business aside, many surely have enough faith in the studio that brought us talking trees and raccoons to go along with the effortlessly likable Paul Rudd, as he and Michael Douglas battle the preferably bald Corey Stoll in the next Marvel Studios adventure.  Sure, this is not the most iconic teaser I have ever scene for a Marvel film, but I am pleased enough with the emphasis on character and am curious what a movie like this about this kind of character can really do.  Check out the trailer for yourself and tell us what you think!

Reno 911!: The Complete Series (DVD Review)

reno 911 whysoblu coverI recall being a very young lad and watching MTV trying to figure out what ‘good’ music was, by chance I stayed up late enough to watch a group of young up and coming sketch comedy actors on the show, The State.  I had no real idea of what I was watching but I was riveted.  It was odd and I didn’t get all of the jokes, but I still laughed because I was that guy all the way back then. Eventually the show was cancelled, this was back before the internet and I had no idea why or where these young actors went.  I was upset but eventually time went on and I saw Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black pop up on their own new show Viva Variety on Comedy Central a number of years later. I was stoked!  I was older so I understood more of the jokes and I was just happy to see some talented and deserving comedians on TV again.  And like the The State, Viva Variety was cancelled.  A chubby, nerdy, and Latino Jr High school child cried out, “IS THERE NOTHING JUST IN THIS WORLD?!?!?!”  Luckily, there would be another chance for Lennon and company to bring me more comedic joy.  In 2003, Comedy Central premiered Reno 911! and it was a critically and commercially successful show, and most importantly, I got more than just a season or two of it.  It was created by three The State alums, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant.  While the show had 6 seasons, not all episodes were on the same level of hilarity, but they were all consistently funny.  Follow me and we go through each season together… Ladies and gentlemen, let’s visit Reno!
