Based on the acclaimed novel by Nick Hornby, A LONG WAY DOWN stars Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots as four strangers who happen to meet on the roof of a London building on New Year’s Eve each with the intent of committing suicide. Their plans for death in solitude are ruined, so they mutually agree to call off their plans for six weeks and form an unconventional, dysfunctional family. I’m trying real hard not to make a Breaking Bad joke. (takes deep breath)

We’re almost to Expendables 3! It comes out next week. Still 2 movies left for the ‘Countdown To Expendables 3‘ series. Today we focus on series mainstay, and one who’s action career started with a little pick me up by starring with Stallone in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren. Dolph was supposed to be the next big thing and was given some iconic roles to lead off his career. He was handed both He-Man and The Punisher (which in case you’re wondering why the choice today wasn’t this film, it IS available in Region B in two territories). But, aside from action junkies, I don’t think Dolph ever really took off as large as he was supposed to. However, Dolph never quit. From Rocky IV to the present, the guy has been doing pure action movies. Granted he’s gone from big theatrical releases, to minimal, to straight-to-video…but still working nonetheless. During his heyday I was never a big fan, but looking back, I’ve taken to the guy and have really enjoyed going back to his old films for another look. Writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait takes a radical departure from his recent string of black comedies(God Bless America, World’s Greatest Dad) to create a film that shows there are still surprises and shocks to be had in the found-footage genre pioneered by The Blair Witch Project. In her review inThe New York Times, Jeannette Catsoulis pointed out Goldthwait “engineers a static, almost wordless 19-minute shot inside a tent that generates more tension than many horror directors achieve with a swarm of Foley artists and a healthier budget. This canny exploitation of the power of silence is unnerving.” Tom Huddleston of Time Out London called the film “a whole lot of jarring, juddering fun.” Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com said, “It’s smaller in scope and horror ambition, which automatically makes it more enjoyable than most of its brethren, creating a mix of local color and camping disaster that’s basic but frightfully effective.” “WILLOW CREEK does everything a little bit better than others of its kind,” praised Scott Tobias of TheDissolve.com. There is a scene where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) seemed to reveal its true colors. It features William Fichtner’s villainous character dressed in all black, sporting an Under Armour top, and looking about as close as he can to producer Michael Bay, while explaining his nefarious plot that felt like a metaphor for blockbuster superhero movies. While standing in a very glossy and elaborately designed set, in the midst of fantastical CG creations, we hear about a dreaded disease that will be spread, only to have the same villains release a cure and make billions as a result. Having just been treated to Guardians of the Galaxy a week prior, TMNT feels like another emotionless superhero film produced by Hollywood, while a potentially huge money makers seek to reassure some faith in these studio blockbusters. That in mind, it is not that TMNT is all that bad, it just feels like a generic film rolling off an assembly line.

To start off, this is a review of the 2014 film Stage Fright and not the 1987 horror film that will be releasing on Blu-ray from Blue Underground this fall. When word first came to me about Stage Fright, I got pretty excited. A slasher film done as a musical! Oh hell yes. Seems like a devious Brandon Peters dream come true. This past Spring it was released wide on VOD where I was able to rent it. The film started off with a great big bang, but as it wore on, slowly just kind of drifted past the greatness of its first act. When Brian White (aka Blu-ray Jesus) offered this one up for review, I was eager to give this film a second shot with knowledge of knowing where it was leading this time. The first time’s mild disappointment may have been because it wasn’t the film “I” wanted it to be and with this second viewing I could accept it more for what they did give me. Dropping just after the weekend the new movie releases, you’ll be able to travel back in time and start from square one with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s inception of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was a Ninja Turtle maniac back in the late 80s and early 90s. This release got me pretty pumped as there’s not much in the way of video features or featurettes on aspects of this franchise. Plus, while I was a huge fan back in the day, I was so young as to not have really dug into the production or history of them. And in my older age, all I’d really done is brush through some Wikipedia stuff if I was curious. So, here it was the DEFINITIVE history on the heroes in a half shell. That’s a pretty profound statement to make. Continue reading ‘Turtle Power – The Definitive History Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (DVD Review)’

Network television’s best show of the last two years, Hannibal, is coming to Blu-ray. The show’s second season continued its mythology building based off the Thomas Harris novels and deepened its lore. Every frame, every breath of dialogue is so carefully constructed and it shows. This show is so good, they’re bringing in elements from Hannibal and Hannibal Rising, two of the weakest novel and film pieces of the collection, for season three and I am super eager to see what they do with them. Every performer on this show brings their A-game every episode. And I must say, Mads Mikkelsen has done the impossible in pulling himself up to that Anthony Hopkins Hannibal Lector pedestal that seemed too far of a climb for any performer. Details on the fantastic second season are below. Also, pre-order your copy today. Continue reading ‘HANNIBAL Serves Up Its Second Season Sept 16 On Blu-ray’

The Railway Man is based on the World War II memoir of Eric Lomax, who is our character of focus in the film. I found the film to look and feel a little like those “safe” movies due to its gloss, polished aesthetic. But with the power of its performers and events depicted in the film, it proves to be a bit more than that. For what it was, I thought it was an engaging and pretty strong film. I was surprised in my research afterward to see how many critics found it to be merely decent and judged it as primarily that “safe” film I thought I was getting, but wasn’t delivered. While based on a true story and a memoir, I really didn’t want to get into spoiler territories with the review, as I think not knowing what lied ahead, or how things resolved were better off a surprise when watching the film. The devastating horror of a nuclear apocalypse is now reality and nine desperate strangers find themselves clinging to life in a farmhouse cellar, while radioactive fallout descends on the darkened world above. These would-be survivors face the nightmare of dwindling supplies, poisonous air and the greatest threat of all – the hordes of zombie-like refugees who want in. With each dying day, their choice becomes clearer – stay and let the makeshift shelter become their tomb or face the unknown terrors of the world outside. Starring Edward Furlong, Monica Keena, Andre Royo and C.J. Thomason, AFTERMATH takes a hard look at how far humans will go to survive. And it isn’t pretty.

Michael King (Shane Johnson) doesn’t believe in God or The Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural. Michael decides to make himself the center of the experiment – allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him – in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go. Dale Dickey (
IRON MAN 3), Tomas Arana (
GLADIATOR), and Julie McNiven (
Mad Men) co-star in this intense supernatural spine-tingler from the producers of
WHITE NOISE and
THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT.

For me, Without Warning is one of the most exciting releases of 2014. No, its not Twin Peaks or Batman 1966 finally coming out, but its up there. Had I heard much about it before this release? No. I really dig the fact that Scream Factory has gotten this 34 year old film that’s never seen a home video release and are putting it out on Blu-ray and putting bonus material on it to boot. I’m all about film preservation and restoration. I’m not one who likes films to be forgotten no matter how bad they could be. Without Warning has pretty much been forgotten for a long time. How many people have been able to see this one since 1980? I’ve heard there have been bootlegs over the years, but the answer is not many. And of those, who remember it? Well, paint me with excitement as I finally got to see one of those truly “lost” films of horror yesteryear. Continue reading ‘Without Warning (Blu-ray Review)’
