I saw writer/director’s Ari Folman’s 2008 film Waltz with Bashir and was very intrigued by where he would go next. That film revolved around a character searching for his lost memories as an Israeli soldier and was made using unique animation techniques. Folman’s new film, The Congress, is similarly about finding one’s self in a sense, but it comes at this topic from a different angle. Based on a science fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem, The Congress follows a character through an allegorical world that depicts the extreme merging of the entertainment industry and technology in ways so complex that people literally become animated characters. This is a film that has too many ideas to fully make work, but thanks to a strong lead performance by Robin Wright, let alone the nature of the film, there is a lot to appreciate or dissect about what is seen in The Congress; aspects that I am still thinking about.

Firestorm is a film that interested me because of its star, Andy Lau. I’ve been a fan of the actor ever since I was introduced to the Infernal Affairs trilogy (Or, Hong Kong Departed for those of you who don’t know that series is). He’s an interesting performer and he’s been around for a long time and has a HUGE filmography. Seriously though, go look at it. To have gone back and researched all his films would be near impossible, but I have sought out some and if I see something that catches my eye and I notice he’s in it, it definitely gets my attention. Today, we’re focus on one of his more recent films, Firestorm. Continue reading ‘Firestorm (Blu-ray Review)’

From the director that brought audiences Sinister and Exorcism of Emily Rose comes the action-packed thriller DELIVER US FROM EVIL, debuting on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD Oct. 28 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. DELIVER US FROM EVIL is a chilling story inspired by the actual accounts of New York Police Department (NYPD) Sergeant Ralph Sarchie (played by Eric Bana, Lone Survivor), who teams up with “Father Mendoza” (played by Edgar Ramírez, Zero Dark Thirty) to investigate a series of strange events that are taking over and terrorizing their city. Olivia Munn (Magic Mike) co-stars as Sarchie’s wife and Joel McHale (“The Soup”) co-stars as Sarchie’s NYPD partner.

Dear journalists, We apologize for the unfortunate timing of our Sleepy Hollow Headless Day announcement. The tragic news of Steven Sotloff’s death hit the web as the email was being sent. Our deepest sympathies are with him and his family, and we don’t take the news lightly. Had we have known this information prior, we would have never released the alert and realize it’s in poor taste. Please accept our sincerest apologies.

In my early days I was a pretty big fan of BBC’s spy show The Avengers. No, I’m not even close to old enough to have seen it when it originally aired. When I was a kid they used to show reruns of it on A&E. I was at a spending the night at a friend’s when I was in Elementary school and his older sister was watching a marathon they were doing and we joined in and were hooked. You may ask why they are starting with Season 5 and not Season 1? Well, then you probably don’t know the history of the BBC’s old catalog. A lot of old episodes of their televisions series, like Doctor Who, have been lost forever because at one point they went to their vault and started recording over their backlog tapes of shows to save space and money. One of the few shows that survived this was Monty Python’s Flying Circus thanks to Terry Jones swooping in and purchasing every episode at the last minute. They are also likely starting at Season 5 because it was the first one in full color. And who can’t wait to see Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in full high definition gorgeousness? Here’s the details of the release from Lionsgate provided below! Continue reading ‘The Classic Spy Series, The Avengers: Season 5, Arrives On Blu-ray November 11 From Lionsgate Home Entertainment’

Last year, horror was abuzz with a word of this new zombie film called The Battery. It was a super low budget indie film ($6,000), but I didn’t really know much about it. All I had seen was a picture and a really cool poster (that is the flip side of the cover art on this release). I pretty much got to go in blind. And yeah, I was definitely on board with everyone singing it praises. But, who was going to release the film on home video? That was the big question. And as a huge welcomed surprise, it ended up being Scream Factory. I had definitely said when this was announced that without it even being release yet it was their best modern horror film release, and I’m sticking to that. Kurumi’s heart was broken by the sudden death of her boyfriend in a tragic airplane accident. Forced to carry on without her beloved Hal, she fell into a reclusive and joyless existence. Kurumi had given up on the world, but a brilliant scientist devised a plan to win her back. By melding futuristic technology with the binary equivalent of human emotion, they created an ultra-lifelike robotic surrogate to take Hal s place and lure Kurumi from her shroud of solitude. Resistant at first, this shattered beauty slowly yielded to her feelings of longing and took comfort in the company of a robot. Though their unique bond grew stronger with each passing day, Kurumi and Hal would soon discover that nothing about their artificial love story was quite as it seemed. Sometimes I find myself asking, “Why wasn’t this better?” Life of Crime has everything going for it. The film is a prequel of sorts to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, as both films feature three key characters. More specifically, crime novelist Elmore Leonard wrote both Rum Punch and The Switch, the novels both films are based on. Regardless, the film has interesting source material and circumstances going for it, as well as a great cast, most of Leonard’s dialogue still intact, and a nice period-film aesthetic to top it all off. Still, Life of Crime never manages to be anything more than average. It is unfortunate, but I have some thoughts as to why this may have been the case.

There’s a funny story about this movie review. Should I tell it to you? I wrestle back and forth of whether I should or shouldn’t because it has nothing to do with the film itself, but oh what the hell. I’m all for entertainment and having a good time. Many months ago my Irish dancing friend, Gregg Senko, was sending me the same text over and over all day long in like fifteen minute intervals or something close to that. It was real annoying because I was trying to focus at work. The text simply read “As Above, So Below.” Having never seen the trailer for this film I had no idea what he was talking about. It was going on about six o’clock or so when we had just sat down for dinner and upon the arrival of yet another text I finally couldn’t take it anymore and I texted back as politely as possible something to the effect that I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. He texted back and said it was a new movie. That was it! Continue reading ‘‘As Above, So Below’ Is Actually Pretty “Descent” (Movie Review)’

It’s a rare occurrence when a movie drops a trailer that looks incredible, has expectations set very high and then delivers. Captain America: The Winter Soldier did just that. The film also opted to be a Spring movie and in turn wound up being the highest grossing film domestically until just a week ago. Pretty impressive. Its also big enough to scare off Batman and Superman from competing head to head with the follow up. Personally, I was a big fan of the first Captain America film (It so happens to be my favorite pre-Avengers Phase I film) and was looking very forward to another Steve Rogers “solo” adventure. The film also featured one of my favorite Avengers coming back too, Black Widow. And then they were using The Winter Soldier storyline…just sounded too awesome to be true. The Katie Couric-produced and narrated documentary, Fed Up premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Later, it found release in theaters back in May during summer movie season. No, it didn’t finish in the Top 10 of summer films. It was widely praised by critics, with one even calling it the “Inconvenient Truth of the health movement”. The Weinstein Company bought the rights to it and are now bringing it to Blu-ray where hopefully more people will be able to become informed of what it has to offer. If you are interested in learning more about this hidden cause to obesity in America and some of what you can do to improve your health to prevent it, you can use the Amazon link to pre-order the film.
