Roger & Me, the highly acclaimed and groundbreaking hit film that launched Michael Moore’s career as a documentary filmmaker and a leading nationwide activist, debuts in a new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray™ edition, DVD and Digital HD on October 7 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Roger & Me is a highly original, personal and satire account of one of America’s greatest urban disasters told against the background of the tough times in Flint, Michigan, Moore’s hometown. The birthplace of General Motors, Flint had been economically decimated by, among other things, plant closings and the elimination of 30,000 GM jobs. In Roger & Me, Moore gives cinematic voice to his razor-sharp, compassionate and often wryly humorous perceptions of what went wrong in Flint, and chronicles his much-thwarted efforts to meet face-to-face with then-GM Chairman Roger Smith. Blending humor with scathing indictment, Roger & Me ignited a national discussion about the cruelties of corporate America and inspired other filmmakers to make films that would be seen by wider audiences.

I love this announcement as you’ll remember it appeared on my first wishlist. I’m a big fan of effects legend Stan Winston’s directorial debut. Its a terrific throwback monster/effects movie that is filled with suspense and kills. Its also got a great performance from Lance Henriksen. Pumpkinhead truly is a unique experience and one that I’ve been pining to have on Blu-ray. I would taken a barebones copy, but wow, I feel spoiled with Scream Factory getting it and treating it right. Its got a slew of all new bonus features and I just can’t wait to dig into it! Below you’ll find all the goodies and information about this release as well as a preorder link. Continue reading ‘PUMPKINHEAD Coming To Blu-ray In Awesome Scream Factory Fashion!’

“Welcome to Mayberry” is a phrase my good friend Clint’s stepfather tells me every time I come to visit in Seymour, Indiana. Mayberry has become synonymous with that comfy, cozy, charming lifestyle. And it all derived from The Andy Griffith Show. Its a show that was an iconic piece of American television and still plays through reruns to this day. You know you can whistle the theme song (which in itself is a whistle) like its second nature. I don’t know how familiar the youth of today is with the show, but for my generation and prior at least, its something that comes with your upbringing just like learning to ride a bike or something. I approached Open Grave completely blind, not knowing really what to expect aside from Sharlto Copley being in the movie. I didn’t really read the plot synopsis or look at the cast list or who directed it. I knew it was a horror movie based on the title and the box art, but that was about where my knowledge of the film ended. In essence, I think this sort of helped kind of get in with its set of characters as they were all trying to figure out who they were and why they were there. I knew just as much about them as they did. With this in play I think I was roped in a bit more for this film than had I read what likely described the entire first act on the synopsis. But where would it all lead, and would I stay just as invested for the entire run time. Well, that’s not something I’m gonna play my hand on in the first paragraph of the review, so keep on reading to see. Continue reading ‘Open Grave (Blu-ray Review)’

Eureka! Entertainment have revealed the full length theatrical trailer for the forthcoming theatrical & home video release of DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI. The film will be released theatrically in selected cinemas nationwide on 29 August 2014 which will be followed by a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of Eureka’s award-winning the Masters of Cinema Series on 29 September 2014. One of the most iconic masterpieces in cinema history, Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide and changed the direction of the art form. Now presented in a definitive restoration, the film’s chilling, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again. At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding…
*Please keep in mind that when the Blu-ray is released it will be Region LOCKED and will only play on Region Free Blu-ray players.

As it goes to start off, I was sort of in the dark regarding Blue Ruin back in 2013. It wasn’t until I started seeing actor AJ Bowen Tweeting such high praises for the film and its lead performer Macon Blair, that I became aware and intrigued. Upon looking the film up, I noticed it was the long awaited next film from the guy who did Murder Party. Murder Party was a little cult classic dark comedy that completely surprised me many moons ago. Blue Ruin was looking on the up and up for me. Finally it got a release on VOD where I was able to see it and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. As you can see from our ‘Top 3 of 2014 So Far’ lists we had compiled last week, I kinda liked it. Enough of that, lets get into the how and why I loved this movie so much. Olive Films newest rescue, Arch Of Triumph, is a 1948 film that comes as an adaptation from a book with the same name. The film’s original script featured much more ruthless violence, but the MPAA had all this stuff removed before the script was even to be shot. And originally it didn’t include a love story either, but that was added to make it have more commercial appear (leading to the original writer to call it quits). This aspect landed them a superstar in actress Ingrid Bergman. Arch Of Triumph wound up being remade or re-adapted in 1985. This time it was a BBC TV movie that had legendary Anthony Hopkins in the lead role.

Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd star in the laugh-out-loud comedy, They Came Together, arriving on Blu-ray Disc (plus Digital HD), DVD (plus Digital) and Digital HD September 2 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. I happened upon this film, realizing that David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) had made a new movie, only to discover how hilarious it was, let alone be confounded by how it was not given a bigger release, given its concept and the fact that it has a ton of comedic actors in it. I would be happy to call this one of the funnier/weirder films of the year and would recommend it to many. With all of that said, I am excited about this upcoming Blu-ray release, which seems to have a lot of worthwhile extra features. Find out more about this upcoming release by continuing on.

Confession. I missed out on Neighbors when it hit theaters a couple months ago. Just didn’t work out for me. But, I’m excited as ever to see it when it drops on Blu-ray in a few months. I have heard nothing but positive about it. I was also a member of the fraternity with which they are basing their jokes off of in college, so I’m excited to have some laughs at myself as well. Cohort Aaron Neuwirth reviewed and liked the movie quite a bit, so that has me looking forward to it too. Anyway, details below, this drops on Sept 23!
