Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (Blu-ray Review)

Never-Sleep-AgainI’m a big big fan and lover of the A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise.  I grew up with Freddy Krueger as well as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees.  Freddy became the absolute phenomenon of those guys though.  He was everywhere.  And he’s left an incredible legacy and a ton of fans.  Never Sleep Again chronicles the journey from his first film to Freddy Vs. Jason.  It even covers some memorabilia aspects and that TV show that’s not so fondly remembered, Freddy’s Nightmares.  This came out on DVD back in 2010 and 1428 mentioned there were no plans for a Blu-ray.  However, Image Entertainment has come to the rescue of us that live and die by the Blu and brought this documentary to the Blu-ray format! Comedy Bang Bang: The Complete First Season (DVD Review)

comedy bang bang whysoblu thumbI am a big fan of Comedy Bang Bang and the comedic sensibilities of its creator and star Scott Aukerman.  I have to follow that statement by saying Comedy Bang Bang can be very divisive, as it presents a type of absurdist humor that not everyone can go along with.  Yes, the show features a ton of funny people as guests, including Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Amy Poehler, and more, but the show captures a far stranger type of humor than many may be used to.  It definitely explains why this show is a great fit for IFC, rather than any basic cable channel.  Regardless, the entire first season is now available on DVD and it is full of plenty of crazy extras to go along with the bizarre nature that is this twisted talk show.

In The Heat Of The Night (Blu-ray Review)

In-The-Heat-Of-The-Night THUMB“They call me Mister Tibbs” is one of the most famous lines in cinema history.  It comes from the mouth of Sidney Poitier in the 1967 Best Picture winner In The Heat Of The Night (For the remainder of this review known as simply Heat).  A film that was an important moment not just for filmmaking, but a an important as an advocate of racial equality.  While making a big splash at the Academy Awards, the film also found success in the years after as it became a franchise.  Heat ended up serving as the first piece of a Virgil Tibbs trilogy that included the follow ups They Call Me MISTER Tibbs! (1970) and The Organization (1971).  Sidney Poitier reprised his role for both films.  It then became a television series of the same name that ran for 8 seasons from 1988-1995 over two networks (NBC ’88-’92, CBS ’92-’95).  In this era of being obsessed with franchises, I’m surprised we haven’t seen the reboot of Virgil Tibbs. SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE Drills Its Way To Blu-ray March 18!

Slumber-Party-MassacreAs you could probably predict, I’m very excited about this one.  This is one of the most notable “Golden Age” slasher films of the 1980s.  When doing your research on the era, this one is a pivotal movie to add to your watching.  Scream Factory had originally released the first 3 movies of this series in a Roger Corman box set of the franchise.  Here they’ve been able to find and develop a new HD print of the film that they once had not been able to do.  They’ve brought over the old bonus content and added a new interview to boot.  This is an exciting release, and I’m sure the film is going to look like never before on Blu-ray.  Its nice that like the Visiting Hours/Bad Dreams 2 pack coming in February, these Shout! Factory horror movies are able to cross over into the more appropriate Scream Factory catalog (They also retroactively consider the Shout! released Blu-ray of The Stepfather a Scream Factory title, too).  There are no plans right now to release part 2 and 3 of The Slumber Party Massacre series on Blu-ray, but if the sales of this one do well, then we can be sure that they would definitely start looking into it.  This one releases in March and you can find all the details and a preorder below! Aaron’s Most Anticipated Films of 2014 By Month

imageI was seeing a lot of lists regarding people’s most anticipated films of the year and I figured I would post one too.  Many directors, writers, and actors that I admire have films hitting theaters this year, so it was nice to dig into the upcoming release schedule of this year and really figure out what I am looking forward to.  The problem then became how to rank these films.  Given that I just struggled to put together a top ten list for 2013, I figured I would take a different approach with this list.  The following is a list of films I am looking forward to, separated out by month, with mentions of a few other films as well.  One must also keep in mind that I am going mostly by mainstream films with established release dates (that could potentially change).  With all of that out of the way, here we go:

Bullet In The Face – The Complete Series (DVD Review)

Bullet-In-The-FaceShout! Factory brings home the IFC series Bullet In The Face.  The show is another from the creator of Sledge Hammer!, Alan Spencer.  It had a 6 episode run on the network, airing all the episodes between 2 nights.  The show was shot in Canada and features Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard is special guest star role capacity.   It features a lot of outlandish comedy focusing on violence with a bit of a neo-noir tone.  While the show was short lived, it picked up notoriety from its DVD releases in other countries and now has a cult fanbase similar to the creators other works.  Its hitting shelves soon, so lets take a look at it. ‘Jack Ryan’: Plain Recruit (Movie Review)

jack ryan whysoblu thumb 2Does the world need another Jack Ryan?  The character, created by writer Tom Clancy, has never quite taken off, despite their now being five films that feature him.  The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger are solid spy thrillers/procedurals, but are not 90s films that many seem to single out all that often.  This sentiment was challenged in 2002 with The Sum of All Fears, the first reboot of the Jack Ryan character.  Despite receiving decent-to-positive reviews then, The Bourne Identity arrived around the same time, made around the same amount of money, but basically buried Ryan’s analyst ways, as audiences favored the kinetic spy action.  Now we have another take on the character in a new film that flirts with what audiences like in the Bourne films, but still tries to be a Clancy-style spy thriller.  The results are unfortunately very average.

Buckle Up With Cube, ‘Ride Along’ With Hart, Laugh Maybe (Movie Review)

ride along whysoblu thumbThere is not much work to be done when reviewing a film like Ride Along.  It is a comedy, so I cannot exactly say whether someone will laugh or not, as it is all subjective.  The film is a buddy cop movie, which follows a long list of mismatched pairings designed to work, based on chemistry and the potential comedy that comes with it.  Lastly, the film heavily relies on how much they enjoy a specific performer.  Basically, Ride Along is a completely inoffensive comedy that puts the spotlight on Kevin Hart.  Ice Cube is around to provide straight man support, but if you like Hart, this film may be mildly entertaining.  There is not much more to it than that, but hey, I can still dig into this film anyway and see if anything else important comes to light.
