I thought I would try something new here on the site with a hardware review since it’s not every day you make a simple run to Target for a baby shower gift and end up coming home some five-hundred seventeen dollars lighter with a new, hard-to-find PlayStation 4 in tow. I kind of felt the same guilty way I did when I came home with PlayStation 3 way back in 2006, except this time I didn’t buy it as an alternative for the lowest cost Blu-ray player. My oh my, a lot has changed in the past seven years. Seven years ago, I never dreamed I would be the owner and editor of one of the most established Blu-ray websites, nor that I would have all the opportunities I have been afforded because of this site. So in a way, I kind of owe my existence and accomplishments thus far in the entertainment industry to the magic of Blu-ray. If you want my honest opinion, there’s nothing better than a good old fashion revenge flick, especially with a strong female protagonist upping the ante. And the Bard once wrote: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Isn’t that the truth? LOL. Okay. I better shut my mouth before I stick my foot in it. On February 4, 2014, Anchor Bay Films will be releasing Scorned, a story guaranteed to make any man eternally faithful! Directed by Mark Jones, director and writer of the cult favorite Leprechaun series, Scorned will be available on both Blu-ray and DVD. It will also be available On Demand across select cable providers and for digital download across iTunes, Xbox and VUDU. And best of all, my favorite press person in the world gave me two Blu-ray copies to give away to 2 very lucky readers here on WSB. Read on below for more information about Scorned and how you can enter to win! Continue reading ‘Anchor Bay’s ‘Scorned’ Blu-ray Giveaway Contest!’

Here’s the last trailer I plan on posting for now. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a Super Bowl spot, but rather than post that, I went for the 4-minute extended trailer, which basically highlights that this big summer sequel is going to be all about Oscorp throwing everything they’ve got at Peter Parker. Will it work or will it be too crowded? I don’t know, but it is a new Spider-Man movie and he has a colorful rogues gallery, so it will at least be neat to see a few of them on screen, going after the web head. Continue on to check out this extended look at the upcoming film.

Continuing on with posts for all these big Super Bowl movie spots, we now have Noah, the latest from director Darren Aronofsky. I am not sure how “untold” the story of Noah may be, but Aronofsky making a biblical epic is enough for me. This teaser certainly puts plenty of emphasis on the impending doom for the world, while Russell Crowe’s Noah scrambles to protect his family, as well as, y’know, save all the animals via a giant ark. Should be something of a spectacle. Continue on to check out this mini trailer.

Not being much of a fan of all these “trailers for the trailers” that has become a “thing” these days, I was pretty happy to be looking forward to the first teaser for the new Transformers trailer of all things, during the Super Bowl, given how it didn’t resort to a “5-second look at the official spot” or any of that nonsense. Now that I have seen it, I can’t say I was disappointed. Transformers: Age of Extinction is the next stop for Michael “Boom Boom” Bay and while he has basically traded in the old cast for Mark Wahlberg and Dinobots, I cannot say I was expecting much more than what I got. This film may not win over many new fans of this big, explosion-filled franchise, but it will surely satisfy those who contribute to the colossal massive box office results, or at least give those that don’t like them, yet see the films anyway, plenty to talk about. Regardless, the spot from the big game is online now, continue to to check out the teaser.

After this trailer, I’m thinking this film looks like a lot of fun. We’re all Breaking Bad and Aaron Paul fans, so I’m sure that’s enough to get most of us to watch it. This film may fill that Fast & Furious void present this year. And if you dig car chases, this looks like one giant chase. I hear it features a lot of practical effects and tremendous stunt work. If it includes great filmmaking of said stunt work, then this could be quite the spectacle. Need For Speed hits theaters on March 14th. Zoom zoom ahead to watch the Super Bowl trailer!

Remember my wishlist article? Scratch this one off that list. The Scream Factory Collector’s Edition of Ginger Snaps is one of my most anticipated releases of the year. And its getting their full treatment. The Blu-ray won’t be here until July and the extras aren’t finalized yet, but today they dropped us a look at the key artwork for it. It comes from Joel Robinson who did the art on the Vincent Price box set last year. July can’t come soon enough as I’m really excited for this one. I’ve also included a look at key artwork recently announced for their upcoming Collector’s Editions of Dog Soldiers and Sleepaway Camp (Finally! Cannot wait!). Also noteworthy is they have announced that they will be adding Lake Placid and Hellhole to their “Summer of Fear” lineup. So if you’re a fan of these alternate designs like I am, keep scrolling to scope out these 3 art reveals. Night Of The Demons is a film that has been engrained in my consciousness ever since my very first viewing of it. I remember it quite clearly. That damn VHS box at the rental store was incredibly terrifying to me (see the thumb). I always wanted to rent it but backed off. Once the time came, I finally divulged. And holy crap, this movie spooked the crap out of me. It had some disturbing material that has haunted my brain since the first time I saw it. Plus it had this alluring sexual vibe to it that as a kid in the Midwest growing up Catholic always adds a dimension of horror because it seems kind of dirty like you shouldn’t be watching. It’s those early viewings and lasting effect that has made this film one of my favorite horror movies of all time. So imagine my delight when my favorite Blu-ray distributor got their hands on it. Joy! Continue reading ‘Night Of The Demons – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)’

The Golden Globe nominated (Best Actress in a Mini Series-Rebecca Ferguson, Best Mini-series or TV Movie) mini series The White Queen arrives on Blu-ray from Starz/Anchor Bay Home Entertainment. The series originally aired on the BBC in June 2013. It was followed by being acquired by the Starz network and aired there two months later in August. The series is work of historical fiction based on a popular book series. The BBC declined a further series and claimed it to be a one-shot, but Starz has stepped in and is developing another mini series, The White Princess which is also based on books in the series. This is definitely a title cashing in on the success of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, and those are big aspirations, but how does it stand in its own right? Well, keep reading and I’ll give you my two pennies. Continue reading ‘The White Queen (Blu-ray Review)’

It seemed pretty telling of the quality to me that a film by acclaimed director Jason Reitman would be practically swept under the rug, given its low profile release at the end of January, but I had a desire to see it anyway. I have been a fan of Reitman’s previous films (including Juno, Up In The Air, and Young Adult), so I was more or less pleased at the prospect of seeing another film from him. While I was not familiar with the novel by Joyce Maynard, which this film is based on, I could get behind a Jason Reitman film that stars Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet. Unfortunately, while these leads deliver fine work, as that generally comes with casting good actors, the film slipped away from being a poetic coming-of-age story and moved towards being a melodramatic piece of work, finding more in common with familiar Nicholas Sparks dramas.

A few days ago I was discussing the HBO series Entourage with some friends and going over how it began as a fairly entertaining series, but eventually amounted to some conflict that could be extinguished with the simple mantra of, “Vince and the gang are going to be alright.” The show mainly relied on the easy-going dude chemistry between the guys (and Jeremy Piven), as they lived lives of luxury in Hollywood. While the setting and premise are very different, That Awkward Moment had me thinking of Entourage quite a bit. This dude-focused romantic comedy has fairly low stakes, features a group of people who are all fairly successful and especially well-dressed, and it never seems like there is much going on to threaten their existence. I am not saying the world needed to be crashing down around them, but it is a fairly standard comedy that was rarely very funny and essentially amounted to the mantra of, “Zac Efron and the gang are going to be alright.”
