Pacific Rim (Blu-ray Review)

When my reviewer Gerard Iribe and Aaron Neuwirth (his Comic-Con 2012 coverage here and WonderCon 2013’s here) first brought Pacific Rim to my attention, I wasn’t sold on it at all.  The trailer and its crappy narration just felt way too generic for me and although the concept has never been done in this grand of scale on the big screen, I can’t help feeling like I’ve seen this all before in the countless hours of mecha and robot cartoons I used to watch as a kid.  We saw trailer after trailer these before the release of this while each one was an improvement, I had to admit…I still wasn’t sold the first time I sat down to watch this.  What was it about monsters from the Pacific Rim and giant man-made robots that had everyone‘s panties in a bunch that they were so excited over?  I hate to sound like a screeching teenager, but OMG!  This movie ended up being the BOMB!  So much so that I actually paid to go back…BIGGER and BETTER the second time around.  Oh yeah!  I went IMAX 3-D and my ears bled in ecstasy from the stomping of the robots feet on the hard pavement or the smashing of their fists into the jaws of the Kaijus. Lethal Ladies of Horror Interview: Night of the Comet’s Kelli Maroney and Catherine Mary Stewart

resize_image.phpI was given the chance to interview the two lead stars of the 1984 cult horror-comedy favorite, Night of the Comet.  Both Kelli Maroney and Catherine Mary Stewart were happy to answer a number of questions, leading up to the screening of the film in Los Angeles at the “Lethal Ladies of Horror Film Fest” on October 17th (details HERE), as well as the collector’s edition Blu-ray release of the film on November 19th (details HERE).  I should note that Kelli and Catherine will be at the horror fest and will be signing cool ‘Comet’ items and happy to take pictures with fans for a small fee.  For now though, read on to see what the ladies had to say about the film. IMPORTANT UPDATE: This Event Has Been Cancelled, which is incredibly unfortunate, but please still enjoy the interview.

Treme: The Complete Third Season Comes to Blu-ray November 19th!

tremeTwo years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Crescent City, crime and corruption are on the rise, and outsiders with their own agendas are starting to pour money into the city. In the third season of the critically-acclaimed HBO series Treme, the ordinary people of New Orleans must band together to demand that their music, art and well-being be protected against opposing institutions. For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city. However, little of what they can bring to bear yields a quick result, and nothing about New Orleans – its government, its police department and courtroom, its school system – works as it should. Nothing is easy. Continue reading ‘Treme: The Complete Third Season Comes to Blu-ray November 19th!’

Curse of Chucky (Blu-ray Review)

Curse-of-chucky-TNDespite having a broken wrist and all I literally did a cartwheel when I found out I was selected to review Curse of Chucky on Blu-ray.  I’m not sure why other than the fact that I chalk it up to my undying love for the serial killer doll.  He’s a relic and a byproduct from my youth.  I have many fond memories of the slashing Good Guys buddy doll.  Heck, I even remember buying a life-size replica of him at Spencer’s Gifts for my ex-girlfriend’s little brother, who was also infatuated with the character (now that one worries me a bit since he was only seven years old at the time and his mom let him watch Chucky on repeat).  So anyway, yes!  Thank you Sean and Jami Ferguson for allowing me to cover this thrilling direct-to-video sequel from Universal Pictures.  I hope to do you guys proud.  So let’s get stabbing! Steven Seagal, Ving Rhames & Danny Trejo Are A FORCE OF EXECUTION!

Force-Of-ExecutionAnchor Bay Films is bringing an all new action film pitting together Steven Seagal, Ving Rhames and Danny Trejo on December 17th.  This synopsis sounds all sorts of crazy.  Seagal is playing an old school mob boss and Danny Trejo the leader of a cartel.  The film seems like its going to follow martial arts superstar Bren Foster however.  I’m kinda hoping this film isn’t super serious, and goes all out to be as crazy as it possibly can.  Its probably really low budget and playing stuff very pulpy and over the top may just be the best way to go.  And if Seagal can ham and mug it up, even better.  More in depth details follow below. American Horror Story: Asylum – The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

American Horror Story Asylum TNAmerican Horror Story: Asylum is the second season of the wildly thrilling FX horror television series American Horror Story.  The interesting thing about this show is that it’s billed as an anthology.  That means none of the events we discussed here in the first season have any relevance at all here.  Odd huh?  I love it!  While some of the faces may be familiar (we’ll go over them in more detail below), the second season ushers in all new characters, locations and most importantly…a brand new storyline.  Think no one watches this show?  Think again!  This season alone garnered seventeen Primetime Emmy Award nominations, more than any other show.  Now I don’t know about you, but to me that’s quite a feat considering it’s one of the most eccentric and eclectic horror series you’ve ever seen on television.  Nothing is too taboo on this show.  Nothing! Lethal Ladies of Horror Triple Feature in LA on October 17th

Artwork page 2-001I should start by noting this is a location-specific event, as this awesome-looking horror event will be taking place at the Historic Regency Village Theater, in Los Angeles.  With that out of the way, this upcoming event is a themed horror marathon, the “Lethal Ladies of Horror”, featuring the films Night of the Comet, Christine, and the upcoming remake of Carrie.  This event is being brought to audiences by the same folks involved in putting together the “Evil Dead Fest” earlier this year, which screened all four Evil Dead films and was a ton of fun.  This means the films will have a lot of additional fun going on in between films and within the theater lobby as well, which includes Q&As with cast and crew from the films, prize giveaways, props from the film (such as a very specific car) and more!  I’ll note right now that I’ll be posting an interview from two of the stars of one of these films in the very near future, but for now, continue on to learn more about this exciting, upcoming event.  IMPORTANT UPDATE: This event has been cancelled.

BIG’s Wish Is Granted – 25th Anniversary Edition arrives on Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack This December

img1Given that Tom Hanks has a couple films coming out this fall, might as well put out one of his classics as well, so here we have the 25th Anniversary edition of Big on Blu-ray.  Big is one of those films that I love to watch, whenever I see it on somewhere.  It features a wonderful performance from Tom Hanks in the best of the bunch, as far as 80s ‘body-switching’ comedies are concerned (Always weird to know that was a big thing for that decade).  Big feels like one of those movies that almost anyone can enjoy in some way, even if they don’t love it, because the movie hits all the beats in just the right way to be a crowd-pleaser.  Learn more about this new Blu-ray release by continuing on.

The Exorcist – 40th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)

The-ExorcistI’ve been spoiled here lately at Why So Blu?  I’ve gotten to cover and write about all the Friday the 13th movies, Norman Bates, Halloween, Romero Zombies and John Carpenter films.  Now, oh…nothing real big, just THE FREAKIN’ EXORCIST!  Warner Bros is putting out another edition of one of horror’s greatest achievements and a masterpiece in filmmaking in time to celebrate its 40th anniversary.  Didn’t they just release something more than substantial not too long ago?  Yes.  What more could they have done to make this a “must have” release.  Well, sadly, the answer to that question is “not much”.  There was word from William Friedkin himself that there would be a new transfer of the film for an upcoming Blu-ray release that he said was even better than the amazing one already available.  However, this release does not carry said transfer.  It’s the exact same two discs they’ve given us before with new packaging.  If you read on, I’ll explain. Drug War (Blu-ray Review)

Drug-WarHong Kong cinema is the master at the crime thriller.  You can almost pick out a random one and find success.  You’ll at least be pleased with a great chase, shootout or suspenseful sequence of events.  There’s also some crafty camera work at play or some sort of inventive twist you’ve not seen done before.  Johnnie To’s Drug War is no different.  This film is a race against the clock that keeps you on your tows and thrills you with its action beats.  It’s a film that is surprisingly not very nice toward its protagonists and ends in a action sequence that makes you feel like you’re right in the middle of the events.  Well Go USA imports this one in the barest of bare forms, but is the film good enough to recommend on its own, without the enhancement of extras? ‘Gravity’, A 2013 Space Odyssey (Movie Review)

gravity whysoblu thumbGravity is an answer to what film can be all about.  It charts a journey for a character, while presenting it in a most spectacular fashion.  The amount of work that must have went into carefully crafting every aspect of this film, from the story to the tiniest visual detail that rears its head, is practically implausible for me to think about.  This is a film that took years to develop, film, and release, but is such a triumph in almost every way that the wait was most definitely worth it.  Every now and then there will be a film that I greatly anticipate for reasons beyond just expectation of an entertaining experience.  Gravity more than met that level of expectation.

‘Runner Runner’ Chicken Blunder (Movie Review)

runner runner whysoblu thumbRunner Runner is the kind of trashy B-movie that doesn’t aspires to build a whole lot of expectation for the viewer.  It simply wants to be seen as watchable.  The film is harmless in what it presents, but it is a shame that no one really seems to care how effective this film turned out overall.  It has a mix of good actors and good-looking locations, but the screenplay is so bland and paint-by-numbers that the sense of urgency in a film that literally has people hounded by crocodiles feels completely missing.  There is an interesting idea to explore in the world of online gambling and how they are run by offshore companies, but Runner Runner fails to find it.
