THIS IS THE END Comes to Blu-ray This October

This is the End TNOn October 1st, everyone will be able to pick up a copy of one of the funniest films of the year.  This Is The End is a comedy that I was very much looking forward to and it really delivered (Review HERE).  The film pits James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson against the end of the world, while allowing them to riff off of each other, as they play exaggerated versions of themselves.  It was a highly entertaining, very raunchy comedy, and it had just a bit of sweetness to really make it all work.  Now, audiences will be able to get the full experience, as the Blu-ray appears to be packed with bonus content.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

Pain & Gain (Blu-ray Review)

Pain & Gain is another one of those films in 2013 where try as I might, I just never made it to in the theater and therefore I have been waiting ever since its April theatrical release to check it out on the Blu-ray format.  Obviously, that day has finally come!  Hooray!  Thank you Paramount!  After hearing some encouraging things about the film and really digging the ultra-hyper, exaggeratively stylish and humorous vibe of the movie’s trailer, I’ve been dying to finally check this one out.  So before I pop this one into my trusty Sony Playstation 3 Blu-ray player, I wanted to take a brief moment to reflect on things here because after all, first and foremost, this is a Michael Bay film and it could go either way.  Thankfully I’m a devoted follower of the man, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make stinkers either (most notably the last two Transformers movies).  And this one is also based on a novel and coincidentally is Bay’s smallest budget project in awhile so I guess you can say there’s a lot riding on the success of this one.  Now I don’t know what to expect, but if it’s anything like the film’s trailer, I’m exceptionally optimistic about things. ‘Elysium’ Heads To The End Of The Earth To Weigh Its Script Against Its Visuals (Movie Review)

elysium whysoblu thumbThere has been a fair share of original science fiction films hitting theaters in the past year; many of which depicting earth in a dystopian setting.  Films like Looper and Oblivion show earth at various levels of despair, while also finding a way to provide beauty in the aftermath of a planet overcome by destruction.  In his follow up effort to the smash success that was District 9, writer/director Neill Blomkamp has come up with his own take on a futuristic earth ravaged by society and the answer that humans have developed.  This is all combined with an action plot about a man trying to save himself, only to be drawn into the things that make up the political and sociological themes of the film.  Given all of the visual splendor to behold in the film, whether or not Elysium is a success as strong as District 9 is entirely dependent the script, which has an issue with rushing through a lot of development and not providing enough smarts in the dialogue to go along with the eye candy.

‘We’re The Millers’ And The Audience May Laugh (Movie Review)

we're the millers whysoblu thumbWhile I have seen plenty of raunchy comedies (This Is The End, The To Do List) and ones that skew towards the darker side (The World’s End, The Hangover: Part III), let alone perfectly safe comedies (The Internship) this year, I can’t say there have been too many pure wacky comedies.  I guess The Heat was pure wacky comedy, but I had more fun with We’re The Millers.  It is always tough to grade comedies, especially the sillier ones, but for whatever reason, even in spite of the clear issues, We’re The Millers did enough to make me enjoy my time, while watching the film.  As I dive in, maybe it will become clearer as to why.

The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts: Complete Collection is coming to DVD!

deanLong before Comedy Central began generating ratings and headlines with their over-the-top roasts, one entertainment icon was pioneering the format with “The Dean Martin Show.” In 1973, the 10-year-old NBC variety show retooled in its final season and introduced a new feature: the “Man of the Week Celebrity Roast.” Patterned after the roasts held at the New York City’s famous Friars Club, Dean Martin’s Roasts quickly became a favorite with television audiences and eventually evolved to become a network series, “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts.” And beginning with a skewering of comedy legend Bob Hope on October 31, 1974, the program would go on to become a fixture on NBC for the next 11 years.  Featuring all 54 roasts from both “The Dean Martin Show” and “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts,” the program’s notable roastees included many of the 20th century’s most accomplished performers and athletes, politicians and personalities (complete list below), including: Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis Jr., Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, George Burns, Don Rickles, Kirk Douglas, Danny Thomas, Gabe Kaplan, Hank Aaron, Wilt Chamberlin, Joe Namath, Muhammad Ali, Ronald Reagan and Dean Martin himself.  Continue reading ‘The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts: Complete Collection is coming to DVD!’

The Great CBS / Time Warner Debacle

cbs squareIt was to my dismay in recent days when I was home for lunch and found a black screen when I turned on Showtime. It wasn’t that moment that provided the maligned surprise as I’ll occasionally get the same black screen when I turn on ESPN at times. This is usually corrected by waiting a minute or so, or going to another channel, then flipping back, except this time, flipping back did not provide the desired effect. Instead, I was introduced to this message of doom…

Woody Allen and ‘Blue Jasmine’ Head To San Francisco (Movie Review)

blue jasmine whysoblu poster-001There a few main thoughts I have in regards to the latest…scratch that, this year’s Woody Allen film, Blue Jasmine.  First off, Cate Blanchett is one of the actresses that immediately come to mind when I consider who are among the best working today.  This film contains one of her best performances.  Secondly, here is a great example of Allen coming into one of his peaks again, as he tends to go up and down in terms of his current outcrop of films.  And lastly, Blue Jasmine is very different from a majority of Allen’s other films, which is an interesting quality unto itself.  For a man who has been consistently releasing films for the past 40 years, Blue Jasmine moves away from a certain mold and embraces reality in a way that Allen has only explored so often.

FRANKENSTEIN’S ARMY Marches Its Way To Blu-ray September 10th!

Frankensteins-ArmyThis should be a ghoulish treat.  This faux history monster mash up apparently mixes regular film making with the popular found footage gimmick.  Karel Roden stars as a Nazi scientist carrying out Hitler’s last desperate attempt to win World War II.  He goes through the annals of Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s journals to replicate his process of creating the famous monster.  With this he uses the bodies of dead German soldiers to create an army.  If the makeup and effect work is good, this should prove to be a real “creature feature” type treat.  The film has already been screened to some pretty good and credible claim.  We’ll see if Why So Blu? agrees and can add to that when it releases September 10th!  Preorder Below!
