2 Guns is a lot of things, but calling it ‘good’ is something I am having trouble trying to do. Given that the film is based on a comic series, which I assume is very pulpy and full of dark humor, I could give it the benefit of the doubt that it is supposed to feel like light fun, with the occasional amount of gritty menace. At the same time, the fact that this big budget film, with A-list stars, feels just as much like a 2-hour series premiere of a new show on TNT called “Trench & Stig”, does not exactly have me deeming this film as one to race out and see. 2 Guns revels in plot twists, characters threatening each other, wavering allegiances, and plenty of gun fights. It is not all that original and more convoluted than clever, but star chemistry can go a long way.

Super Storm, formerly known as Mega Cyclone, is yet another exploitative Saturday night SyFy Channel movie. These usually feature vaguely familiar faces, over the top concepts and some good unintentional and sometimes “in on the joke, too” laughs. There’s an audience for these. Likely those making the choice to watch it are well aware of what they’re in store for. Those fooled by a cool box or just perusing to be curious are usually left ticked. Either way, as long as there’s an audience, you keep turning them out. Luckily, I’m of the type that every now and then one of these movies can hit the spot if I’m looking for some goofy fun. When it comes to teenager-focused comedy dramas, based around high school life, I tend to look at Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything as my favorite of that bunch. The Spectacular Now is a film adaptation of an acclaimed novel by Tim Tharp and it has come very close to giving me the same vibe that I really love about Say Anything. There is a familiar story here, joining the leagues of other coming-of-age films (a sub-genre I have seen a lot of this year), but I had a different sort of experience while watching this film. It is not necessarily that I could relate to certain characters, but the effort taken to make the film relatable was very well done. There are comedic moments that work well, but the dramatic moments really hit hard, and the film is stronger for being so sincere in its presentation.

1980-1983 is known as the “Golden Age” of the slasher film. This horror subgenre got so popular there was almost a new one every week in theaters. Slashers were cheap to make and brought in big returns. Some studios built up and became something because of these films. However many studios crashed and burned. A lot of these films were lost or forgotten due to studios going out of business. One of those studios was the well known Cannon films. Scream Factory has gone in and saved 2 of these early slasher films that have never even had a DVD release. X-Ray and Schizoid are making their first appearance in the home video market since VHS. Being a fan of slashers and never having seen either, I was excited to dig in to this release! Continue reading ‘X-Ray/Schizoid Double Feature (Blu-ray Review)’

Drinking Buddies is a step forward in the film world for writer/director Joe Swanberg, who has specialized in making films of the mumblecore variety. To catch some up on what that term means, the concept of mumblecore revolves around independent films that are very low budget, largely improvised by the performers (generally amateur actors), and shot in very naturalistic ways, including lighting and real world-locations. Swanberg’s latest feature is the largest in scale, as it involves several well-known actors and a clearer structure that is somewhat familiar, but still working off what the cast brings to the material most of all. As a result, Drinking Buddies feels somewhat slight, overall, but the quality of the performances (one in particular) is enough to make it a solid watch. Setting a lot of action around a craft brewery does not exactly hurt either.

Any franchise can be resurrected nowadays. In 1990, New Line Cinema released House Party which wound up being a surprise hit that spawned now 4 sequels. These films were party comedies, focusing on a thin main plot with the main characters while having multiple goofy side characters with little arcs as well. You’ve seen this type of film aped before and maybe it was House Party that brought it to the forefront. The first 2 sequels were hits as well and meant to be a finished trilogy. In 2000, a direct-to-video sequel brought back the franchise for a one off. Now, Warner’s Premiere label has decided to reboot this franchise for the modern generation. Back in 2011, fans of the popular video game series Mortal Kombat were treated to a brand new way of experiencing the series and various characters through the means of a pretty solid web series (which I covered HERE). Mortal Kombat Legacy was a much grittier portrayal of the world of Mortal Kombat, with an emphasis on applying a real world quality to the series, despite involving fantastical elements, such as the god of thunder, Raiden. Regardless, the web series was a hit at the time, but has only slowly leaked out information regarding the new season. Well, there was a panel at San Diego Comic Con this year, which was a great way to reintroduce audiences to the series. While a trailer was released a few months ago, fans got a new look at this upcoming season, as well as some information in regards to how things are going to change for the better. Continue on to learn more about this panel, check out some photos, and take a look at the latest trailer.
