‘Harry Potter’ 8: Live and Let Die

So finally, after a decade’s worth of film, we have now reached the end of the Harry Potter movie franchise (minus potential spin-offs or whatever).  This is a pretty major event as far as large film series go.  Never has a major motion picture series managed to maintain all of the key actors for every major role as well as maintain a consistent level of quality all the way through.  While some of the films are better than others, this is a rare feat to have seen be accomplished.  Now, with the series finally coming to a close, one can only hope to relish in how aptly this film series manages to wrap itself up.  This is certainly one of the best made films of the franchise, when accounting for several aspects such as the look of the film, the use of special effects, the acting, and for the most part, the film’s narrative drive to the finish. So Long, Harry Potter

Ten years ago, it was easy to be skeptical of the Harry Potter movie franchise.  The prepubescent leading characters were completely new to the world of filming despite being amongst some of the UK’s greatest actors and actresses like Alan Rickman, Jason Isaacs, and Maggie Smith.  Not only were they wet behind the ears but sadly, how could one expect this large group of very young actors to imbue the strong characters they would need to become?  There were even some that considered the franchise “easy money” – expecting effortless blockbusters given the books’ world-wide phenomena. Season of the Witch (Blu-ray Review)

I was recently disappointed in Nicolas Cage after viewing Drive Angry.  That combined with a growing history of dissatisfying films like Ghost Rider made me think that Nicolas Cage just doesn’t turn down movie roles anymore.  This makes me sad to say because I’ve been a fan of Cage for a long time.  When I received Season of the Witch I was hoping to be blown away, and that it would be so good that I would owe Nicolas Cage an apology for doubting him.  After all, I am one of the few people that enjoyed The Wicker Man, so I’m always hopeful that his movies may turn out to be good.  Was this another disappointment, or was this movie actually good?  Read on to find out… Continue reading ‘Season of the Witch (Blu-ray Review)’

I Saw The Devil (Blu-Ray Review)

There are a lot of revenge films that currently exist out there.  While I am always up for a sweet revenge tale, it does excite me much more when it is a film coming out of South Korea.  Over the course of the past decade, South Korea has continued to prove to me that some of the best, stylish, and most ambitious films are coming out of that area.  Now I have gotten a chance to see one of the latest treats from South Korea, I Saw the Devil, which is a wonderfully bloody, but stylized, revenge film.  This is a film that warps the idea of a cat-and-mouse thriller and benefits heavily based on the way this film handles familiar aspects of this sub-genre. Damnation Alley (Blu-ray Review)

In Damnation Alley the world is devastated by a nuclear holocaust, causing the Earth to tilt on its axis and bringing vast meteorological chaos.  As the weather stabilizes, mutated insects start to emerge, preying on the survivors.  The surviving crew at a U.S. Air Force bomb shelter in the Mojave Desert picks up radio signals coming from Albany.  The commander, Major Eugene Denton (George Peppard, The A-Team), unveils two armored vehicles he has constructed and announces a plan to cross “Damnation Alley,” the hundred-mile-wide strip between areas of radiation hazard, to join the survivors.  They set off, taking on two civilians — a novice singer they find in the ruins of Las Vegas and a wild teenager (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) — along the way.  The journey is also beset by giant mutated cockroaches, storms and crazed survivalists, making for some hair-raising escapes in this post-apocalyptic thriller.  Originally released in theaters in 1977 from 20th Century Fox, Damnation Alley has been out-of-print on VHS for several years, so I’m sure many are anticipating its debut on DVD and Blu-ray. A long time ago, in a former lumber yard far far away (actually 1980 in Venice, Calif.), Roger Corman gathered together a fledgling team of filmmakers to make one of the best low-budget science fiction films of all time, Battle Beyond the Stars, a space opera that managed to playfully borrow from Star Wars and The Magnificent Seven, to come up with an enduring cult classic. Long out of print, Battle Beyond the Stars has been meticulously restored with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer (1.85:1) from the internegative, boasting a new 5.1 DTS Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray, and featuring a galaxy of extras, including commentary by writer John Sayles and Roger Corman; a new interview with actor Richard Thomas; a behind-the-scenes technical featurette and much more.  Continue reading ‘Battle Beyond the Stars (Blu-ray Review)’

Rob And Steve Have A Lot Of Fun On ‘The Trip’

There are a lot of very good past and present actor/director teams and actor/actor teams.  While it is easy to acknowledge examples such as Scorsese and De Niro or Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, more obscure ones, such as Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg are equally great pairings.  The subject of this review, The Trip, is very obscure (at least for American audiences), as it reteams director Michael Winterbottom with actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.  The three have previously worked together on two very good films, 24 Hour Party People and Tristam Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story.  Their latest collaboration, The Trip serves as a humorous, and at times hilarious, look at two actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves as they go on a road trip through North England, acting as the perfect foils for each other.
