I love my French cinema and Cinema Libre Studio has brought Betty Blue to the Blu-ray format. I must warn you that this is the original 116 minute theatrical version and not the 185 minute director’s cut that played in a few art house theaters not that long ago which I missed. Hopefully people can get on the bandwagon and discover Betty Blue for the first time on Blu-ray since it does hit themes that many of us can relate to and others that we never will. The trailers have all made the film seem like a dark comedy, but there’s more to it than that. There is plenty of explicit sex to go around for those that are so inclined along with some intense drama. If you’re up to the adventure then keep reading. Before I get to explaining (in more words than I have to) that if you laughed at the first film, then (minus the originality) you’ll probably enjoy this one, I want to list some of the alternate sequel titles that my friends and I came up with for The Hangover Part II: Hangovers, 2 Drunk 2 Hungover, Hangover 2: Hung Harder, and Hangover 2: Bangkok Dangerous. With that out of the way, let me just say that I really enjoyed the first Hangover. I built it up in my mind to be something amazing before it was released in the summer of 2009, and somehow the film delivered. Very funny, quotable, and rewatchable, not to mention quite cinematic and well made from a filmmaker’s standpoint. With this new film, I did not try to build it up as much. The first film seemed to come out of nowhere, but surprised audiences with an original premise as a mystery comedy of sorts, while I only expected more of the same from its sequel. The BBC has produced another nature program, and if it’s anything like its predecessors, it should be good. However, let me start off straight away by saying this is not the animated movie of the same title. This Madagascar is as real as it gets, and coming from the BBC, offers yet another high quality presentation of nature in all its glory, as this time, we head to the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean where a certain island resides, called Madagascar.

This newest installment of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series finally brings Mortal Kombat fans two of the most recognizable and favorite characters of the franchise. Scorpion and Sub Zero make their debut appearances in this episode. Not attempting to work in a gritty sort of setting, matching up with some of the other episodes, the setting for this episode is more in line with the spirit of a martial arts film. It is spoken completely in Japanese with English subtitles, focused more around developing Scorpion’s character as a husband and father, with a touch of his skills in combat portrayed as well. This is very much an episode about setting things up for the second part, as Sub-Zero only arrives at the end, to initiate a fight that is sure to be something special. Still, this is another well made, solid entry to the very watchable Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. So enjoy the episode here: Continue reading ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy – Ep. 7: Scorpion and Sub Zero (Part 1)’

Okay…Let me start by saying two things: I liked this movie even more than the first one, and I sincerely forgive Jack Black for Gulliver’s Travels, Year One and Shark Tale (I know a guy’s gotta make a living, but c’mon!) after seeing, or rather, hearing his performance in the new Kung Fu Panda 2 movie, KFP2, as I will now refer to it. KFP2 is a lot of fun for young and old alike. The preview audience I was in attendance with this past Saturday was really into the movie, and for a very good reason. Let’s find out why. My boy is all over the place nowadays! You see, I discovered him. Yep. That’s right. I discovered Bradley Cooper. I remember telling my wife when we used to watch Alias that Bradley Cooper was going to be a big star one day. She didn’t believe me. I’m always right. Remember that. LOL. Anyway, here’s a movie I missed in the theaters, but not for long. The action-packed thrills are Limitless on Blu-ray this July 19th. The Blu-ray features the theatrical and unrated cut, an alternate ending and more. Check out the short press release below from Twentieth Century Fox and pre-order yours now! Recently, Director DJ Caruso was kind enough to to spend a couple of hours answering questions about his new movie I Am Number Four. He not only answered questions about that move but also discussed other projects like the long delayed Y: The Last Man and whether or not that will ever happen and if he is still involved with that. Caruso also shares his thoughts about working in the science fiction medium and also talks about his upcoming plans and what he is currently looking forward to.

Cartoon Network has released Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle on DVD for your viewing pleasure. This is a 2 disc DVD set containing 10 episodes of the insanely popular kids television show. I should post this disclaimer: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle is actually PART 2 of the first season. I say that, because nowhere on the package will you find that information. This is somewhat of a blunder, because viewers will start off at episode eleven and will wonder what happened in episodes 1-10. This set contains episodes 11-20, so we’ll have to work with what we’ve got. Let’s get to it. Continue reading ‘Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle (DVD Review)’

I got into the television show True Blood much the same way I do with most everything else in my life. I’m a sucker for brilliant marketing. I’m a salesman’s wet dream I think you get the picture. Although I’m a huge fan of vampire lore, it was the seductive lips dripping with blood on the cover art of True Blood Season 1 that were responsible for me blind buying it. I knew a little bit about the show and it’s onscreen sexual energy and eroticism, but it was ultimately a drawing that did me in. If that’s not brilliant marketing, then I’m not sure what to call it. Naturally, I fell in love with the show. How could I not? Vampires and sexy sirens make the perfect ingredient for my late night premium cable viewing. So I guess it goes without saying, I jumped at the chance to review The Complete Third Season Blu-ray set of the HBO hit series. And that’s why we are all here. Let’s get it started! Will Ferrell headlining a limited release comedic drama is not the sort of film that is going to stir a ton of interest from audiences that are happy with seeing him be loud and boisterous, but that does not mean the film should be overlooked. Ferrell is very good in a role that does not require most of his usual strengths. I do not find it surprising, as most comedic actors are usually very talented when it comes to drama. As far as the film goes, it is a bit of a slow burn and it falls into some of the trappings of these types of arthouse theater films, but it tells a good story. While it does hit a number of comedic beats, this is a drama about a man who has stumbled many times in his life and is finally finding some clarity. When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they decide to get out of town and quickly board a south-bound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest and homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect… until they meet an unlucky in love singer (Marilyn Monroe) who makes them both want to break their cover. This madcap farce was nominated for six Academy Awards and was later voted the Greatest American Comedy Film of All Time by the American Film Institute in 2000. The film did win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy and Marilyn Monroe won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy, and Jack Lemmon won as well for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy.

MGM through 20th Century Fox is releasing a series of films that have been repackaged into their version of a digibook. The Terminator is one of these films. On the heels of its 30th anniversary The Terminator has been given this digibook treatment, but what else is packaged with the Blu-ray? Is it a special edition, does it come with the fabled restored print that Lowry Digital (rumored) completed some time back? All of these questions and more will be answered as you take a trip with us back to 1984 and see where it all began. We’re also really happy to be bringing this Terminator review to masses in general for the first time. It’s a been quite a few years since it debuted on Blu-ray. Enjoy! As if it were not cool enough to be having westerns entering successfully back into theaters, the chance to see new samurai films made with the technology of today is equally exciting. Better yet is the fact that I can appreciate a film that has clearly been inspired by samurai films of the past, notably the work of Akira Kurosawa, which manage to practically apply the type of mood and pacing appropriate for such a film. Furthermore, add a fantastic action sequence that lasts nearly a third of the film’s running time. Legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike is certainly no slouch when it comes to filmmaking, and while he may be more known in the U.S. for his cult status as an ultra-violent horror/action film director, his talents easily serve him well here in creating an old fashioned samurai story, using modern sensibilities.
