Sense And Sensibility (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
On October 12, Sony released the Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 2. The set is a follow up to their now out of print and very well received first volume that found many legendary and important films of all types and genres from different eras featuring notable filmmakers and big star turns in the history of Columbia Pictures together on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for the very first time. These sets receive immaculate care in terms of restoration and come in fantastic packaging complete with a hardcover mini coffee table book with added essay and high quality photos (You can find my detailed look at the packaging by clicking HERE). The second volume picks up on the greatness that set left off on and includes the films Anatomy of a Murder, Oliver!, Taxi Driver, Stripes, Sense and Sensibility and The Social Network. Warner Archive Collection released a sweet lot of horror titles back in October. While late to the game on reviewing them, the review copies weren’t sent out til later on. In the current climate of home video physical media distributing, there have been many a fulfilment center delay on titles each and every month. So that’s not too surprising at the end of the day. Nonetheless, still very exciting with what they chose to put out last month. Val Lewton is a producer that Warner Archive typically dips into his catalog. They have paired up The Ghost Ship and the Boris Karloff starring Bedlam for release. This is its first time for both of them on Blu-ray with a new 2021 1080p master from a 4K scan of the original nitrate negative, lossless audio and a commentary for Bedlam. Another holiday season, another brand new Lord Of The Rings box set home video release. Last year saw both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies debut on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. This year, the Midde-Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition arrives with an upgrade in packaging, some physical swag and a new bonus disc. Standard Blu-rays and digital copy codes are included again. Each film now features its own case and slip cover, housed all together in a magnetically sealed box that shifts into different shapes for different options with which to store on a shelf and display. Originally slated for release on October 26th, the set is now releasing on November 16th. This review does include an unboxing video with my thorough look at the packaging on the set, which is the primary difference from the release that came out last year. Eye of the Devil caught my eye in this lot with its director and a cast that boasts Donald Pleasence, David Niven, David Hemmings and the feature film debut of Sharon Tate. This is its first time on Blu-ray with a new 2021 1080p master, lossless audio and a trailer. Sitting in Lionsgate’s catalog vault for many years has been a Steve Martin gem in that of the wacky and silly L.A. Story. Fortunately, it just turned 30 years old, has been given an HD master and released in other territories and makes for a nice easy Blu-ray release. This 30th Anniversary release comes with a nice load of features that are both old and new and make for very nice content. There’s also a new 5.1 mix for which to hear it by. If you’ve never seen it before and/or are familiar with the Los Angeles lifestyle no matter the era, you should really consider checking it out. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has been through space and time for six seasons now and counting. Figuring itself out after its second season, then thriving for a few years as the best Arrowverse show, Legends has sort of found its comfort zone in being able to sleepwalk through some of its best stuff while still putting out a quality program. Its seventh season is currently airing but you can pick up the Sixth season on Blu-ray now (Was released on November 9th) which features 5.1 audio and a nice array of extras made up of deleted scenes and featurettes. Disney is back at it in turning their rides into blockbuster films with Jungle Cruise, starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. The film brings to life the jungle adventure while getting fed rapid dad jokes boat excursion from their theme park. It wound up being one of the biggest global hits of the summer and appears to be getting a sequel even. The film will be hitting the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format on November 16th. You’ll be able to enjoy it with Atmos sound and a host of extras that take you behind the scenes and also give you a load of deleted scenes. 20th Century Studios’ historical epic,
Likely due to the upcoming follow up/reboot series as well as the advent of HBO Max and the desire to have HD masters for the series to display on the streaming app, Sex and the City is finally finding itself a Blu-ray upgrade. Warner Bros will be releasing the entire original run of the show plus the two feature films together in one set; Sex And The City: The Complete Series + 2 Movie Collection. This is the first time the show will be on the Blu-ray format and with lossless audio. It appears the extras from the DVD editions of the show will be carried over and the discs for the theatrical release films are the exact same as was released before on Blu-ray. This deluxe package is coming at a solid time for people to revisit, catch up or check out before the new series drops or to make for a great holiday gift for that Sex and the City fan (Who also still enjoys collecting physical media). Spencer stars Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana Frances Spencer. Yes, THAT Diana. Fans of Netflix’s award-winning series, The Crown, will no doubt remember Lady Di having a blast at Buckingham Palace, jamming with her Walkman on roller skates. Pablo Larrain’s indirect follow-up to Jackie, another film about an extremely privileged white woman from another era, is about as far from the good times of that roller skating scene as one can get. More a gothic descent into madness than the fairy tale of the royal family, think Black Sawn, and you’re in the right ballpark. No amount of KFC buckets can hide Diana’s psychological torment on a three-day Christmas getaway at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, in 1991. As a horror fan, a lot of this is right in my wheelhouse. I wonder, though, how such a claustrophobic tale saddled with intentionally unflattering photography will play for anyone expecting a tasteful costume drama.
