Well, on Monday morning, we hit the skies flying to Las Vegas to prepare to cover the 2011 Oscars. It doesn’t seem possible that this will be our third year covering the Oscars. Again this year, I am permitted to cover the progress of the Red Carpet until Saturday night, but after that, I have to hang up my video camera. Tomorrow, we’ll post another video story with clips from the co-hosts of this year’s Oscar telecast, Anne Hathaway and James Franco. Tomorrow night, we’ll make our first visit to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Shorts! screening and reception. Continue reading ‘On Our Way to the Oscars!’

I’m not a big sports fan, but when it comes to Robert Rodriguez and his many projects, that’s a totally different story. Nike and Robert Rodriguez present Kobe Bryant (yes, Kobe Bryant) in The Black Mamba. I initially found out about this when our very own Aaron Neuwirth sent me the teaser trailer a couple of months ago. I thought it looked great then and think it looks great now. This is the full length short film of The Black Mamba which clocks in at a little over five minutes. Check it out and enjoy! Continue reading ‘Robert Rodriguez Presents “The Black Mamba”’

Before I begin, I wanted to give a big shout out to my main man, Gregg Senko, who is recovering from some pretty invasive shoulder surgery last week. Gregg was originally supposed to review this title, but due to his current status of not being able to operate heavy machinery, the torch was passed onto me. I hope I make you proud Gregg. You see, in many ways, I hold Gregg personally responsible for discovering The Walking Dead, in my life. During Comic-Con 2010, he excitedly texted me that he had just met Robert Kirkman and that he gave our original screenplay to him. Continue reading ‘The Walking Dead: First Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Sometimes you can tell a lot from how good a comedy can be simply by the names of your main characters. Standard, ho-hum comedies may go for simplicity with names like John or Jane without mention of a last name. Other comedies like to have fun with all of the details, like this film for example. It is not enough that Cedar Rapids has people named Tim Lippe and Dean Ziegler; it has to go farther and make sure we know all the nicknames their friends give to them and repeat them enough that we find them to be memorable. Continue reading ‘‘Cedar Rapids’ Is Charming and “Super Awesome!”’

I suppose it can be construed that Director Todd Phillips took on this project to give himself some much needed distance from his previous surprise hit (The Hangover) before tackling his next project, The Hangover 2 (currently in production). I could completely understand if this was true and in all honesty, I would not blame him a bit before doing so. However, maybe he was forced to take this on. But really, who cares? What it all comes down to is the big question of whether or not his outing was successful? Continue reading ‘Due Date (Blu-ray Review)’

I have an embarrassing confession to make: I have not seen Twilight. I know, I know, but hey, I can’t catch everything right? So keep your laughter down for a second. While I may not have seen those movies, I am familiar with the details, so see if this sounds familiar; a desirable, teenage male with angst issues and supernatural powers risks his very existence in order to be with a girl he sees as his true love. As this story has already been told successfully, there is only one obvious way to make it better – add Michael Bay as a producer. Continue reading ‘Hi, ‘I Am Number Four’ and I Have Problems’

Thelma and Louise celebrates its 20th Anniversary with this release and it still resonates with a lot of people to this day. The movie became something of an anthem for female empowerment and triggered many discussions and disagreements once released. The concept of two women becoming fugitives due to poor judgement and circumstances was radical at the time.

Unknown is the type of film that works very easily as a source of entertainment…when you try not to apply much logic to it. It is perfectly serviceable, mainly due to Liam Neeson, who has a screen presence that can elevate any B-movie (Taken, Darkman), and because of the film’s solid production values. However, once the things that are unknown in this movie become “known,” I found the film to be less interesting and the plot became sillier as it went along. I missed this movie in the theaters so I was glad to be given the chance to review this movie since I thought the previews looked cute. Life As We Know It stars Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl and it’s the typical romantic comedy that we’ve all seen a hundred times. I was curious to see if this one would be any different than the usual ones and I’m happy to say that this was really well done!

Eddie Griffin is back in an all new full feature length comedy DVD entitled Eddie Griffin: You Can Tell ‘Em I Said It from Paramount Pictures and Comedy Central. It’s been several years since Eddie Griffin had a comedy special. Eddie is a busy guy in between touring and being in movies. I was elated when I was asked to review this title, because it had been a long while since I had seen some stand up comedy from a familiar face. How did You Can Tell ‘Em I Said It stack up? Read on and find out. Continue reading ‘Eddie Griffin: You Can Tell ‘Em I Said It (DVD Review)’

Up until recently I didn’t know anything about Unknown, but when I saw the movie’s trailer on television, a few weeks back, I instantly took notice. Why? Because… A) Liam Neeson stars in it… and B) Liam Neeson is shown in a bada$$ role much like he portrayed in Taken. And so, with only one short viewing of the trailer I was like where do I sign up for this trip at. Continue reading ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the ‘Unknown’’

It’s been over fifteen years since Judge Dredd graced the big screen and brought Sylvester Stallone’s career to a screeching halt. Up to that point, Judge Dredd was Stallone’s biggest film in terms of scope and budget and it bombed hard in the U.S. Was it really that bad? It all depends on who you ask. There’s currently a remake-reboot in the works starring Karl Urban and written by Alex Garland (Sunshine and Never Let Me Go). Dredd is hot property once again.

I believe that there have been three major productions of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. The first one was with David Niven which was followed by this mini-series with Pierce Brosnan, and finally the Disney version with Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan. This three part mini-series shared the earlier entries stunt casting of various stars (mainly from television) to play small supporting parts. For those of you that don’t know, Beauty & the Briefcase is an ABC Family Original Movie and it stars former Disney star Hillary Duff, who I am generally not a fan of. I have a really hard time believing Hillary Duff is an adult in anything she does – but that’s slightly off topic. Continue reading ‘Beauty & The Briefcase (Blu-Ray Review)’
