Back in 2014, The LEGO Movie took cinema-going audiences by surprise and by storm as it charmed and endeared everyone. It was the one of the first things to prop up Chris Pratt toward the superstardom he’d garner that following summer with Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel as the lovable space-idiot hot shot Star Lord. This movie launched a LEGO brand of theatrical releases to hot and cold successes with LEGO Batman Movie and LEGO Ninjago that hit and missed financially. Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of 11 years in the making, which spawned some 21 shared universe films before it. It seems like so long ago, but really it has only been a decade and minus only a few lowlights the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has continued to fire on all proverbial cylinders. Despite my love for the DC Comics Expanded Universe (DCEU) even they can’t say the same as MCU’s lucky lightning did not strike twice in their shared universe. I blame the critics and studio on that, but I digress. There will be no more talk of the DCEU, but instead we’re going to focus here on out solely on the MCU and the conclusion of the third phase of the film franchise. Phase 1 ended with 2012’s The Avengers and Phase 2 concluded with the first Ant–Man. And now we’re gathered here to wrap up a bombastic Phase 3 that gave us a whopping 9 entries so far: Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp and most recently Captain Marvel. As is usually the case towards the end of any year, Destroyer is a film that got caught in the middle of a pile of 2018 movies all hoping to receive awards consideration. The Annapurna Pictures release was one of a few to underperform as a result, though it did garner a Golden Globe nomination for star Nicole Kidman. Regardless, the film is a solid gritty crime drama, and it is worth a look. Between the strong cast and the very visceral feel of the film, there’s a lot to latch onto for a movie that shows just how strong something can come across thanks to technical effort, even if the story plays into some familiar concepts.

A couple of years before this Criterion Collection release of Police Story and Police Story 2, international martial arts star Jackie Chan received an honorary Academy Award for the impact he has had on cinema. Having been in the business for over 50 years, it’s only right to some of this older and most famous films get the deluxe treatment. It further helps to cement Chan’s cinematic contributions into history, which is pretty great when you can see a couple of gritty (and occasionally quite funny) martial arts flicks sit on the same shelves as classic Hitchcock or Bergman features. Whatever the case may be, read on to hear more about what this release for two entries in Chan’s classic Police Story series has to offer.

Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy play three journalists caught up in the 1979 Nicaraguan revolution in Under Fire. Russel Price (Nolte) is a gutsy photo-journalist who gets caught between his love for reporter Claire Stryder (Cassidy) and his friendship with her husband, Alex Grazier (Hackman). Caught up in the war between the Nicaraguan government and the Sandinista rebels, Price loses sight of his objectivity and becomes deeply involved in the skirmish. With cinematography by the great John Alcott (2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon) and one of Jerry Goldsmith s greatest scores (later sampled in Quentin Tarantino s Django Unchained), Under Fire is director Roger Spottiswoode’s greatest filmmaking achievement, a complex political thriller with shades of Casablanca, and Eureka Classics is proud to present the film in its UK debut on Blu-ray. German filmmaker Arnold Fanck made this beautifully photographed Bergfilm, or mountain film , in 1926. Written in three days and nights especially for Leni Riefenstahl The Holy Mountain took over a year to film in the Alps with an entourage of expert skiers and climbers. Ostensibly a love triangle romance between Riefenstahl s young dancer and the two explorers she encounters Fanck relishes the glorious Alpine landscape by filming death-defying climbing, avalanche dodging, and frenetic downhill ski racing. Alien is a title I have been waiting for on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for some time now. Ever since we got Prometheus and Alien: Covenant last year I felt we got shortchanged with no Alien release. But alas, they were strategizing. It’s the 40th Anniversary of the film. There was um a purpose for the film’s delay on the 4K disc format. Alright, I’ll let that fly then. What it really all boils down to is the fact that I’m ecstatic not only to have this movie in 4K now, but also to be among the first in the US with an advance review. I’ll do my best to do this one justice and give it some love, but truth be told it really doesn’t need much TLC from me. It’s a science fiction masterpiece after all. I could just easily give the feature a 5-doggie score and move along to the audio and video sections, which you’re all here for anyway. However, I won’t be that reviewer who simply does an unboxing or says the movie is good. I’ll give you a little bit of expose. It has become something of a joke to see new cinematic takes on characters such as King Arthur and Robin Hood, and yet studios keep trying and failing to set up new franchises around them. Now, along comes Joe Cornish, director of 2011’s brilliant Attack the Block, with a vision for a kid-centric take on Arthurian legend, and it’s the best interpretation of the property in decades. The Kid Who Would Be King has the spirit and ambition needed to work as a proper film for a young adult audience that adults can also appreciate as well. It did about as bad as expected at the box office, which is a shame, but now families can discover the film at home on Blu-ray.

When the summer heats up this July, the Criterion Collection will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Spike Lee’s 1989 masterpiece Do the Right Thing with a definitive director-approved edition, featuring a new 4K restoration. Jane Fonda gives one of the most electrifying performances of her career as a sex worker in peril in Alan J. Pakula’s Klute, appearing on Blu-ray for the first time. Agnieszka Holland’s Europa Europa, a breathless adventure story set amid the chaos of World War II, will appear in a new 2K restoration. Michael Radford’s 1984 stars John Hurt and Richard Burton in the definitive screen adaptation of George Orwell’s prophetic novel, appearing in a new restoration approved by cinematographer Roger Deakins. Marcel Pagnol’s enchanting comedy The Baker’s Wife, featuring the legendary actor Raimu in a new 4K restoration. And that’s not all: Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s career-crowning BRD Trilogy — The Marriage of Maria Braun, Veronika Voss, and Lola — will return to the Collection on Blu-ray.
