Magdalene asylums or “laundries” were originally designed by Christian Churches in Britain and the Unites States as a place to assist “fallen women.” In Ireland, these laundries came under the Catholic Church, and before long, there were over a dozen, spread out. These places soon became a ghoulish prison for these women, being put to work in harsh environments, abused both physically and emotionally. These places housed prostitutes, women who were pregnant out of wedlock (or through sexual abuse), and orphans. From the beginning in 1922 to the end in 1996, it is though that around 10,000 women were housed there in Ireland under the whip of the nuns. Those who left often had no idea who they were nor where to find any sort of family. It is within these walls that Aislinn Clarke sets her found footage film The Devil’s Doorway.

Amy Schumer scored herself a nice little hit before the summer season snapped open and turn the competition to dust with I Feel Pretty. Consider me a fan of the comedian’s cinematic output thus far. I was a huge fan of Trainwreck and while it was pretty average, I didn’t mind Snatched last summer. I Feel Pretty seemed to stir up controversy merely based on its trailer, but I guess I’m a jerk because I thought it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun. Plus, knowing Schumer, it probably wasn’t going to be exactly what the surface was telling us. Universal is bringing the comedy to home video on July 17th, skipping 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray and just settling for a standard Blu-ray combo pack. If you’re looking to check it out or a fan ready to snatch it up, you can order yourself a copy from the Amazon link at the bottom following the review. Wes Anderson has built a filmography full of work that could never be mistaken for another filmmaker, and he’s managed to take ambitious chances as well. That said, Isle of Dogs feels like a notable departure from Anderson’s comfort zone. Beyond being another stop-motion animated effort, the use of Japanese culture and a healthy dose of political commentary provide the film with a larger scope. What could have been a simple animated delight focused on the story of a boy and his dog becomes much more layered. Now the film is available on Blu-ray for all to see.

Scream Factory continues its roll out of new John Carpenter Blu-rays with his 1994 film In The Mouth Of Madness. This one is getting the coveted Collector’s Edition treatment, featuring plenty of new extras to stack the disc. Previously, the Warner Bros release only had a commentary track (Ported over here to this release). So Scream has whipped their normal magic into effect. Many consider In The Mouth Of Madness to be Carpenter’s last good or great film. Of course he’d go on to make some more films before taking a little hiatus and then pretty much enjoying retirement. This twisted bit of terror is a welcome addition to the Collector’s Edition series and the Scream Factory John Carpenter canon. You’ll be able to pick this one up on July 24th (Along with Memoirs of an Invisible Man), so be sure to pre-order a copy from the Amazon link below.
