Now that everyone has put together their Top Ten lists for the films of 2017, I thought it would be fun to assemble a list that combines all those results and determines a Top Ten list for the team as a whole. Usually, we just speak of which films is the Why So Blu film of the year in the comments section, but since we had the combined efforts of myself, Brian, Brandon, Bron, Gerard, Gregg, Jason, and Jordan, it seemed like a fun idea. To do this, I set up a reasonably standard points system. Choices on individual lists for number one would receive 10 points; number 2 would earn 9 points, 3 gets 8 points, and so on. One exception is, of course, Jordan’s list, as he only listed his number one film and didn’t rank the others. As a result, each of his picks, aside from his number one, counted for 5 points each. I hope that makes sense and while there is no commentary to go with each of these entries, please enjoy the Why So Blu crew’s favorite films of 2017.

I wish I could be cool and say I love Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT. The truth is I’d be lying. Not only did I never read it but nor have I ever seen the 1990 network television miniseries either. I know. I suck. It goes unsaid that I lived a very sheltered childhood up in Cleveland, Ohio. Thank goodness I left there five years ago and grew into the responsible young adult you all know and love now. Ha! So let’s fast forward some 30 years here since the book first came out and now IT receives a modernized (so to speak as still set in the nostalgia of the 80’s) adaption on the big screen. It’s actually part of something bigger too as this American Rated-R horror film is just the first installment of a planned two parts. Truth be told you had me at Rated-R. Let’s take a closer look down below at what IT (also known as IT: Part 1 – The Loser’s Club) is all about. Join me down below and you’ll float too.

Wow, with just two weeks until release date, here’s our breakdown of the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray releases of Cloverfield and its stealthy sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane from Paramount Home Entertainment. There is another film in the series on the horizon this year, but these are being released to mark the ten year anniversary of the original film (Which, was released on my birthday back in 2008). In short, the first film is getting a visual uptick and the second one is getting both video and audio upgrades. Their original releases look to be intact with all the bonus features. It’ll be interesting to see how the first one turns out to be honest, considering the intentional source of the video used for the film. Blade Runner 2049 opened in the fall of 2017 to critical raves. However, the whole way along, many were concerned with the almost three hour runtime coupled with an R rating. The film also was the sequel to one of the biggest cult favorites of all time, but a notable box office bomb as well. And, like father like daughter (hehe), the film had a very low opening weekend leading to a box office disappointment. Had the film not cost 150 million, maybe it doesn’t hurt so much. This was a split juncture, with Warner Bros only being able to rake in the domestic take and Sony handling the overseas. As such, we are in the US and I’ll be here reviewing the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of the film from Warner Bros. They wow’d me last year with their presentation of the original, so I’m hoping for more of that here in this picture. You’ll be able to compliment the 5 cuts of the original film on Blu-ray with just this one theatrical version on January 23rd. Continue reading ‘Blade Runner 2049 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

It’s practically unfair how good Paddington 2 is when considering other movies. Seriously, there’s no reason the first Paddington should have been great, let alone have a sequel that tops it, and now other films coming this year will have to compete with hopes to have the same genuine level of quality. This is the rare family film treat that can work for everyone due to how enjoyable the comedy is, how sweet the film is, and just how well it puts in a message without drowning it out thanks to the terrific work from all the actors involved. If that praise seems excessive, so be it, but Paddington 2 is exceedingly good at being a charming, fun film that also finds a way to matter in today’s age.

Here’s a title that was both fitting of either the Shout! Factory branded line of Shout Select or Scream Factory: Joe Dante’s Matinee. Ultimately it went to that of the Shout Select line. A loving homage to the kitchy creature-features of the atomic age, the delightful comedy Matinee is a smart and sharp period comedy that captures of joy of growing up on cheesy b-movies. Shout Factory have put their work in here, loading it up with a bunch of new interviews and other bonus features. Unfortunately no John Goodman here, but hell, probably a stretch to get him anyway. Joining Hell Night, this is another highly requested and jam packed release full of brand new features specific to Shout Factory. You can preorder now to have your copy ready to go January 16th. They saved the best for last, that’s why I’m last. It was a great year for movies and a shame that I couldn’t include more than what’s already included, but my Top 10, give or take, of 2017 is a nice and hearty list. A fellow reviewer from a different website used a cool word for his list when I noticed that he had a particular film one would not consider for traditional Top 10 year-end accolades. “Iconoclastic.” I am taking that word and using it for my list. Some of the films on my list are on there just for the sheer enjoyment I had in viewing them – not necessarily for their cinematic merits. Enough with the pleasantries – step right up and enjoy the show! Continue reading ‘Gerard’s “They Saved the Best for Last” Top 10 Films of 2017′

Just when movie going audiences thought it was finally safe to go back into The Further. Surprise! It is NOT! I bet you never saw a fourth Insidious film coming, did you? Given the low budget and success of the first three this was actually a no-brainer. I wish there were more surefire guarantees like this in life. I’d be a rich man, but I digress. Insidious: The Last Key is yes the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise, but if you’re going by chronology of the in-story timelines this is actually second in order. Confused yet? Don’t be! You just need to refresh up a bit down below before venturing into The Further blindly. Come on! I’ll show you around here. Kicking off this year of films released by The Criterion Collection we have John Hughes iconic high school film The Breakfast Club. The acclaimed coming-of-age comedy-drama primarily works as a chamber drama that happens to be deconstructing various high school clichés and has been held up high by audiences from all over. Taking this story of high school students stuck in Saturday detention and turning it into a beloved modern classic speaks to what a particular generation responded to. Even if one is not a fan, I believe it’s easy to see why the film has been given its share of praise and has even been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culturally significant. With this new Blu-ray release, fans can see the film looking and sounding better than ever, along with plenty of new and never-before-seen extra material.
