Forgotten Friday Flick – “The Couch Trip”

With such heavy, deep and dark fare taking over recent past picture selections (go Cronenberg!), its time to lighten up the rest of the summer with a few lessor known comedies starting today – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  This time out we’re jumping into the mix with a few movie oddballs for a farcical film that enlists the traditional mistaken identity plotline, but uses it to maximum comedic potential.  Seems a high profile psychiatrist and his practice is in need of a temporary replacement and who better than an alleged insane man to fill the void.  Brilliant wackos, cheating lawyers, hot doctors and jelly doughnuts without the jelly make up the merry mayhem of…The Couch Trip!

Enjoyable Times In The Ensemble Human Comedy ‘Person To Person’ (Movie Review)

Here’s a breezy little indie movie that gets by on the abilities of its ensemble cast. Person to Person takes place over the course of one day in New York. It finds little, if any, connections between the characters we meet, but is entertaining nonetheless. The film has an unassuming style, some bits of character-based comedy and a level of soul that suggests writer/director Dustin Guy Defa could move on from here to something that stuns audiences in the future. There’s a level of assured filmmaking here, and it all starts with his friend Bene.

Wakefield (Blu-ray Review)

When it comes to certain actors, there are some you’ll just watch no matter what the hell they do. Bryan Cranston is one of those few who are worth it just for their name involvement. I think post-Breaking Bad, many are now in agreement with that. Shout! Factory has managed to partner up with IFC Films and land a little independent drama starring the master thespian. Its called Wakefield and has him opposite Jennifer Garner.  She’s someone I really like, but I know she’s hit and miss with many people. The film has an intriguing premise and will be available to own on Blu-ray August 1st. Shout! Factory had originally announced it was August 22nd, but you benefit and its available much sooner. You can take a gander at the review and scroll on down to the very bottom if you’re interested in pre-ordering it to add to your collection. Continue reading ‘Wakefield (Blu-ray Review)’

Kino Lorber Opens Mohamed Diab’s CLASH

Kino Lorber is proud to announce the New York theatrical release of Mohamed Diab’s CLASH, a “breathtaking” and “ferociously well-made film” (Benjamin Lee, The Guardian) set entirely within the confines of a police van in Cairo, Egypt, two years after the Arab Spring. An official selection at Cannes, London, Cairo, and Palm Springs film festivals, among others, CLASH will open at New York’s Village East Cinema on Friday, August 25, 2017, before a national rollout during the fall.

‘Atomic Blonde’ Is A Cool Killer With Too Much Filler (Movie Review)

Here’s an action film that I couldn’t help but be underwhelmed by, given its potential. Atomic Blonde features Charlize Theron as a top-level spy in an action movie from David Leitch, co-director of John Wick. The film oozes with style (neon glow and an 80s new wave soundtrack) and features an array of solid actors in the supporting cast. There’s even one action sequence that will go down as one of the best action moments in recent years. Still, outside of a couple of action scenes, the film fails to engage in many ways.

Slither – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

James Gunn is forever going to be known as the man who brought us Guardians of the Galaxy.  Though, like Peter Jackson before he was the Lord of the Rings guy, he got his start in low rent horror. For Gunn, his roots trace back to none other than the schlockiest of schlock, Troma. And the best thing? The guy has neither forgotten, nor is he ashamed of his roots. He continually grows and keeps that badge of honor with him. In 2006, he got his shot at his feature film directorial debut in that of Slither, coming off being the writer of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake.  Slither originally made it to the HD-DVD format, but never crossed over to Blu-ray in the US (A few other countries have edition from many years ago). Proving worth the wait, its become a Scream Factory Collector’s Edition that you can snag on August 1st, which you can pre-order using the link below. Comic-Con 2017: Netflix’s Stranger Things Hall H Panel

Saturday brought us wonderful Marvel and Warner Bros. Hall H panels covered in detail here and here, but perhaps my third most favorite one was Netflix’s Stranger Things.  If you’re unfamiliar with the show and you’re my age, it’s your childhood!  It’s a pop culture phenomenon.  In this Hall H panel we were treated to an in-depth discussion of the series, the journey to Season 2 and never-before-seen footage of what’s to come this October.  They replayed the latter twice as the crowd erupted in wild roar both times.  We even had a surprise guest take the microphone for a question to the onstage cast.  Justice for Barb was also finally served.  New faces in Season 2 include Paul Reiser.  The rest of the cast, young and old, is just as likable in person as their onscreen counterparts on the show are.  Now all I want to know is where’s the Season 1 Blu-ray release?  Ha ha.  Check out all our exclusive photos of the Hall H panel down below. Comic-Con 2017: HBO’s Westworld Hall H Panel

HBO’s Westworld concluded its critically acclaimed first season this past December and is currently in production filming things for season 2. The series-created, executive produced, and written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin, based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name.   Saturday’s Hall H cast panelists included Ben Barnes as Logan, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal as Armistice, Ed Harris as the Man in Black, Luke Hemsworth as Stubbs, James Marsden as Teddy, Thandie Newton as Maeve, Simon Quarterman as Lee Sizemore, Rodrigo Santoro as Hector, Angela Sarafyan as Clementine, Jimmi Simpson as William, Tessa Thompson as Charlotte Hale, Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores, Shannon Woodward as Elsie and Jeffrey Wright as Bernard.  The panel was moderated by internationally renowned vocal artist/beatboxer/musician/comedian Reggie Watts.

Warlock Collection (Blu-ray Review)

First Vestron Video restored the entire Wishmaster series and put it on Blu-ray, now they’re doing such with the Warlock trilogy. A lot of horror fans were first introduced to actor Julian Sands this way. The 1989 film and its sequels always seemed to be a staple sitting on the ma and pa video store shelves. Personally, I had never seen any of them until now, but I can recall perfectly the boxes for them, seeing Julian Sands’ evil gaze daring you to rent the movie to see what kind of mystical horrors he could provide. I love when I get to rectify those rentals I never made in my youth via reviews for Vestron and other companies of similar ilk. You can pick yourself up the two disc collection or pre-order now to have it in time for its debut release on July 2th on Blu-ray.  Continue reading ‘Warlock Collection (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Brigsby Bear’ Is Full Of Quirky Heart (Movie Review)

How much do you love your favorite TV show? That’s just one of the questions asked in Brigsby Bear, a quirky comedy co-written by and starring Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney. Here is a film that sets up a strange premise, twists our perception and finds a way to make it all feel oh so earnest. There is a very subdued sense of humor here that goes along with the familiar indie vibe, but a level of drama that plays well into this film’s story. There’s a nice journey to watch here, and it comes with the establishment of a children’s show that calls to mind nostalgic love for what 80s entertainment for adolescents had to offer.

Why So Blu Crew Recaps Comic-Con with Out Now with Aaron and Abe Podcast

I don’t often post episodes of Out Now with Aaron and Abe, the podcast I co-host weekly, but this was a special event. Given that a few members of the Why So Blu crew were at Comic-Con this year, it seemed right to record an episode where we could gather everyone’s thoughts about this year’s convention. So I was joined by Brian White, Jordan Grout, and Bron Anderson, along with my lovely girlfriend, Ana Bosch, as we dove into a discussion concerning the various panels, footage and more seen in sunny San Diego this year. In this episode, you’ll find us all talking about Marvel, Warner Brothers, Ready Player One, Stranger Things, Kingsman, The Walking Dead, Westworld, Gifted, Laika and so much more. Despite recording late at night, after a long day, we all had a lot of fun going over our experiences, despite being tired. So please listen in and enjoy.

Comic-Con 2017: Marvel’s Hall H Panel

Marvel Comic-Con 2017 Hall HI’m a tad biased since I’m completely smitten by the DCEU movie universe as evident over here, but that doesn’t mean I have blinders on either.  Marvel’s Hall H Comic-Con panel may not have been as energetic, technology embracing or even as fun as the presentation put on by Warner Bros. that same day, but it’s ultimately the quality of the trailers on display that count.  That much I cannot dispute as Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War all look incredible.  So rather than splitting this panel out into three separate posts, which it easily could be, I want to cover them in order below as they happened on the Hall H stage in front of the captive 6,000 plus patrons in attendance.  We waited all day to see this footage and I don’t think anyone left that Hall H with the slightest look of disappointment on their faces.  Come on!  I’ll show you around! The Acclaimed Comedy-Drama The Big Sick Comes To Blu-ray This September

Based on the real-life love story between star and cowriter Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley,” Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) and his wife, The Big Sick arrives on Digital HD September 5 and on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital HD), DVD and On Demand September 19 from Lionsgate. Produced by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Bridesmaids) and Barry Mendel (Trainwreck, Bridesmaids), the winner of the 2017 SXSW Film Festival Audience Award is Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh with a 97% critic score. Comic-Con 2017: Basking In The After Glow Of Hall H’s Justice League

Justice League Hall H Comic-Con 2017I’d be lying if I said the Justice League Hall H presentation wasn’t my most anticipated panel of Comic-Con 2017, because it so is!  I didn’t even mind that much when Disney recently said Star Wars would be absent this year.  Whatever!  As long as Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher were sitting front and center in front of the captive audience of 6,000 plus with me in attendance that’s all that truly matters.  Honestly, I never thought I would ever say that before either.  Up until last year Star Wars has been my life, but not anymore.  There’s a 6-member elite team (yes I said 6) that stole my heart and has commanded my undivided attention ever since last year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  That’s the film that kicked all of this off within me.  The majority of critics didn’t get it, but every time I sit down with it (19 times now), Batman v Superman just keeps getting better and better.  I know what you’re thinking.  I’m crazy right?  Well I probably am, but I have yet to be diagnosed as so.  Therefore, I am not!
