Prometheus (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
With the release of Alien: Covenant on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray, its predecessor Prometheus easily lent itself to piggy backing with it on release date. A pretty simple upgrade for the 2012 Ridley Scott film. A film at odds with its audience, I find Prometheus a film I’m always eager and happy to revisit for another look. I’d like to thank Brian for ponying this one over to me, as he was originally going to cover this one, but things fell the way they did and he offered it to me. Last year, of all the Arrow-verse superhero shows, Supergirl was the highest rated in its inaugural season. But, unlike the others, it was on boring old dull CBS which pulls in the biggest network ratings. While great for the DC shows, it was poor for CBS. Plus it was an interesting show, so of course they had to pull it. Luckily, it took a little bit, but it logically found its right home on the CW where it became their second highest rated show. Unfortunately, since production moved to Canada, it had to jettison one of its strengths in Calista Flockhart. But, better to have the show with minimum contributions from her than no show at all. Supergirl’s second season comes to Blu-ray on August 22nd and you can pre-order this nice little set by clicking the Amazon link following this review. 
The Cabin in the Woods is one of those films that proves you should never judge any book by its cover or so to speak. This is one of those stories for me that’s so much deeper than what appears on the surface. What’s on the surface you ask? Well in regards to this movie I see it as your everyday cliche horror/slasher film that we all grew up on the 80’s complete with jocks, sexy chicks and good ole Rated-R gore. However under the surface it’s so much more. In fact by the flick’s fiery ending its flipped completely over and insane as can be (in a very good way). I can go on and on about how much I adore this 2012 gem, but rest assured we’ll cover all that down below. For the time being I am just stoked that The Cabin in the Woods is getting the red carpet treatment on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray this September 5th. However, before we get into the UHD Disc’s vitals let’s chat about why this little horror story is so damn scrumptious.
We have a sorta fascination with older, aged action heroes nowadays without really knowing it. People have flocked to Liam Neeson movies and there seems to be some interest still there when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger do a movie. Its come a long way since an aged Roger Moore was vine swinging in India or hanging off a fire engine in San Francisco. Well, one series (Based on a comic book) decided to embrace all that, with the action comedy Red. Lionsgate is continue to consistently dig back into some of its catalog from this decade and make the 4K jump with them. Red and its sequel, Red 2, are next in line, coming out September 5th. As is every summer, Marvel kicks it off with its latest and greatest. 2017 saw the hotly anticipated to their surprise hit from a few years back, the (At the time) dice rolling Guardians of the Galaxy. And of course the film was a big damn hit. James Gunn has shown he really has a handle on the source material and the film universe and characters he’s crafting as well. Its fantastic news that he will be returning for a third volume of the adventures of Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax and what will be Adolescent Groot. Also fantastic new, James Gunn has willed his way and gotten his wish to have the film released on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format, making it Disney’s first. The director campaigned for it all throughout his post production and press tour, having shot the film in 8K and not wanting his blasting of colors in the film to go to waste. Sometimes comedy isn’t biting and caustic but contains subtlety, romance and dancing cops – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! Today we’re digging into the recesses of the underrated Judge Reinhold (he’s more than Beverly Hills Cop and Fast Time At Ridgemont High folks!) for a hidden gem that I actually had to rent from one of the last remaining video stores to re-watch. (YouTube, iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies and TV and Vudu – it’s virtually MIA!) It’s a sweet tale of a good-natured dude who gets in over his head when the boogie down bug bites him. Bank robberies, impersonating an officer, library roller skating and going to your left all in a big stage attempt to not be…Off Beat!
Making up for last week’s small cinema windfall, I’m pounding the movie pavement and taking on a massive eight indie flicks for full film examination for the fans. Via online screeners, sample home product and even shelling bucks out of pocket (I’m a film freak who puts his movie dissection money where his mouth is!), I’m upping the ante on lesser known features and there is something for everyone. Snowy murder mysteries, jailhouse tales, stalker stories, shark infested sagas, time travel adventures, ice cream killer yarns, odd man out fables and head in the freezer flicks all get covered ala this week’s Encapsulated Movie Reviews. Here I am with another second week of summer film with an underwhelming box office return in 2017. Snatched wasn’t the bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was, but I’m pretty sure people were it expecting it to do a lot better. Its reviews were right about there with King Arthur (though a little better). Personally, I was looking forward to this one, but didn’t get a change to see it in the theater due to…I dunno, life and stuff probably. But, now its here and on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for me to check out in the comfort of my own home theater.
