Prometheus (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

With the release of Alien: Covenant on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray, its predecessor Prometheus easily lent itself to piggy backing with it on release date. A pretty simple upgrade for the 2012 Ridley Scott film. A film at odds with its audience, I find Prometheus a film I’m always eager and happy to revisit for another look. I’d like to thank Brian for ponying this one over to me, as he was originally going to cover this one, but things fell the way they did and he offered it to me.  He did cover the original Blu-ray release of the film, so if you like his Alien: Covenant review from last week and would like to go back and check out his full thoughts on Prometheus, you can go back and read them HERE. Prometheus is available now on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray (Street date was August 15th) and you can pre-order from the link below (If its working, if not, be patient, it’ll probably come back soon). Supergirl: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

Last year, of all the Arrow-verse superhero shows, Supergirl was the highest rated in its inaugural season. But, unlike the others, it was on boring old dull CBS which pulls in the biggest network ratings. While great for the DC shows, it was poor for CBS. Plus it was an interesting show, so of course they had to pull it. Luckily, it took a little bit, but it logically found its right home on the CW where it became their second highest rated show. Unfortunately, since production moved to Canada, it had to jettison one of its strengths in Calista Flockhart. But, better to have the show with minimum contributions from her than no show at all. Supergirl’s second season comes to Blu-ray on August 22nd and you can pre-order this nice little set by clicking the Amazon link following this review. Cabin in the Woods (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Cabin in the Woods 4K ReviewThe Cabin in the Woods is one of those films that proves you should never judge any book by its cover or so to speak.  This is one of those stories for me that’s so much deeper than what appears on the surface.  What’s on the surface you ask?  Well in regards to this movie I see it as your everyday cliche horror/slasher film that we all grew up on the 80’s complete with jocks, sexy chicks and good ole Rated-R gore.  However under the surface it’s so much more.  In fact by the flick’s fiery ending its flipped completely over and insane as can be (in a very good way).  I can go on and on about how much I adore this 2012 gem, but rest assured we’ll cover all that down below.  For the time being I am just stoked that The Cabin in the Woods is getting the red carpet treatment on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray this September 5th.  However, before we get into the UHD Disc’s vitals let’s chat about why this little horror story is so damn scrumptious.

Red (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

We have a sorta fascination with older, aged action heroes nowadays without really knowing it. People have flocked to Liam Neeson movies and there seems to be some interest still there when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger do a movie. Its come a long way since an aged Roger Moore was vine swinging in India or hanging off a fire engine in San Francisco. Well, one series (Based on a comic book) decided to embrace all that, with the action comedy Red. Lionsgate is continue to consistently dig back into some of its catalog from this decade and make the 4K jump with them. Red and its sequel, Red 2, are next in line, coming out September 5th. If you’re interested in snagging a copy to have when it hits shelves, click on the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Red (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

As is every summer, Marvel kicks it off with its latest and greatest. 2017 saw the hotly anticipated to their surprise hit from a few years back, the (At the time) dice rolling Guardians of the Galaxy.  And of course the film was a big damn hit.  James Gunn has shown he really has a handle on the source material and the film universe and characters he’s crafting as well. Its fantastic news that he will be returning for a third volume of the adventures of Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax and what will be Adolescent Groot. Also fantastic new, James Gunn has willed his way and gotten his wish to have the film released on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format, making it Disney’s first. The director campaigned for it all throughout his post production and press tour, having shot the film in 8K and not wanting his blasting of colors in the film to go to waste. You’ll be able to check out Disney and Marvel’s first foray into this exciting new format on August 22nd. And might I recommend you pre-order using the Amazon link below. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES Makes An On-Time Arrival for its 30th anniversary on Blu-ray

Written and directed by the incomparable John Hughes, the celebrated comedy PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES makes an on-time arrival for its 30th anniversary on Blu-ray Combo Pack with a Digital HD copy and on DVD October 10, 2017 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.   Starring comedy greats Steve Martin and John Candy, the uproarious classic follows a businessman (Martin) who is struggling to get home for Thanksgiving, but burdened by one travel mishap after another, as well as the company of an annoying traveling salesman (Candy).  Filled with outrageously funny situations and a generous helping of warmth, the film also features appearances by Michael McKean, Edie McClurg and Kevin Bacon.

Forgotten Friday Flick – “Off Beat”

Sometimes comedy isn’t biting and caustic but contains subtlety, romance and dancing cops – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Today we’re digging into the recesses of the underrated Judge Reinhold (he’s more than Beverly Hills Cop and Fast Time At Ridgemont High folks!) for a hidden gem that I actually had to rent from one of the last remaining video stores to re-watch.  (YouTube, iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies and TV and Vudu – it’s virtually MIA!)  It’s a sweet tale of a good-natured dude who gets in over his head when the boogie down bug bites him.  Bank robberies, impersonating an officer, library roller skating and going to your left all in a big stage attempt to not be…Off Beat!

Baywatch: Extended Cut (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Baywatch 4K ReviewIf you’re of my generation, who didn’t watch television’s Baywatch growing up?  I mean of course we all watched for Knight Rider‘s David Hasselhoff and beach babes like Pamela Anderson, Nicole Eggert, Yasmine Bleech and Carmen Electra were just icing on the cake.  Sure (wink, wink).  Baywatch is not only part of our pop culture, but like The Terminator 1 and 2 to most people, part of our beloved childhood too.  So when word of a reboot surfaced regarding turning the nostalgic show into a motion picture I feared the absolute worst.  Yes I feared my childhood would be butchered and erased just like 2015’s Terminator: Genisys did to it.  Ugh!  However, rest assured there was a silver lining in all of this.  Baywatch would unite onscreen two of the hottest comedic stars with some pretty rad beach babes too.  Of course I’m talking about involvement from the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron to the big busted Alexandra Daddario.  What?  LOL.  I don’t know how else to describe her besides those bright, Blu-ray eyes she has.  So I was saying yeah Baywatch….

Hopscotch – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

Hopscotch was a great film to catch up with. It’s a spy movie where action and thrills are hardly the point. While The Criterion Collection has a huge selection of films spanning decades of cinema and coming from all over the world, some may characterize the selections as stuffy dramas. That’s hardly the case and what better way to see that than by taking on a globetrotting spy comedy starring Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. Hopscotch was an early entry into The Criterion Collection (it arrived on DVD in 2002), but it has now been given a Blu-ray update resulting in an excellent way to see and hear this forgotten cold war comedy gem.

Worth Watching by Tyler Smith (Book Review)

It’s an interesting position to be put in when it comes to writing a review of a book that is full of movies reviews and essays. The idea would be to examine the writing and determine whether or not it has enough of a voice found within the words to appreciate and champion as an excellent example of cinematic criticism and critiques. Of course, there is also the matter of how this book is structured. Why these specific reviews? Is there an overarching purpose to combining a select number of online posts and written essays into a trade paperback? Based on what I found in Tyler Smith’s “Worth Watching,” it became apparent that Smith has not only figured out a way to combine a number of his strongest pieces of writing into a handy book but uncovered a method for getting across why he explores his thoughts on cinema as more than just a hobby.

Chemistry Helps The Forgettable And Bombastic ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ (Movie Review)

There’s a silly, little movie I admire called Money Talks. It’s the pre-Rush Hour action-comedy starring Chris Tucker and directed by Brett Ratner that hit theaters in August 1997. I’ve seen it many times because it plays on TBS a lot and it’s easy to have on in the background. I mention this because The Hitman’s Bodyguard feels like a film destined to play in a similar manner. It’s an action-comedy solely relying on the strength of the star chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson that likely would need much attention to be paid to it by a viewer casually watching it from their home. I guess that also speaks to whether or not the big screen is the place for it.

Alien: Covenant (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Alien: Covenant (4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review)Six years ago I fell in love with the Alien franchise when I was forced to tackle the Alien Anthology Blu-ray box set in my complete review of it all here.  I had never seen the third or fourth flicks before then.  Two years later I became of a bonafide disciple of Ridley Scott’s franchise with the release of Prometheus (as reviewed here).  No dispute here that the original four Alien films are legendary.  You’d be hard pressed to find anybody trash talking those, but Prometheus well that’s a whole different ball of wax.  If you want to talk about a completely divided movie, look no further than 2012’s Prometheus.  Holy hell either people loved it or long time Alien fans completely loathed it.  There was no middle ground whatsoever.  Like it or not it made enough money for Fox to green light a sequel.  That’s the reason we are all here today too, but is Alien: Covenant really a sequel to Prometheus or is something all completely different?  That’s what I was most interested in learning going into last week’s press screening.

The Philadelphia Story, Le Samouraï & More Coming to The Criterion Collection in November 2017

This November, golden-age Hollywood’s wittiest romantic comedy will join the Criterion Collection: The Philadelphia Story, starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart, all at the height of their dazzling charms. Our edition will feature a new 4K restoration, along with new supplements exploring the film’s production, which launched Hepburn back to stardom thanks largely to her own shrewd orchestrations. Next up, Donna Deitch’s swooning love story Desert Hearts – a landmark in queer cinema and a triumph of independent filmmaking – will appear in a special edition featuring a new, restored 4K digital transfer and interviews in which the cast and crew revisit the film’s production and discuss its impact three decades later. Terry Gilliam stepped out from the ranks of Monty Python for his solo-directing debut, Jabberwocky, which stars Michael Palin as a clueless bumpkin traipsing through a medieval kingdom terrorized by a fearsome dragon. Our edition marks the film’s first appearance on Blu-ray, in a new 4K restoration with special features including new interviews with the cast and crew. And that’s not all: Jean-Pierre Melville’s ice-cold gangster classic Le samouraï, starring Alain Delon, will now be on Blu-ray in a new high-definition digital restoration.

Get lit, win big. Then go home to the kids when “The House” arrives onto Blu-ray Combo Pack on October 10. The comedy stars Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler in their first big-screen pairing. Andrew Jay Cohen makes his feature film directorial debut with “The House.” When Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets into the college of her dreams it’s cause for celebration. That is, until Scott and Kate (Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler) learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford. With the help of their friend and neighbor Frank (Jason Mantzoukas)—also in need of a major payday—they decide to open an illegal casino in his suburban house, risking everything together on a Vegas-style bacchanal where money flows, inhibitions are checked at the door, and all bets are off.

Snatched (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Here I am with another second week of summer film with an underwhelming box office return in 2017. Snatched wasn’t the bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was, but I’m pretty sure people were it expecting it to do a lot better. Its reviews were right about there with King Arthur (though a little better). Personally, I was looking forward to this one, but didn’t get a change to see it in the theater due to…I dunno, life and stuff probably. But, now its here and on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for me to check out in the comfort of my own home theater.  You can pick this one up now (Sorry for the late review, it didn’t show up til after it’d be released) as it streeted back on August 8th. And if you don’t have the film, pre-order using the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Snatched (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’
