Forgotten Friday Flick – “The Bonfire Of The Vanities”

Forgotten Friday FlickThis week in our continued Friday dissection of past De Palma ditties I’m heading down a controversial road with a film that even the man himself has distanced himself from – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Destined to be one of the most discussed and disagreed with selections to date (it was after all nominated for five prestigious Razzie Awards!), my choice this week is a film I (and my movie loving father!) consider to be one of the most notable in the areas of black comedy.  Though short on signature style, there’s a distinctively devious and delicious over-the-top humor that cannot be ignored.  And for those who claim “it’s not like the book” remember this is a movie – a movie called…The Bonfire of the Vanities.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season (Blu-ray Review)

BD64066orn-walking-dead-s6-3dAnchor Bay Entertainment is proud to present another season of The Walking Dead on Blu-ray. The hit zombie-drama series has been previously reviewed by Why So Blu’s Brian White (seasons 123, 4 and 5), but he has handed the duty over to me this time around. Fortunately for me, season six offered plenty of big shakeups for the series, complete with big twists, cliffhangers, controversy and at least one of the series’ best episodes. Now you can dig in to see just how well this Blu-ray set stacks up.

KISS Rocks Vegas (Blu-ray Review)

KISS Rocks Vegas Blu-ray ReviewOh yeah!  You can almost hear the fire-breathing front man, Gene “The Demon” Simmons, scream watch this once-in-a-lifetime event on the Blu-ray format.  And who am I to argue with his wisdom?  I’m a nobody in regards to Mr. Simmons, but one thing you can’t question is my undying discipleship to the legendary, finally in the Rock Hall of Fame, rock band KISS.  They have been like a religion in my life and my coverage of certain KISS related events here, here and here are a testament to my love and affinity to the four guys despite all the lineup shakeups over the year making them a resilient and indestructible force of nature).  And the following Blu-ray review here is no exception to the matter.  However, I am sad I missed out on all of this in 2014.  I was really hoping that KISS would of brought their residency back to The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, but wish in one hand and you know what in the other.  Even though I missed it all, I have to look on the bright side of things.  I have one hell of a rock and roll souvenir now with Eagle Rock Entertainment’s KISS Rocks Vegas on Blu-ray. ‘Hell Or High Water’ Serves Cinematic Justice (Movie Review)

hell-or-high-water-posterThe neo-western has been an interesting genre to keep an eye on. Many of these films take the staples of classic westerns, but are heavily informed by so much that has come before. Brilliant films such as No Country For Old Men or (a personal favorite) The Way of the Gun even get away with cleverly-staged gunplay, but these scenes come at a cost not forgotten. Hell or High Water is one such film. It plays up its contemporary setting and sets us up with well-rounded characters more interested in dialogue dynamics than shootouts. The film is also an effective heist drama with tangible stakes.

Lord Of ‘War Dogs’ (Movie Review)

war dogs thumbDirector Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School) has been angling for a film like War Dogs the same way Oscar winner Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) angled for The Big Short. Both have not been above making goofy bro comedies, but they obviously have other ideas. McKay was met with plenty of acclaim for tackling the financial crisis, which was an undercurrent in his film The Other Guys. Phillips has shown a liking for much darker comedy/drama and getting great cinematography in films you wouldn’t necessarily expect that from. This story of two young guys that became successful arms dealers fulfills those needs.

Raiders!: The Story Of The Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (Blu-ray Review)

Raiders SquareFrom Drafthouse Films and MVD Entertainment comes the release of Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on August 16th.  After Steven Spielberg’s classic Raiders of the Lost Ark was released 35 years ago, three 11-year-old boys from Mississippi set out on what would become a 7-year-long labor of love and tribute to their favorite film: a faithful, shot-for-shot adaptation of the action adventure film.  They finished every scene…except one; the film’s explosive airplane set piece.  Over two decades later, the trio reunited with the original cast members from their childhood in order to complete their masterpiece in what IGN has dubbed “the Boyhood of fan movies.”  Featuring interviews with John Rhys-Davies, Eli Roth and more, Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is a critically acclaimed documentary from filmmakers Tim Skousen & Jeremy Coon.  Special features include more than four hours of bonus content such as dual audio commentary tracks (with Skousen & Coon, as well as film subjects Chris Strompolos & Eric Zala), deleted scenes from the documentary, outtakes from the Adaptation, Q&A footage from the Adaptation’s 2003 premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX, a photo booklet featuring storyboard art from the Adaptation and a free HD digital copy of the film.

Experience The Craft And Adventure In ‘Kubo And The Two Strings’ (Movie Review)

kubo and the two strings bannerLaika is currently the studio I have the utmost respect for. Just knowing this stop-animation studio has more films coming down the line to be distributed by Focus Features makes their next project one of my most anticipated films of that year. There latest film, Kubo and the Two Strings, is another amazing accomplishment. It combines breathtakingly beautiful (and ridiculously complicated) animation with a well-thought out adventure tale. True to form, Laika has also layered the story with some complex themes and elements that make the film rewarding for younger and older audiences.
