The release of the graphic novel Who Killed Kurt Cobain was recently announced at the Emerald City Comicon. This book, written by Nicolas Otero, will be published by IDW, and where better to make such an announcement than Seattle, Cobain’s old stomping grounds. The book, slated for release this October, is told from the perspective of Boddah, Cobain’s child hood imaginary friend (real in the sense that Cobain truly did reference this character throughout his life). While it’s clearly a fictional work, it’s also largely based on true events. Upon initially hearing this news I was immediately and enthusiastically excited about it, because this is Kurt Cobain we’re talking about. To this day, well after his death, he’s still a rock god, a timeless, revered legend. Then, after a little bit of time and consideration, I started to get nervous.

Before Venom, Anaconda, Python, or Snakes on a Plane, there was the seminal snake-centric horror film Sssssss. The story of a mad scientist hell bent on turning humans into snakes and using these hybrids to get revenge on those who have wronged him, Sssssss is every ophidiophobe’s nightmare. This thriller, directed by Bernard L. Kowalski (Attack of the Giant Leeches) features Strother Martin (Cool Hand Luke) and Dirk Benedict (Battlestar Galactica) and also stars Heather Menzies (Piranha) and Reb Brown (Howling II and TV’s Captain America). Making its Blu-ray debut April 26th, 2016 from Scream Factory, Sssssss comes loaded with bonus features, including a new interview with actor Dirk Benedict, a new interview with actor Heather Menzies-Urich, a photo gallery, theatrical trailers and more! Fans can pre-order their copies now by visiting ShoutFactory.com. Continue reading ‘Sssssss (Blu-ray Review)’

Mojave is described as a taut thriller revolving around a suicidal artist and a homicidal drifter. It comes from writer/director William Monahan (The Departed), who has essentially made the inverse of Seven Psychopaths by writer/director Martin McDonagh. Where that film was clever, self-reflexive and wildly entertaining, Mojave is pompous and dour. Of course, it does feature an off-kilter performance from Oscar Isaac, among other things, so it is time to see how the Blu-ray stacks up.

This year After the Reality opened the 17th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival. Since Jewtopia served as the opening night feature a few years back, I have been doing my best to manage my excitement level for these premieres, but the film was certainly no dud. While a bit familiar, the comedy-drama took on some subject matter in an interestingly enough way to hold onto my attention and make good use of its key performers.

Well that was better than expected. Not that marketing should be a factor in a review, but the trailer for A Hologram for the King presented a random comedy-drama starring Tom Hanks, arriving outside of awards season with little to suggest something worthwhile. Sure, the film tells a seemingly trite story of a white man traveling to an exotic location and reevaluating his life, but it does it pretty well.

The worst fears have been realized, as The Huntsman: Winter’s War is The Return of Jafar of big studio fairy tale movies. Armed with a $115 million budget, this attempt at a spin-off/prequel/sequel fails miserably in its attempt to have any more worth than a direct-to-video sequel that no one expects much from. It would be one thing to announce this film as some kind of soon-to-be camp classic, but the dreariness keeps things far more in check than one would like. The result is a dire and unnecessary film that offers next to nothing.

He has won his Oscar for The Revenant, a film that was incredibly challenging to make and was also awarded Oscars for its terrific cinematography and the directing efforts of Alejandro G. Inarrittu. Now the film has arrived on Blu-ray, with plenty to take in, as far as the visual accomplishments of this film are concerned. See what you are in for, aside from a giant bear attack in this Blu-ray package.
