Welcome to my new weekly column featuring my pull-list (the comics to which I subscribe and have set aside for me at my local comic shop, for the uninitiated) and recommendations, titles that might not float my proverbial boat, but might be interesting to some of our readers. Every Wednesday a load of new comics is delivered to your local comic shop (or Comixology, if you prefer reading digitally). This Wednesday is no different, except that there is a lot of great content being released this week. As such, I’ll be skipping the recommendations and going straight for the juiciest morsels. Let’s get to it! Continue reading ‘Weekly Comic Book Recommendations – 4/6/16 (Comics)’

At its very best, Hardcore Henry has a lot in common with 2006’s Crank, starring Jason Statham. Both films have the sort of logic you would find in a video game and rarely take their foot off the gas to deliver anything all that deep. The difference is getting a personality you enjoy from Statham, while Hardcore Henry plays as a first person shooter, where the hero has no discernible personality. It makes for a decent one-time watch in terms of visual ambition, but the action we see hardly qualifies the film for higher acclaim.

Writer/director Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Lifeforce) puts an uproarious spin on the zombie apocalypse movie in 1985’s cult classicTHE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, starring Clu Gulager (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), James Karen (Mulholland Drive) and Don Calfa (Weekend at Bernie’s). Considered one of the campiest undead romps of its time, the film helped launch the career of scream queen Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama) and features a killer soundtrack with tracks from many songs from punk artists such as The Cramps, T.S.O.L. SSQ and 45 Grave. On July 19, 2016, SCREAM FACTORY™ is proud to present THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set, which includes a brand new 2K scan of the film and over 12 hours of extras! Well, its not the Deep Space Nine Blu-ray announcement I’m sure everyone would have preferred. Instead we get a repackaging of what I’m sure we already have. Still, exciting to grab the whole thing in one fell swoop for a thoughtful and kind price. The announcement also mentions the new “shelf friendly packaging”…which is confusing because the previous releases fit on the shelf ideally and perfectly. So, I’m interested to see what this is all about. We’ll see! Anyway, a little more info on the release, coming June 7th, can be found below. No pre-order available yet. After a season that garnered some mixed reaction from fans (Archer: Vice), the animated comedy-spy series is back to all their regular antics. Six seasons in, Archer remains as irreverent as ever, with all kinds of cleverness to go along with the adult-oriented nature of this series. Now, with the seventh season fast approaching, it is time to look at this DVD release, containing every season six episode and more.

I sometimes wonder how difficult it is to make something look easy. Writer/director Richard Linklater has largely specialized in putting together films that depict people acting natural enough, talking (sometimes philosophically) and occasionally involving themselves in some kind of activity. From his simpler efforts like Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight to his acclaimed epic, Boyhood, this filmmaker style has been permeating throughout his career. It applies once again to Everybody Wants Some!!, an incredibly enjoyable hangout movie, with some wonderful depth hidden just beneath the surface.

Good news! There is a very good chance Ratchet & Clank could turn out to be the very best video game adaptation ever. It’s not a high bar to clear, but there does seem to be a lot here that shows a fun movie that easily captures the spirit of the game. A lot of that comes from having the original writers and voice actors all involved, along with a great supporting cast of big stars. Whatever the case may be, the film looks fun and you can check out a few clips and some photos from the WonderCon panel that took place this past weekend. Enjoy!
