I can only assume teenagers will be the only demographic that enjoys Spaceship. Okay — please permit me to narrow that down. It will appeal to the emo subset. They’ll watch it with wonder, repeating favorite lines for about five years. And you know what? Good for them. I couldn’t be happier. For everyone else, though, good luck trying to stay awake.

At its very best, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice depicts sequences ripped straight out of an Alex Ross comic book. When at its worst, this is a cold, muscled-up film that has the feel of something written by Frank Miller, minus the irony. There is far too much on display for me to call one of the biggest superhero movie match-ups of all time bad or not worth your time, but the direction this film takes does see some of the biggest fears being realized. The story and characters fall flat in a gorgeously filmed world that, while mostly exciting, often misplaces the fun.

In the days leading up to
Batman Vs. Superman, some of us here at whysoblu wanted to discuss our favorite Batman and Superman comics to recognize and appreciate the storied history of these characters. So without further ado…
It’s probably one of the best comic books ever written and quite possibly the perfect batman story. Pretty much every other story that features the Batman doesn’t have a definitive ending. They usually wrap up with him saving the day and continuing as the savior of Gotham. With THIS story, without spoiling anything, it comes to a very satisfying conclusion that I challenge ANY bat-fan to turn their nose up at it! The Dark Knight Returns, which was written by Frank Miller, came out before Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film so this was the first time anyone had ever seen a darker take on the character. Before this most folks had an image of a smiling Batman in a blue and black outfit. Frank Miller showed us just how damaged and deranged someone would become after witnessing their parents death and devoting their entire lives to righting the wrongs of the world around him.

All Star Superman was such a breath of fresh air for me. I honestly though that I genuinely didn’t care about Superman anymore. Don’t get me wrong, when Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster introduced this iconic hero, it forever changed the world of comic books, and it did so for the better. For that, I will be forever grateful, but as new comics and new characters emerged, the golden boy of comics faded into the background, and I was okay with that. After all, one of the most difficult characters to write has to be one with near omnipotent powers. Here’s a guy who shrugs off bullets, can fly around the planet, and blast laser beams out of his eyes. While it may be fun to see somebody who can do everything, the immediate issue is why bother writing it? If he can beat any foe, if he’s powerful enough to overcome any obstacle, what drama is left? This is why I love All Star Superman, because it goes back to the roots, and found a new way to tell a FANTASTIC story. Continue reading ‘Countdown to Batman Vs. Superman: All Star Superman (Comic Review)’

Whether or not you agree with what he has to say, Michael Moore has proven himself to be an entertaining filmmaker. Some of his films lean heavily on one side of things, but with Sicko and what I’m hearing about Where to Invade Next, it is nice to say Moore has a different touch working to explore some very interesting topics in humorous fashion. Everyone will have a chance to learn more about his latest effort, which arrives on Blu-ray on April 29th. And now this: “Just when we need him most, America’s favorite political provocateur, Michael Moore, brings us his latest award-winning film, Where to Invade Next. Honored by festivals and critics groups alike, Where to Invade Next is an expansive, hilarious, and subversive comedy/documentary in which the Academy Award®-winning director confronts the most pressing issues facing America today and finds solutions in the most unlikely places.” Find out more!

One of two documentaries about mass shootings premiering at SXSW, TOWER pieces together stories from a few survivors and witnesses of the UT Tower shooting that took place in Austin in August of 1966. The film uses roto-scoped animation (think films like Waking Life, or A Scanner Darkly) on top of archive footage, to create a unique storytelling mechanism, which allows for playful recreation of the events without diminishing any impact. TOWER takes its time with the events of that day and provides an avenue for the viewer to empathize with each person’s story as the terrifying and unsettling nature of the shooting and the eventual aftermath become clear. Boxes of tissues should have been handed out to people entering this screening, particularly after we were told that some of the survivors were in attendance. Continue reading ‘SXSW Review: TOWER’

A Death in the Family, written by Jim Starlin (Infinity Gauntlet), and illustrated by Jim Aparo (House of Mystery) was my first trade paperback, so needless to say I read it like a thousand times. Sometimes I would re-read certain pages, or even panels, because they were so powerful, and I just wanted to experience them again and again. The trade paperback format would come to be a major factor in the comic industry, but these single issue originally came out in 1988 and 1989, and at that time there weren’t nearly as many trades available. To have one was to have a real treat, and I made sure to capitalize on that. I’m not exaggerating when I say this book was on my bedside table for probably two years. So what (besides having it collected) was so good about it? A great many things.

As we are coming closer and closer to the release of Batman v Superman, it is always important to pay homage to where these two caped heroes came from. No, I’m not talking about Krypton and Gotham, but the comic book pages from which they were spawned. Before they were in on screen in a $250 million film, they were in 25-cent comics (or $3.99 today) duking it out with armed thugs determined to thwart the justice and the American way. The next few days a few of us writers here at Why So Blu are taking a look at some of our favorite titles from either character.

There’s something pretty cool about seeing an indie director with a knack for human drama take on a genre film. Okay, so that applies to almost any newbie director handed the keys to a franchise, but how about one who has developed the story himself and is allowed by a studio to make such a movie completely in his own voice? Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud) has accomplished such a task with Midnight Special, a fantastic sci-fi chase movie that is undeniably a film he developed and put to screen.

Reign of the Supermen holds a special place in my heart. I know this might be kind of a cheat, picking a cross title story arc as one of my favorite Superman stories, but it was a collaborative, cohesive event. Also, it’s technically not about Kal-el, but is undoubtedly a Superman story. It’s interesting, I’ve actually found that many of my favorite Superman stories don’t center around the man himself, but more on that later. Enough with the disclaimers, let’s get to why this series made the list.

I really can’t see how anyone could possibly listen to this album and NOT be compelled to take on the world! It really doesn’t hold back on the positivity which makes it the best kind of music to wake up to on a Monday morning. I’m sure there are some people who might find songs with such an up beat message to be pretty corny and unrelatable, considering all the ill’s of the world. But that’s just when we need this kind of music the MOST! It’s times like these when we need to be shaken out of our “doom and gloom” mind set and reminded that there are still things in this world worth believing in!
