More than three years ago, 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanished – 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: zero. This is the setting for a tale of two families: the Garveys, who have moved to this special place, and whose lives were forever changed by the Departure, and the Murphys, a local family that seems to have been spared from an event that shook the rest of the world. But even in the town of Miracle, you can’t escape your past. This “immersive, deeply satisfying drama” (Jen Chaney, Esquire) delivers profound mystery, heart-pounding action, stocking controversy and startling beauty in all 10 gripping Season Two episodes. I’m sure it’s part of my nature, but I think was one of the most pessimistic people going into the Deadpool screening this past Thursday evening. It’s not because I feared that every funny, ludicrous moment was probably played out in the trailers, but instead overtime I think of Deadpool I think of that terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine outing. Now I dot know about you, but that first solo Wolverine film always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, since this particular Deadpool film has been blessed with a glorious R-rating and some sweet marketing to boot. I’m all about second chances and forgiveness in 2016. So what the hell?! The over-the-top stunts and chaotic action pieces in the trailers kind of left me reminiscent of one of my favorite films from the mid-2000s, Crank. I realize that may be a giant stretch, but dammit…this is my Deadpool movie review, not yours! Continue reading ‘Deadpool: Chimichangas For Everyone! (Movie Review)’

The tandem of Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics have churned out one animated feature after another. We have seen a number of titles featuring some of DC’s most popular characters such as the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman features. There have even been a few featuring the Justice League in one capacity or another. I’m not sure of sales figures, but these things have to be successful or else they wouldn’t keep putting such strong efforts toward them. With their latest release, we look at Batman: Bad Blood, a new suspenseful 72-minute adventure and one that’s not meant for the kiddies.

While they are among the most acclaimed modern filmmakers of today, one of the criticisms leveled at Joel and Ethan Coen is how mean they are to their characters. There may be truth in that, but Hail, Caesar! certainly says a lot about their love for the movies. Set in the 1950s, the Golden Age of Hollywood, this film is a mystery-comedy where the mystery hardly matters and a group of loosely-connected characters serve as a tribute to what makes the movies so grand.

Cry Havoc has arrived, written by Simon Spurrier (Six Gun Gorilla, Marvel Zombies), and illustrated by Ryan Kelly (Local, Star Wars), this much anticipated issue one does not disappoint. Image comics has a reputation for putting out fantastic creator owned titles. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have series like the Walking Dead or Saga, among many others, so it stands to reason that when they strongly advertise a new series, it behooves a comic junkie to expect great things. Such was the case with Cry Havoc, which puts a literal twist on Shakespeare’s quote “Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.”. Image knew they had promising material, and have been wisely hyping comic readers for some time. Now it’s here, and hot damn, did they hit the mark yet again.

This true story takes place during the late 80’s in Yonkers, New York. The newly elected 28 year old Mayor
Nick Wasicsko has a major housing crisis to deal with. The courts have ruled that the city of Yonkers must build new low income housing witch would integrate and diversify traditionally white neighborhoods. Needless to say, this doesn’t go over so well. Even though it’s 1987 there are still plenty of people who believe that keeping to your own race is the best way to maintain peace and civility. There are also those who say that it’s not a matter of race, but economics. That the value of their homes will be brought down if low income housing comes in. Now granted, that is a valid argument. But the problem is, and they do touch on this, is that people of color have been systematically segregated into neighborhoods away from white people.
